Could be the other heavy armor class. The sentence is a little vague. I don't think it's confirmation, definitely not by ArenaNet but we'll soon see since the reveal is supposed to be this month (and they are running out of time!). It could also be that they are just using Guardian as a general term to describe "the tank" in the "iconic adventuring group". If this is the other heavy armor class I will be a little disappointed if it's just a heavier tank, making the warrior's ability to carry a shield virtually pointless. I was hoping the other heavy armor class would wield spears or javelins like the Paragon, and/or combine magic to buff himself rather than relying solely on physical damage and physical protection. Then again, who knows! I guess we'll have to see. Just based on the picture it looks like either a heavy tanking class or a paladin type class (which would be okay too).

Err never mind, I read it more closely, I guess it is the next class. Can't wait to see what it's all about.

@kjhasdfjkhk From what I could gather in the books, this "Guardian" seems to rely on magical abilities to tank. I hate to make the comparison, but the relationship is looking a lot like WoW's Warrior and Paladin tanks. Of course, ANet is scrapping "tanking" for "control" so I can't wait to see what really sets them apart.

No tanks in GW2 brother. Check out hunters insights page about this class. A lot is revealed about it in the newest book kind of like they did for the necro in the first book.

@77Prophet77

Of course there are tanks in this game. The game doesn't follow the traditional holy trinity but there are still defensive classes/builds with the ability to generate threat.

Omg yes there is. It's not the same mechanic as in most MMOs but there obviously is one. What would be the point of having heavy armor and shields in the game if the elementalist is just going to tank every instance? They have said that tanking will be similar to Guild Wars 1, where mobs will attack the closest target with the heaviest armor and will tend to ignore the rest of the party if the tank does enough damage/CC to keep it interested. There is no way they will make the game based completely on damage aggro, or else every mob and boss would automatically run to the elementalist and kill them in 2 seconds while the warrior is running around trying to hit him with his defensive mace for 10 damage for no reason. It would make all of those things completely pointless to use. They are also going to have class utility skills that force the enemy to attack that target for X seconds.

Sure, there is no "dedicated healer or tank" in the game but that doesn't mean some classes are better at it than others. They've already said that classes such as a water attuned elementalist will focus heavily on healing, why is it so hard to accept that there will be classes like the warrior or guardian that are better at tanking (especially since they already said there would be, they just haven't shown off the system yet).

'ability to generate threat' is very different from 'ability to interdict and soak damage'. threat is a pretty specific mechanic. and i believe they specifically said there won't be taunts.

And if you actually read what I said, I never said they would be generating threat. I said they are going to have a threat mechanic built into the game, which will be more based on the enemy AI deciding who to attack rather than a ton of abilities that generate threat specifically for the warrior or whatever class.

All I said was that there would be tanks, which there will be. ArenaNet made mention that there would be no dedicated tank class and no dedicated healing class, which people blew completely out of proportion thinking that it meant there would be NO tanks and NO healers in the game. They have since issued a clarification that they are NOT removing tanks and healers from the game, they simply meant that there would be no ONE class who is the healer (like the monk in Guild Wars 1) and no ONE tank, but rather giving multiple classes the option to gear/spec their character to be a healer, tank or DPS. For example, the elementalist can be all 3. In Fire attunement they are high DPS, in water attunement they are healers and in Earth attunement they can be tanks.

I was merely trying to say that it wont be complete chaos with monsters running back and forth all over the place attacking whatever is doing the most damage to them. There will be a built in threat mechanic ensuring that monsters will attack certain people over others. When I said tank I meant the ability to wear heavy armor and a shield, and use defensive attacks like a warrior with a mace and absorb lots of damage, as opposed to using actual skills to generate X amount of threat. Like I said, if the tank goes in first and gets the mobs attention, then does an adequate enough job hitting it and stunning it, etc, he should be able to keep the aggro the entire fight even if other players are doing more damage.

nope, you're still not getting it. fights in GW world are precisely chaotic. multiple enemies fighting together as a team. if their team includes ranged that feel like targetting your clothies in the back, clothies take damage. if the boss has a ranged ability and decides that water ele spamming group heal abilities is a more important target than the low-dmg, heavily armored warrior in the front, it will switch to its ranged attack and begin showering the ele with love, or it will summon adds to do the job for it. there will be no ability, or spec, or profession that is able to keep the attention of mobs that choose to not care about them as a target.
you are correct in that there will be specs and professions that are better able to withstand damage. but nothing in GW2 will guarantee that that character will be able to keep the attention of AI damage dealers.

I think this could mean 100% chance for the mesmer coming over as well. Logan's profession is never outright said in the book, but he's cited in the article. Jennah, on the other hand, is called a mesmer multiple times and being the queen, will most definitely play a huge role in GW2.

From other source material this was intended as a teaser to the profession revealed and early in the month Anet did say they were close to revealing another profession soon.
