Damn. Hope the items needed for the upper tier abilities will have other ways to be acquired for those of us who *can't* participate in Strike/Task Forces...

@Tempes Magus I played this game for 5 years and I can honestly say I encountered this problem less than 10 times. And it's not because I didn't play with large groups, either.

You guys want some cheese with your whine? Geez, the devs give us new stuff to do, new goals to achieve, and all you do is complain.

I just finsihed the trial and

1.) Fantastic community
2.) Nice devs unlike their old studio. They read as if they respect the customer.
3.) Very fun game.

Tempes, I do not have a super computer (actually played 4 years ago on an even suckier rig than now) and just have standard cable internet, and have no issues with this sort of thing, even in huge groups / invasions / etc.

Any chance this could be an issue on your end?

My computer and video card are not high end, and neither is my broadband connection. Yet CoH runs smoothly for me. Sounds to me like your comp and connection just suck. Even if CoH is partly to blame, a lot of it seems to be on your end. You can't expect Paragon Studios to compensate for that.

Out of curiosity, and at the risk of sidelining the comments into general performance issues, have you tried out Rift and are you having performance issues there?

I mention that as it's a new-generation game, yet they appear to have paid some attention to performance on lower-end rigs. If your comp runs smoothly there, then yeah, CoH might have accrued some performance problems as they upgraded to higher-def graphics.

(That said, I suspect CoH is still sporting a notorious memory leak that sneaks in most Issue updates which causes a client crash if the player is logged on for long enough to use up all the memory. I have 3 gb of RAM, I tend to crash out at inopportune times during TFs - a friend with less RAM tends to crash more frequently. Said friend with less bandwidth has also encountered some bad ping/lag issues now and then while my cable connection stays rock solid until my memory fills up.)

If you're having performance issues with all new gen MMOs, period, then it might be time to re-evaluate whether 128 kb/sec is sufficient. You may be moving out of the lower-performance subset that MMO devs still cater for, and dropping into a percentile that doesn't have too big an effect on their profit margin.

I feel for ya, I do. In my geographic region, if a connecting router goes down, my latency can shoot up to unplayable scores of 800+ ms and all I can do is log off, make grumpy phone calls to my ISP and wait for the connection to magically fix itself. Bandwidth and connectivity are crucial in enjoying MMOs (or FPSes). But increasing your bandwidth is probably a bit easier than me moving geographically closer to an East or West Coast server. :)

I have a 5 year old PC atm - going to upgrade once I know the specs of GW2/SWTOR and games like Brink and Battlefield 3 - but playing Rift on minimum settings I got 19fps (only 2fps on average settings) and playing CoH I'm lucky to get past 5-10fps on minimum or average settings, but I also get massive hitching in Praetorian zones and in Grandville and often in other zones too - now ok I only have a dual core PC with a 7800gtx 256Mb card gfx card and 4Gb RAM but for a 5 year old game thats hould be enough - before ultra-mode I was getting 20fps everywhere, but now after ultra-mode I get hitching and stuttering everywhere despite not using ultra-mode at all. It's not good enough, really. Sure, I have an old PC but it's an old game and they haven't raised minimum/recommended specs - and I have friends with newer PCs who get terrible framerates too.

Yeah my comp is fine with CoH so really...

Anyway, it looks like CoH isn't adding much at all that is new. Just tempting people with bonuses and higher rewards. These devs are so out of touch. Honestly, the content gets old and fast when you've been around the game for a while. It's too bad the devs don't see this.

@Superfan Remember that this is not a full issue release. It's a "pack." A mini-release.

Honestly, people are way too quick to claim a game's devs are "out of touch" when they don't find the game's latest update up to their personal standards. There's a ton of people who liked this announcement just fine. The devs are clearly not out of touch with the majority of their players.

Seriously, could you please put a link to the source when you refer to these things? I clicked on all the hyperlinks and went everywhere but Black Scorpion's announcement...

For the benefit of others, it's over here:

That's kinda disappointing if there's no new strike force, imo. It's interesting tech, sure. But it's just introducing the equivalent of dailies or Zaishen missions into CoH, except with TFs.

And dailies, while effective in herding a spread out pool of players into focused behavior chasing shiny carrots, end up incentivizing shiny carrots. This will ultimately be a bad thing in the long term.

External motivations KILL internal drive. Dailies make exciting I-want-do-them-cos-they're-fun things into I-have-to-do-them-in-order-to-get-shiny chores. Soon, players will not do any task force except the weekly highlight because the rewards are now 'halved' by comparison. Same thing happened with lowered debt in missions. People stopped street sweeping because a double debt penalty was perceived.

@Stormwalker

I am not just commenting about this release. It has been the last several. I quit the game in Dec and not sure I am coming back. They put out the same old crap over and over in a SLIGHTLY different wrapper. Yup, different wrapper but the contents are the same.

Hoping for a solo option since I don't like to team much. And I don't avoid teams due to performance, I just like to solo. Yeah, I'm one of THOSE. ;)

But I do have to agree, CoH's engine isn't exactly Unreal when it comes to performance. The game performs more poorly than you would expect on any given system given the graphics thanks to the "home brew" engine. The game would definitely benefit from a performance overhaul.
