When it comes to smashing expectations, one MMO that's certainly delivering is Wargaming.net's upcoming title World of Tanks. The game isn't even in release yet, and already it has been pushing out some impressive numbers. Last week, Wargaming.net confirmed that over one million accounts had been registered for its closed beta. That milestone figure is a huge increase over last month's 700,000 registered accounts. The majority of the interest in WoT so far has been in the Russian version of the game, which boasts over 70% of the total accounts registered. It's not surprising that the latest big number to make its way to us from the World of Tanks team comes from the Russian server.
Yesterday, the peak concurrent user number on the Russian server reached a whopping 74,536. Wargaming.net is calling this a new world record for the maximum number of users playing concurrently on the same game server. In the past, CCP Games has claimed a world record for EVE Online based on the peak concurrent users in a single game universe without the use of sharding or instancing. Although 74,536 beats EVE's latest personal record of 60,453, it's known that Second Life broke the 75,000 barrier in 2008 and peaked at just under 90,000 concurrent users in the same game universe the following year. If World of Tanks keeps growing at the rate it is, however, it seems set to eventually top that total and potentially secure a world record of its own.

@SgtBaker1234556
*facepalm* Eves super cluster is probably still more powerful, WoT is a completely different game to Eve, it currently has no real persistent world and is more akin to a fps AND its free!
That and the battles are limited to 30 tanks in total (15 a side) so they dont need to worry about load balancing like the eve servers to, it has no trade system, no really guild/corp/group management and no added extras.
Tbh the comparisons to eve are pretty stupid, its closer to CoD4 and its servers than it is to EvE

I guess I'm a bit out of touch...are there REALLY this many people that want to play a MMO as literally a tank?

@Harley Dude
Yeah!
I mean, you can't make your tank jump up and down like a bunny in a circle to avoid turret fire!
Wtf kind of PvP is that, right?
:P

This article is misleading. The way the game works is you have a garage screen where you can buy tanks, upgrade them, etc. Then, you go into 15 v 15 battles for the actual gameplay. It is not any different than the way many FPS games work online. Classifying this as an MMO is a stretch, and saying that this many people were playing without sharding or instancing is wrong.
As background, I have played in the closed beta for a few months now.

@thewalrii To clarify, the implication that 74,536 players were playing concurrently on the same game server is from Wargaming.net's press release. The exact wording was:
"World of Tanks has set up the new world record for the maximum number of users playing concurrently on the same game server. The peak of 74,536 online players was recorded on January 5, 2011 by the Russian release version of World of Tanks."
Wargaming.net has said that all of those players are playing on one single game server. Without knowing exactly how their server and game world is set up, we can't know for sure how true this is or if the numbers can even really be compared to EVE Online or Second Life's announced PCU totals.

Stop this unimportant blabla about severs.
Thing is, wargaming is developing a pretty nice little action game, and i'm happy they are happy with their 75k players online.
Congrats WoT!

Congratulations to WoT for acheiving the record for the number of people concurrently in a lobby waiting to play the game.

Semantics and mmo vs. lobby arguments aside, World of Tanks is an amazingly fun game, and you should try it. The three new sweetest words in the English language are "Enemy armor destroyed!!" :)

I agree with others, WoT is a far simpler game that EvE online. Besides, EvE online still holds the worlds record for the larges pvp battle of 3000+ in one area. So WoT has a long way to go from their 15v15 battle rooms.
