For me it was about 8 years ago getting an evasion set from Myth of Soma, took about 3 months of hunting the same monsters to collect the items, then collecting the armour and then one synthesis failed so had to do it over again for one piece, fun...

My complete all purple, all modified to perfect optimisation, weapons and armour for "level any character from level 1 to level 50 in any class" project for Tabula Rasa.

I could provide to myself or any friend the complete load-out in weapons and armour for any path to level from 1 to 50 without been at any moment without purple items fully optimised for his path.

Most definitely the J-Boots in (original) EverQuest. I spent days and days trying to figure out how to get them and work for them. In the end, they eluded my grasp! I'll never forget you J-Boots!!

First super cap for my corp in EVE took a helluva lot of effort from everyone - this was before we realized everyone else was just using bots in alt-corp to grind out the ISK. After that the SC's started to roll in like normal battleships.

GSA (greater shadow amuli) in Asheron's Call. Took Months to get a hold of all the supplies in the early years of the game.

None. If it feels too much like "work," and I'm not having fun, I stop doing it. Nor is there such a thing as prized rare loot, it's all pixels and bytes in the end. I find keeping such a mindset helps me avoid running full tilt on somebody else's treadmill following somebody else's definition of fun.

That said, I have chased some lengthy in time or effort goals for the sake of achieving the goal or as added challenge, rather than for some shiny bits that is supposedly "mine" but really exists on somebody else's server.

Brewing up A Tale in the Desert wines take me 3-5 days to slowly tend vines for grapes (2 hours a tend, but I rather miss the intervals rather than set my life to an alarm clock for virtual fruit), 7-10 real life days to mature in the barrel and after bottling, a good month or more of waiting to develop flavors across the vintages. But the amount of attention or effort per day is minimal.

Chased a Global Agenda helm queuing merc PvP matches nonstop for a week. That was a shade too intensive. Logged out with relief, switched to an alt for a while, and ironically have not logged back in on that character to check if the helm is there. Good enough for myself to know that I hit the victory conditions that I set for myself, based on deciding to fulfill their challenge.

Effort-wise, achieving some of the goals during the last Steam challenge (coughShattercough) involved some dedicated focused intensity over a couple days. Or repeated attempts in Guild Wars to pass some challenging missions (coughShirocough). Rarely motivated by the promise of anything shiny though.

Wizard 1.0 epic in Everquest when they first came out. Stupid rare mob drops. Hated it.

I actually enjoy grinding mobs. I hate run quests. they kill my motivation. So actually i am fie grinding a month for x item. But the moment i have to click on 50 barrels or pick up 10 books around the city i will literally log off.

Pity rift had a lot of those quests.

FFXI: Stage 4 Relic Knuckle: Caestus

This was about 3 years worth of fund-raising, ancient currency collecting, and Dynamis runs. I made the decision to try to get a Spharai (final stage H2H weapon) a little too late in the timeline of the game. Not to long after being at this next to last stage, SE started adding new events and reward weapons that were easier to attain and enjoyed comparable performance. I called it quits after coming to the dramatic realization that participating in any function other than fundraising for this would still take me an excruciatingly long time. Getting 100 100-Byne Bills is no small task. I happily settled with the fact that I can kick a lot of ass in Dynamis.

When I was still young and foolish, I spent many weeks to get my Avadon robe set in Lineage 2. I think it was at least 2 months spent planning, hunting mobs and waiting patiently for other players to sell me the needed components.

It's demoralizing spending so much time and effort, while just about everyone else RMT'd and botted their way through. Seeing morons who know nuts about making adena run about in full nightmare or dark crystal set finally opened my eyes to the futility of playing fair and to the reality of money in the world.

12 hour epic camp of "The Weaver" at RoV in EQ2. Captain T'Sanne in Nek Forest is a close second, back when they had the bug that would make the mob unfightable until server restart if someone /yelled and ran away.
