I'm not sure why there's so much dislike for STO with no real reason to back up those comments. For me, I would have voted for it to be #1 if I hadn't missed the poll.

I'm a huge Star Trek fan and really am enjoying this game and will for a long time. There's so much to do in this game, mini-games that really add a lot of functionality to the game such as Memory Alpha, diplomatic missions.

@Mainer82

If you're a "huge Star Trek fan" that probably has a lot to do with why you like the game so much and can't understand why some people don't.

Personally, I'm indifferent to Star Trek but I still liked playing a sci-fi game with fun ship combat and so much customization. Outside of that, the game was very shallow and I often felt like I was playing a single-player game with a chatbox and monthly sub. I could never find a use for stuff like Memory Alpha (to get new weapons/gear) when all of the content was brainlessly easy.

Disclaimer: I played at launch so maybe things have changed.

STO did not deserve anything.. this year was by and large crap for mmo launches.

It is very obvious that STO fanboys swarmed the site. I would even believe that Cryptic did this themselves lol.

I wasn't expecting it to get the votes. Maybe it is time I come back and give the game another look.

Did anyone actually read the poll to see the competition STO was up against? It was a joke. I mean, STO still should not have won but it was competing against Hello Kitty, Lego Uni, Perpetum....

APB! It beat the game that went under? Haha. No kidding.

STO _was_ a horrible and shallow game at launch. It might be better now but Cryptic burned all their credibility with Champions. Any current fans are playing a much more polished game on the backs of people who supported the game at launch and were ripped off.

So, if you can wave a fanboi flag for STO now and don't care how screwed some of us were by STO and Champs, well, you know where I think you should stick that flag :)

@DrRumpy Of course the current fanbois couldn't care less about the way STO was at launch, they weren't around for the launch.

You could probably say that about most MMO's though, that the current players are playing more polished games now, than when they were at launch. That doesn't make it bad to be a current fanboi of a game.

I can see how people might be upset that a mediocre game like Star Trek Online came out as the best MMOG of 2010, but I can't honestly recall a superior alternative that was released in 2010.

Only Global Agenda and Perpetuum Online come to mind as potential contenders. One of those is a been-there-done-that small-scale third person shooter that was even more lacking in content and variety at release than STO. The other is a blatant reskin of EVE Online with about half the features thrown out that doesn't even manage to hook mech fans like me beyond the first couple of days.

The rest are even worse! All Points Bulletin, Final Fantasy XIV and Mortal Online manage to make the games mentioned above look vibrant, engaging, varied, inspired and polished by comparison. And unfortunately that's not a joke. LEGO Universe almost makes that list as well, but at least has a modicum of potential hidden in that buggy, unfinished, repetitive and tiny mess ... somewhere.

If I hadn't missed it, I'd have voted for STO as well. It may not be a good game, but it certainly seems to qualify as the least terrible new MMOG release of 2010.

do not be disheartened guys.
STO has about 55k customers = Big Fail for Cryptic, as they were expecting at least double the size.
the game is doomed, and in about a year it will be dead , buried so deep, even god will not able to res it.
keep up the good work Cryptic, you are doing a wonderful job with your mediocre MMOs.

My initial knee jerk reaction to this article is a WTF?, but after consideration of the MMO releases in 2010, it is not saying much. Because there wasn't much to speak of that was worth a crap at all. It is logical to assume that if STO is the 'MMO of the year' then it was a crap year for MMO's. And STO is a major fail whether you like it or not; based off a major sci-fi franchise yet the game is barely on par with indie games like EVE in terms of sub numbers. I don't see STO gaining subs in the next year with releases like GW2 and SWTOR.

Well to say that STO was one of the worst games I played this year would be an understatement. I guess some still like it. Kind of feel sorry for those that do because they are missing out on a lot of far better games.

"And yet STO didn't rank among the three biggest disappointments of 2010 -- those dubious honors went to Final Fantasy XIV, All Points Bulletin and None of the Above."

Oh please....

STO ranked third biggest disappointment - unless you assume that more than 90% of those who voted 'None of the above' all would have nominated the same game which massively failed to include in the survey.

And really, there's not that much difference between the three biggest disappointments -- FFXIV, APB and STO - and they all stand out from the rest of the crowd.

Also, note that STO didn't even get a mention in best MMO of the decade - presumably it got a few votes which were included in the 'all other responses' result. That says a lot.

Saying STO was the 'Best' of 2010 merely illustrates what a shitastic year 2010 was for new MMO's.

A game that devolves to circle, shoot, circle, shoot repeat = win (which was basically a copy of an equally crapalicious Pirates of the Burning Sea) and the worst crafting, no, I can't in good conscious call it a crafting system...whatever it was - it sucked rancid goats balls. It was even worse than Talisman 'crafting' in WAR.

When a game is still in launch week and going down far more often than a $2 crack whore its great to see the Developers push on ahead and get some cosmetic mini-skirts out. I almost made it to 30 days.....I thank Christ daily I never went for Lifetime....

Lets just hope 2011 is much better....lets face it, it couldn't get any worse could it?

You know I stand amazed at the arrogance of the various haters who will tell you a game deserves or does not deserve something. ANY game is only as good as the fans think it is. If STO did rally the fans to get the votes for this then that means the STO fans love their game more than the other games listed meaning it DESERVED the vote!

People here seem to have forgotten that for different people different things make great game play. Just because you do not like a game does not make it a bad game, it just means YOU do not enjoy it.

Personally I think WoW is one of the dumbest games ever wirtten but you do not see me rushing to say it does not deserve an award or the accolades of it's fans becuase in the end it is all PERSONAL preference.

STO = third biggest disappointment of 2010.

STO didn't even get a mention in best mmo of the decade because it scored so low.

the only mention of the polls by cryptic was a blurb mentioning the thing and a request that if we had time and wanted to, it would be nice for us to vote for STO. I believe that STO won simply because itis the best out there, period! The others can whine like a ferengi caught with his hands in the gold-pressed latinum drawer all they want. At least for this year...STO RULES!

You have to hand it to STO that you can at least jump into it without too much penalty for being new at MMOs or wanting a very casual game (I know, it can be a bad thing). I tried my hand at EVE and both the game and the community can be very unforgiving to new players. People keep saying there are so many better games out there than STO but fail to mention some - what SCI-FI MMO's worth playing there?
