Pretty sure I'll stick with Azeroth until GW2.

I'm not sure why they went that route after playing in several beta events, personally the game felt a whole lot like WoW to me. I think anyone who is expecting something different and unique with Rift will be disappointed.

Nope, we're in Telara Azeroth style.

For all the lessons they learned, I'm shocked they missed the one about not openly challenging WoW.

Interesting. I watched this and smiled a bit. Not sure Trion wants to go toe to toe with the 800 pound gorilla, though. Might not be a good idea. Still, out of every other major MMO out there, RIFT is certainly the second most polished next to World of Warcraft. I'll give Trion that. Bloggers and gamers could argue sandbox versus on rails all they want, but in the end, this is the closest thing I've seen to Blizzard level polish out, hands down. No other game even comes close. And that is saying something.

I've seen videos with Blizzard guys talking and read articles where they say that they play and love other games out there anyway, and that they are always looking for a good challenge from their competitors. It drives them to be even better, like any worthy competitor should. It will be fun to watch what happens comes release. I'm guessing Trion may have the smoothest MMO release ever, but it will be what happens shortly after that which determines the rest.

If they insist on going after WoW's crown though, as a designer for RIFT, I would focus on two things at Trion, the first being the need for quests to utilize new and different, interesting mechanics. Blizzard's team excels at this, and having played the Cataclysm trial, it seems that they have gotten even better. No game, not even RIFT with all its polish, comes close to challenging WoW's quest mechanics. The second thing is to ensure that their endgame PvE and PvP content is reasonably accessible, has varying levels of challenges and rewards (normal/heroic) and is plentiful.

Let's see what Trion can do. I'm already impressed by their efforts. It will be fun to watch.

@Sunlover I agree with you 100% when it comes to the quests. World of Warcraft has really taken the questing to another level in both lore and ways to utilize the questing mechanics. RIFT has alot to learn in this department and has not managed to move past Warhammer or even Daoc in regards to questing.

@(Unverified) Please don't ever mention WoW and DAoC in the same post again. I mean really if that's all you base a game on is QUESTING then it's easy to see why you're in WoW. No game will ever come close to matching what DAoC was back in the day. DAoC basically caused it's own death and if it was released in today's markets knowing what subs actually want in a game it just dang well might have been the WoW killer people don't think will ever happen. Are you hearing me MYTHIC?? DAoC 2 not WAR Go back to what you had at one time and make it better. Build it and they will come. In the Mean time I'm loving RIFT and Loving the fact a small add like this one has drawn attention to many people who may have never heard of the game. Nice Move RIFT Marketing Team!!!!

That was too funny. I sent the link to my brother, an avid, rabid wow fanatic, his response was like any wowfanaticmaniac. (grin)

I got a chuckle out of the spot.

Rift has a good chance of being a successful game. I don't think it will ever see WoW sub type numbers, but if they introduce player housing and even more customization options to the game, then I really suspect they are going to have a large and loyal fanbase.

WoW has constantly shown that homogenized is the way they want their gaming experience to be. Rift wants to diversify your gaming experience. Both games will more than likely excel at those, leaving plenty of room for both to coexist.

For a game patterned after WOW....with lifted WAR and AOC material .....this takes nerve. Then again making a "me too" game and expect to make money....that takes something else.

@Shadanwolf

Thatt worked for WoW, they themselves did exactly what Trion have done, borrow from the genre (the wow devs openly admittted they borrowed really heavily from EQ) & alter where they felt the genre was stagnant while keeping a big chunk of familiarity, just because Blizzard are the mostr successful at doing just that doesn't mean nobody else can't be.

Maybe we aren't in Azerroth anymore, but we are in a mashup of WoW warhammer, EQ2, everquest 1, everquest and many others

many things are directly copy paste from those games.
It's just a huge mix.

And defenately not "next-gen"

Excellent advertisement by Trion. They want people to know their brand names, especially consumers who play WoW. What better way to target them than an ad like this. Sure, most WoW fans would nerd rage but it would be in the back of their mind. Trion wanted WoW players to know about Rift and that is it.

For people saying Blizzard won't even look at this. Think again, Blizzard and WoW is where it is because it carefully looks at competitors and takes what they have done with more "polish".

They will have Rift and any other new MMO on the market on their radar.
