"One thing that should be looked at again is the melee defense penalty that comes with equipping a rifle. I've never seen a real need for this, and it just makes the unfettered DPS of a dual-wielding melee that much worse."

It's because while FE touts an open skill system, not all skills are created equal and the game design strongly encourages certain decisions.

Eg. regardless of your statistics, most players would be well advised to put as many points into armour use and dodge as they can.

The melee defense penalty strongly encourages rifle-users to put as many skill points into melee as possible, and then switch to melee weapons when opponents are in range.

Also.... melee's two stats are strength and coordination. Coordination is also used for armour use and dodge ---> it's a good stat to max. If you do max coordination (but not strength) this lets you raise melee up to about 80% of max possible.

I'm sorry, but I find it stupid that knockdown is only a melee abililty now. Being shot with a rifle or handgun has some serious potential to knock a person down. It's disappointing to see melee become overpowering in this game and with range weapons getting the shaft. The game must be turning into a fantasy game because no melee can every overcome a good rifle or pistol, at least in any even remotely realistic sense of things. The lack of balance in the game is becoming pretty poor and it looks like my on and off again affair with Fallen Earth is over. I just don't like where the game is going anymore.

Can you tell my main character is a Rifleman? I could respec, but I don't want to. So I'll just quit after giving the game a chance...again.

I can't remember a time when the Rilfes were overpowered i really can't remember. I for one can't really kill a mele in PVP and of course the mele PVPer are whining in the PTS forum cuz they don't want the nerf bat hitting them like it hits us the Rifleman every god damn time! :(
