There are a LOT of ways to use this data without screwing the account holders. The "hacker" is an idiot.

I'd be more sympathetic if this guy wasn't threatening to give away other player's information. There's a difference between making a point and being an idiot, and he crossed that.

LOL. Whomever did this and posted the video is truly brain dead. Even if they use a "burner" (a burner is anything used to cut a trail back to the originator and can be anything from electronics to people to pets), Which doesnt always work, they have left a trail, one that is being happily followed.

This is rich. Folks need to keep in mind they are not as secure as they think they are behind that keyboard. Alot of folks feel they can do anythng with impunity and see no consequence. Back in the day maybe, but now? To much tech.

It only takes a fake restraining order for cause and a few other goodies and your home address will be soon known, even on a forum, dealing of course with the average layperson, though the submitee will be known also, still the bottom line is if you do something like in the article you will be caught eventually, hacker or anything else related to maliciousness is cumulative, the clues and stops add up and one day that doorknock, or no knock comes.....funny stuff.

@Graill440
Track back to what? A public internet connection in another country on a disposable device? Yeah, if he's doing this from a home connection he's a moron and is going to get nailed, but there's no omnipresent netwatch of gooddooers who will stop him if he knows what he's doing. People do this every day without so much as a peep, because they don't get caught.

Hmm, maybe that explains this. I don't really play RoM, but last week I decided to give it another go. Re-setup my account name and password to something new, downloaded the game and jumped in. Made it about 10 minutes and realized I couldn't stand the combat sound effects. Log out, haven't been back in. Several days later get an e-mail. All it says is "You're Runes of Magic account is permanently banned. Contact support @ blah blah blah"

I was kind of freaking out that I had a keylogger chillin somwhere, but several scans/test showed nothing. Hopefully this is the cause.

I have nothing against RoM.. I've enjoyed the game on and off for a couple of years now.

One thing that has always bugged me is their account management and cash shop is not secure, there is no SSL. (https)

That alone has prevented me from ever purchasing diamonds with real money.

"We are anonymous.

We are legend.

We do not forgive.

We do not forget."

If this is from 4chan, there's no stopping them.

I think this is one story that would qualify for the "Controversial Stories of 2011" thread without dispute...

But also, this is a bad advert (whichever way you see the hackers actions) for a company with a major game coming up. It will be interesting to see how Frogster comment on this episode when, closer to TERA's release, reporters start asking questions regarding potential player/customers concerns on account security and their reputation for listening to their playerbase (or not).
