@mmogaddict I also liked Global Agenda's no elves commercials, at least they were funny and straight.

@(Unverified) @paterah Agree with both of you. RIFT's ad is at best silly and at worst misleading. RIFT brings nothign to the table and it's goign to be interesting to see how much of the population will be left 2 months after launch.

One thing I have noticed (in my guilds forums - 40,000 members) though is there is alot of 'I'll try it till SW:TOR' comes out mostly by people who don't play WoW or have been playing Aion/War/AoC or other similar dead/dying mmorpgs, so I think it will be interesting to see what happens to those games when RIFT is released and in turn once SW:TOR hits (and eventually GW2 but I think thats a fair way off and is kinda illrelevant).

Hope the game is worth checking out but after the last few years I am cautious about these things now.

@Celestian don't waste your time. The quality is near "Perfect World co" f2p games.

Provoking Blizzard fanboys is never a good idea. They can make games that compete with WoW crash and burn completely by virally spreading bad reviews of products that they barely played.

Trion shouldn't have poked Blizzard.

I call BS. WoW Fanbois can't make sucky games fail.
Sucky games make sucky games fail.
Rift isn't one of them.

We're not in Azeroth anymore, but here are a bunch of things you've already seen in Azeroth.

@DrewIW Well a fantasy game is bound to have similarities.

No not really. Fantasy means fantasy. At some point people decided that it meant Tolkein.

Your reasoning is a bit flawed ; Tolkein created fantasy as we know it.

Look at a Final Fantasy title post VI, the Last Remnant, the Shin Megami Tensei series (I wanted to cite some western fantasy MMO's/RPGs, but not a damn one comes to mind that isn't Tolkien-esque right now)....

I'm not putting them up on a pedestal like they're some great wonderful paragons of game design and originality since they're just as subject to cookie cutter clichés and repetitive concepts as their western counterparts, but at least they've realized that a fantasy story can exist without elves, orcs, dwarves, and the rest of Tolkien's standbys.

@Audacious Yet...those games still have similarities regardless. Some monsters may not be called Orcs, Harpys, Elves, or Dragons, but they certainly are close relatives and cousins. Bahamut is still a dragon no matter what crazy armor they put him in, some random ghost in an RPG that's not called a ghost is still a ghost.

And an MMO that doesn't follow Tolkein like things would be Age of Conan. But many consider that generic fantasy as well.

...So, haven't been reading much in the fantasy genre outside of Sword and Sorcery, have you?

As someone who likes the quirkier books in the Fantasy genre, there are delights like Terry Pratchett (his elves are more like the Fair Folk of old), Neil Gaiman (Not Tolkien'esque at all, I would say), and Anne Rice (don't knock the horror vampires when they are creepily well written).

Of course, this is nodding to Urban Fantasy, a sub-genre of Fantasy. The Sword and Sorcery genre seems to have stalled a bit, but what boggles me is that there is still so much room to work...

Also, similarities or shadows don't really matter. Myths from two ends of the world have shadows and similarities of each other. Like every culture has a freakin' dragon. Getting a little inspiration from Tolkien isn't the issue, or getting inspiration from the same myths that inspired Tolkien. I just want people to stop ripping huge chunks off Tolkien's work, plopping it in their own, and calling it good.

With that said: I like WoW, but there is a reason I play trolls mostly. After all, http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AllTrollsAreDifferent

yeah, nice commercial for a game that's no more than average.
Don't try to buy ppl with a graphic that's not the in game one, and a so shallow lore that can't convince a dog !

Terrible game, average implementation of western clichés, almost no lore and terrible gameplay that have nothing special.

Anyone is better playing in Azeroth or Atreia. Even ffxiv is better than rift.

"have you ever seen a WoW commercial that isn't CG...?"

Those "celebrity endorsement" commercials only use shots of the celebrities and in-game graphics.

@SOLIDAge William Shatner's Shaman is Chain Lightning your silly-ass face off...and he's doing it without any CG.

Also Ozzy is saying something...about something...to something...really can't tell with him. Drugs were less than kind.

@Channel84

yah, sorry but i'm a motion designer and i'm used to video making, putting stupid fast scenes of not so interesting things after a major cut of a big shot doesn't count very much on the audience preview.

and so that i know, i've played the rift beta tests, i know very well what i'm saying.

Good for you if you liked, but all in all, the quality still as average as "Perfect world co" games.

@SOLIDage Yeah ffxiv used cg too... lest go and check the ffxiv actual graphics ? bet they're very near the cg ones.
And also, for blizzard, no matter how much we hate or love her, can make a commercial with a poo in a garden and still sell millions. let's face real facts.

everyone is hyped in this game by the simple fact it's not korean crap, it's western crap. well.... i have a feeling we were better with the korean kind of poo.

I was one of the ppl heated up with the rift tittle too, until i logged in the actual game.
You know, if you're not make good graphics you have 3 options : amazing ffa pvp (aka UO), very nice storyline or a very polished theme park. Rift isn't any of these.

I'll just wait 2 month after the game is in retail and hear what is the new lies the fanboys will say to themselves on this tittle. i'm really curious here.
