@Valdamar I'd say this is a fair assessment.

The last 3 MMO's I've played have turned out to be very disappointing, I've had more fun playing through the RIFT beta than I did in the other 3 combined.

I don't think they have a true goal of overtaking WoW. I don't think ANYONE thinks they can overtake wow. I think it's all about convincing as many ppl as possible to come take a look. It's kinda like what Global Agenda sis with the No more elves thing.

@dudemanjac The WoW sequel won't even come near the numbers the original has reached.

I'd agree with that - I was being as tongue in cheek as I think Trion's advert is ;)

@penetraitor
Yeah I don't think Titan or anything else Blizzard or anyone else does can surpass WoW's records either in the West (obviously there are several Asian MMOs with lots more active players than WoW, but very different payment models) - I think WoW was just one of those moments when everything came together - gamers were ready for it, Blizzard had a following, the IP was perfect for it and very popular in its own right, the MMO market was in a lull (like it is now, funnily enough) etc etc. The stars aligned and there was probably a fair bit of luck involved too (it wasn't a particularly smooth launch either compared to its direct competition, EQ2, so we MMO gamers must have been more forgiving back then than we are now).

Bioware's SWTOR probably comes closest to those ideal conditions out of forthcoming MMOs, but while I think they might hit a million or two (and I can quite see GW2 doing 5+ million active players because of its lack of a sub), I think the industry/market is too fragmented now for anyone to dominate in the way that WoW did - it was a one of a kind success, never to be repeated, like the Beatles or the Model T Ford - and that's a good thing, because look at what has happened to the industry in the last 5 years in the wake of WoW's dominance - I don't want another 5 years like that.

I'd still rather be in a galaxy far far away with a lightsaber or better yet a Death Star. LOL

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=52871

I played the trial of CAT a few times (different email accounts and old real account) and thought it was all right, kind of the same 'ol thing with a really fantastic new paint job. In the end its still the same WoW ( not saying thats a terrible thing) but I'm looking for something new and different. RIFT looks cool and the concept of it, rifts opening up and changing the landscape, a ton of character possibilities sounds like a blast.

Then again hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side.

Instant Preorder for the sheer fact they have the balls to tell Blizzard to screw off.

I think the advertisement would have been found more offensive if it had said "you're not in Azeroth anymore" instead of "we're not in Azeroth anymore"

Websites like this one are a waste if time, money and energy by promoting things that will be played by a few hundred people at the most in a couple of months time.

We should conserve our energy to promote good games.

Websites like massively were born through the unexpected millions brought in by WOW.

Please stop referring to this industry of "MMORPG" P2P games as they don't have any ground to get attention.

Promoting duds doesn't help anything: see the last 5 years.

They only help fools to empty their pockets in the vain hope of finding anything to replace WOW.

Because every mmo that has come out since WoW has only gotten a few hundred subscribers. Even if that were true, and it's no where near, that's a few hundred ppl enjoying something besides WoW.

This site is a place where ppl can come together and discuss news that is given on curent and developing mmos. If it was a waste of time and energy. it would be gone. A REAL waste of time and energy is you coming here telling ppl to quit a website just because you don't like it.

Rift... Are we back in Atreia instead? Remember chasing some Rifts there..

Nicelooking add though.

I think many missed that the "we┬┤re not in Azeroth anymore" statement was probarbly aimed at Lunk, who was in the clip as well.

I feel bad for the people defending this game.

WoW clones shouldn't call out the original.

Why feel bad for them? They played it and they liked it. Or at least they like what they see as far as the concept.

I think people are losing sight of the fact that the betas, to date, have all been level 1-20 content (which takes less than a day to complete), and are basing their opinion of the game on two zones, two dungeons and and about 12 hours of gameplay.
The game isn't bad, but it's also nothing new (what game is, these days?). Like others, it's simply a mashup of what has come before with a different story, much like how every first person shooter is basically the same game with a different setting and story. People seem to expect new MMORPGs to not be MMORPGs and to instead be an entirely new genre (in which case, yeah, they wouldn't be MMORPGs).
Rift is the same game in a different package, but that's true of all MMORPGs. It is trying to set itself up as a natural Post-WoW game for people who are tired of WoW and want to try something new, but not too new.
This commercial was a good move by Trion. By calling out WoW they have generated plenty of free advertising and gotten people talking about the game. I call that a win.

@SwagAvid
That's very true - a lot of us got sucked in by Age of Conan being fun for 20 levels.

Fortunately Rift is increasing the level range of their beta test for beta 4 to L25, and if rumours are correct there's going to be 9 beta test phases of 3 days each before they launch, each one pushing the level cap up - and apparently people from betas 1-2 still had their characters in beta 3.

I think Trion are being quite clever using focused testing and trying to push the bulk of their core testers through the same level ranges at the same times - 24/7 beta tests might be ok for people who want to play a game for free, but I'm sure it's not as useful to the Devs as focused testing is - I've been in tons of beta tests and the ones with focused testing phases usually retained more testers than the 24/7 betas did, and likely turned out better as a result.

Pitiful. If you are gonna dig at WoW, at least try to back it up with a game any better than a lame WAR rehash.

Rift is doomed to fail epicly, and Blizzard wont even notice it got released.
