EVE Online's new character creator went live yesterday in a mammoth 1.2 Gb patch. While some players (myself included) are still waiting for the patch to finish downloading, it's already clear that the new characters are a big hit with the EVE community. Immediately following the Incursion expansion's final release yesterday, the forums exploded with topics full of people trying out the new avatar customisation process -- with hilarious results. Players have even begun faithfully re-creating real-world celebrities, from Freddie Mercury and the Village People to the cast of Star Trek. On the other side of the fence, some visually impressive, realistic and even emotive avatars have been produced.
Before the new character creator went live, people had some reservations about it. While the new characters were expected to look very realistic, some players prefer to pull funny faces and create hilarious avatars that better suit their clownish approach to the game. Other players expressed concerns that there might not be enough variety, and that all the members of one bloodline would look almost identical. While the choice of clothing is likely to remain limited until Incarna, it seems that all other fears have been squarely put to rest as players continue to make some fantastic and often hilarious avatars.

"how does this damn camera even work, how am I supposed to know that it's on?"
That is the single funniest line on the forums since the original "Dude, your face"

We can't see embedded images without logging in? Unfortunate.

@gildhur Where is it that you need to log in to see images? I'm not getting that issue.

@Brendan Drain
I'm getting the same thing on the Eve forums. I can't see any of the images at all.

@Scotland Tom GaaaaH is right, anything embedded you won't be able to see. But then there's a forum rule against embedding images in the first place, they should be posted as links. Most of the ones people are talking about though are the avatars on the left hand side of people's posts, and you can click on those to see bigger versions. There are some real crackers in there!

They really aren't that good. A lot of the fantastic avatars are such due to camera angles and composition rather than any decent design. A common problem is with Freddie there: smiles are hard as hell to make look good. The eyes are also tricky, for some reason you can't swivel them to look at the camera depending on the angle of the head.
Also, all the avs look generic, because they removed a lot of the science fictiony stuff from the old avatars. There are no facial tattoos or implants, and the clothing so far is variations of robes or jackets. People have commented also about the inability to make black characters outside of minmatar brutor tribe, as well as other issues.
I liked the old creator a lot, it felt science fiction like and was more versatile in terms of head positioning.

Omg, this thread had me cracking up! Im LOVING all the new pictures!
It reallllly makes me mad I already made mine for EVE yesterday and didnt do something more creative.
I also fell prey to the "I didnt know I couldnt switch pictures of the 4 I took" crowed and hope to god CCP makes us able to change our poses whenever we feel like it.

@Beltyra It is definitely planned to let us re-take pictures whenever we like, once CCP adds more customisation features. It'll definitely be that way once Incarna hits. CCP's also going to let us re-edit our characters again once soon because of all the confusion with the editor. That's aimed to be this weekend.

It will most likely be after the Incursion 1.1.1 patch they are doing tomorrow (or later today depending on where you are) but the Dev Blog says before the weekend (tm)

For anyone finding slow download speeds, Chribba starts a torrent file for patches that can be faster than the official download.
