Things are seriously taking off for Sony Online Entertainment's newest MMO, DC Universe Online. Just a couple of days after launch, the company needed to open up two new PvP servers (one each on PC and PS3), as the extant PvP servers were slammed full of people, and more were picking up the game daily. Now, due to demand, SOE has decided to open up even more servers, and this time it's not just for PvP -- or North America!
The newest servers -- four in all -- include two new PvE servers for North America: "Last Laugh" and "Relentless" on PC and PS3. Meanwhile, our friends in Europe are getting two new PS3 servers to enjoy: the "Justice for All" PvE server, and "Absolute Power" as a new PvP server. With six new servers online since launching a week ago, it's a great sign that DC Universe Online is attracting a lot of players with it's interesting mix of action-packed game play and story.
[Edited to correct new server name]

That's weird that New Frontier is a new server, seeing as how I've been playing on it since launch.

That's what I get for logging in to check servers being online! XD I inadvertently grabbed the wrong name. The second new server is "Relentless," which I've updated in the story.
Thanks for the catch, and apologies for any confusion it might have caused!

It's great the game is doing so well that new servers are needed, but they'd better get their act together and do something about the stability issues of the already existing servers.
The EU servers they added earlier this week are having major problems. For the past three nights it's been crashing, making the queues on the other ones only bigger.
On top of that, there's absolutely no communication towards the players. The only way to find out whether the server is up yet is by logging in; the launcher gives no info whatsoever. Bad move, SOE.
But the game is a blast. The developers and designers did an awesome job.

Good for them! Here's hoping that they can retain people coming to check out the game after the freshness wears off.
I'm not particularly interested in the superhero genre, but I wish them all the best.

DCUO is great fun, and since my girl and I prefer our MMO's on console, this is our new addicition... or it will be once they get the servers stable and the communication issues worked out. We can't wait to play each day, but we haven't gotten to much, primarily because we can't chat with each other or anyone else.
Still excited to log on... I hope today is better than last night!

Reminds me of Aion at start. Adding server after server - and several months later they had to close them in shame. Muhahahahaha, DCUO, you are dooooomed! DOOOOMED! Not everything with UO in it's name is a gem. :D

I really really want to give this game a try... but...
Everything I've seen so far makes me think it's WoW with superheroes.
Collecting gear to become more powerful, different tiers of gear, clicking skills at the bottom of the screen to perform attacks, raid based endgame, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I love WoW, and I have an active account right now, but I'm just not sure I need to pay for another game that feels the same...
I'd love it if this had a free trial so I could actually see for myself if I'm right or wrong.

It has a number of things going for it IMO. The levelling content is quite good, and there appears to be enough of it that you can get there without having to repeat disliked content. The levelling pace is also quite reasonable. The game runs quite slickly on relatively older systems and does not require cutting edge hardware.
Not sure if this is one for the long haul, but so far it is entertaining.

I wouldn't worry too much about the game feeling the same. I played wow, even bought cata and leveled through the content and I must say that DCUO is close enough to wow that you will know what to do and how things run from the get go, but so far from it that it feels like wow is a small spec on the horizon.
Skills are vastly more action oriented.
Combos, blocking, evading make combat much more dynamic e.g. you will never find yourself sitting in place hitting or shooting things, you are always on the move
I haven't gotten to the endgame yet but the dynamic combat more than makes up for any familiarity there
And gear, well watch some videos and look at the Iconic Battle Suits and tell me you wouldn't want to beat some people up wearing that.
oh and if you are pvp inclined at all go with a pvp server, they are a blast.

Funny that the article picture is of "Amusement Mile". A friend told me DCUO's archaic profanity filter means you can't even say the name of the area in-game because it has the word "semen" in the middle of it. That being just one random insane example of the profanity filter being very extreme and not even having an option to turn it off.

I caved and bought this...and it's pretty good! Even playing on PC with mouse the combat is really fun, and I love the gear system and big, open cities.
Not sure if I'll sub after the first month (lots of games vying for my attention), but for a newly-lauched game DCUO is a nice surprise.

I'm really enjoying the combat style of this MMO. It's taken some getting used to, but the various power/weapon combos make it feel very dynamic. the ability to dodge an incoming attack is a huge plus.
I have a severe case of Alt-itis, and I have about six characters I regularly play.

Is DCUO designed for a controller, or is it a port with tedious controls (FFXI)?
Posted: Jan 19th 2011 5:46PM mechanicalturk said
@Jenks
It is definitely designed for a controller on the PS3. The combat is action-oriented and fast. I can't imagine executing the combos without the controller. It's been a lot of fun for me.
I haven't played the PC version, but I have read that a controller makes for a far more enjoyable experience there as well. I would imagine that it has a similar to the feel of the combat mechanics in DDO. It always felt like that was better suited for a controller (not necessarily for mapping all of the spells). I think DCUO has more depth with respect to the combat mechanics than even DDO.

The games runs on the Unreal 3 engine, and there's no support for point-and-click control in the UI. Unless you're comfortable using mouse and keyboard in FPS games, you're better off with a controller on the PC version.
Note that many of the combat moves you buy with your talent points are activated by button combos, which on the PC means holding this mouse button and clicking the other mouse button however many times. For ergonomic reasons, I wouldn't recommend DCUO for the PC at all without a controller.

@Jenks Dont listen to people telling you the controls are bad. These are the same people that are the dreaded keyboard turners/clickers in wow.
There is a slight learning curve to the controls but basically unless you are dead set on being a nub clicker the controls are pretty good once you get used to them.
Everything can be rebound if you dont like the bindings.

This game is a lot of fun. The problem is the nagging question in the back of my head the whole time being "What is there to keep people paying every month" and i cant really think of anything.
If SOE lives up to their word of regular updates theres hope. I think this massive influx of new players will settle and we will see a lot of people leave but i think it will end up with a respectable community when its all said and done. But thats all dependent on SOE keeping their word on updates.
