There's an image in the heads of many players that developers hand down their plans for the game's direction from a metaphorical ivory tower. RuneScape players, however, got the opportunity to determine the future of the game via a vote -- one that's ended with approximately 1.2 million votes cast in total. Mark Gerhard, CEO of Jagex, stated: "It has been fantastic to watch the community mobilize in support of the update and we can now introduce these features certain in the knowledge that they are what our community wants."
The referendum, set to determine whether or not the game's former Wilderness and Free Trade implementation should be restored, has ended with an overwhelming majority of 91% in favor of the restoration. As a result of the vote's conclusion, the development team has begun work and plans to have the Wilderness restored on February 1st. The open PvP zone has been gone from the game for nearly four years now, but within only a few weeks it will be back for RuneScape players to enjoy -- albeit with a healthy dose of caution.

It's great to see developers doing something like this, I really hope we can see more of this player involvement in the future.

It been a long time since I really devoted time to Runescape. I am talking the days before and right after the 3-D switch. That said, I am pretty happy about this, from a nostalgic point of view. The wilderness was always a lot of fun. Horribly unbalanced, mind you, but a lot of fun. A lot of time has passed though, so maybe the balance was fixed at some point too. Either way, I remember going out there with full prayer, a 2-handed sword, and laughing at those mages feeble attempts to bring me down as their spells harmlessly dissipated around me to the sounds of many anguished cries of 'Hacker!!!'. It used to be so hard to get prayer up to a high level, but spell protection made it so worth while.

@Kaoy I don't think much has changed, you could probably still do that. I believe the "balance" was mostly in the fact that you could pick and choose any skills you wanted. You weren't confined to just being a mage, warrior or archer.
Pures were also balanced more-so by design than any sort of developer intervention. Obby Mauler pures for example, can be bloody lethal, but they don't hit often and their defence stats are very pitiful.

pures are obviously disadvantaged in this way, but advantaged by their low combat level so if they DO catch you off guard, the chances are your defence wont be enough to withstand their mage output and high levels arent able to just smack them silly (assuming theyre in a reasonable wilderness level). However theyre not as common as all that and people are now very good at scarily fast swaps, they'll mage you, you stick protect or deflect mage up and theyll swap to dclaws and spec you to shreds before you realise it.
And just for info, prayer isnt hard to get up anymore, its just expensive, in the region of 400m on dragon bones last time i checked (which was 6months ago to be fair, and there is a new bone out now, and free trade could easily change all that). Unless expensive and hard are the same thing :P
anyway i digress and should really be doing something useful :)

@Bottleskup See, that would be why quit the game years ago. When it started to become more commonplace to see everyone being everything, it became a lot more boring. Plus, the grind culture. Dear lord, somewhere along the line, people started seeing level 80 woodcutting as impressive as level 80 Attack. I would never go back, mind you, but the wilderness just reminds me of what the game used to be, to me.
