@Dril not to bash you but i cant complain being from the east coast!

now why would they want to put their server on an island again? what if a hurricane takes out all the connections/power to the island?! then we're all screwed!

Hmmm, for a game launching Feb. 4 you'd think there'd be more information out about this game. I have to say I'm curious just to have a look at this particular virtual world.

It seemed interesting until I realized that it's more akin to an updated Planetside than anything. While I love the idea of a "sandbox" MMO, unless I'm mistaken the primary focus of Earthside is constant PVP with some elements of crafting thrown in. I don't see any references, or videos, of PVE action. Can someone who's played it comment?

I have a struggle separating games like this from old shooters like Quake and Unreal Tournament, tbh, except for the fact that gear becomes as much of a deciding factor as skill, eventually.

Why is "Sandbox" so interchangeable with PVP? Are there no sandbox PVE games on the horizon? I had always thought "sandbox" meant that it was an open world with no linear quest structure. (What I consider the opposite of a sandbox are games like WOW have a directed experience, culminating in a PVE endgame with rigid restrictions upon how you can travel about the world and interact with static NPC's.)

Am I missing the point?

@AlienFanatic

Think of it like EVE on foot?

CCP is worrking on a ground combat game to incorporate with Eve online. this is likely something of that nature, from the folks at Masthead. I might check it out, but that seriously depends on whether or not some more enticing information comes to light, other than the blindside release date.

@AlienFanatic Sandbox means freedom, which includes the freedom to attack people if you so wish.

I do however agree this aspect of the game gets an absurd emphasis in most of these games. Sandbox does not only mean you can attack people. It should only be one of many 'player freedom' features such as housing, multiple ways to play the game, no specific end game goal, no classes, player created quests etc.

@End Dream One more thing though. Archeage appears to be a sandbox and it will have PvP and PvE servers. So you might want to check it out.

There are no real sandbox PVE games because what content would there be? Sandbox by definition is open ended, and results in the players creating a majority of the story and life of a server. PVE centric games all require massive amounts of time and resources to create PVE content to beat, and when a studio like Blizzard doesn't have the resources to churn out content fast enough for the mecca of PVE games (WoW), then who will?

Earthrise is slated to have safety areas that people can reside in, but much like highsec in EVE, that's not where the most money is to be had, nor items. Conflict generates content for the playerbase, and for a small studio with limited resources, having the players do a majority of the work for you (provided they are given the tools to do so) is a huge win.

AlienFanatic, Fallen Earth is a (mostly) PvE sandbox MMO. You can avoid not only PvP combat, but combat altogether if you like. There are quests that get you started on crafting, and then you can use the gains to purchase other materials (either from players, the AH, or NPC merchants).

I remember reading a while back that you can pay money to insure what you have on you so you don't lose it. As long as it isn't too expensive that makes it much more reasonable than a game like Darkfall (though I enjoy DF none the less).

1) Is there a pre-order for this game?
2) Will they have a Lifetime Subscription?
3) Why is there little info on their website
4) Why haven't I received my beta key since I sign up for it, like a year ago?

@BubleFett

1) You can pre-order the box copy through iceberg, their publisher. Digital copy will be available through the ER website before launch.
2) They made mention of something like lifetime subs last year, but honestly I hope not. There are nothing but cash grabs for studios that bank on their game not being able to hold the interest of someone for 2 years.
3) They contain most of the information in the forums, but with the NDA still in effect, there has been almost zero leak information from beta iterations. You can take that two ways, either the testers are relatively happy and aren't in 'this game sucks leak mode time', or the testing pool is tiny and very, very controlled (i.e. Friends & Family access).
4) Most haven't received any beta keys, though they should be pushing a few thousand out relatively soon before release. Key word, should, it's still kind of murky. Communication isn't Masthead's strong suit.

Just because you applied for beta, doesnt mean you automatically get it. The culture of entitlement in the MMO genre makes me simultaneously laugh and cry!

Huh. Good for me as I'm on East coast, but I hope the lag isn't too bad for Europe, Africa, and Asia. That would be a downer.

no thanks.

When I have to spend money I earned in game, just to keep what I earned in game.. frankly that's stupid to me.

... instead of pouting you could as an alternative get better at a game so it doesn't happen often. Anyway think of it as a repair bill.
