When I cam across this game a long time ago, I was really impressed with the fact that it was a complete MMOG done with Flash-based tools. I've worked in Flash for several years off an on so that's why it amazes me what Flash can do.

Hi beau
I remember you from Vanguard! Ive been following a game called Wakfu that Im very excited about! it seems very similar to this. I may give the Dofus a try until Wakfu is released.

Thanks

@warpax If I recall, Wakfu is actually the chronological sequel to Dofus(same world, only after the Dofus eggs have been recovered).

Also, I played Dofus for a bout 3 months, oh... 3 or 4 yeas ago now? Maybe 5? How old is the game? I think it was celebrating it's one year anniversary at the time I started, so that should be some clue. Anyway, I loved the game play and the quests were clever. I remember one in particular where I was told to go pick a wild flower, only for it to end up that they meant a totally different type of 'wild' that I was imagining. A basic fetch quest became an epic boss fight in no time.

I only quit because I was playing one of the time mage guys. It was a lot of fun, but I went more for the support/AP-suppression build. After 3 months of play, I started to reach a point where even my best suppression spells weren't enough to fully stun lock a single mob, and my damage was to heavily sacrificed, considering that most players preferred to think of them as a DPS class. Eventually, I stopped being able to find parties tat would keep me for more than a few fights before the replaced me(fairly, though, since the game gets pretty tough later on). I didn't have the will to start over, so I quit. Still miss it a bit, but I really prefer it would go for a more F2P style. As it is now, its more like a short 10 hour-ish preview.

I've been complaining on that game for YEARS about the lock system. Why can't you toggle the lock to be on all the time not to let players in your battle? Instead you have to scramble to click to lock them out (and then lock out spectators if you don't want people watching you) each and every single battle you get into.

I don't know what it's like now, but it used to be they could kill you when they did this. So they'd join in on your battle, then kill you instead of the monster, and laugh about how fun it was.

Years and many updates later, you still have to click that button every single battle. Gee Akama, thanks.

I really want to play Wakfu, but if it's the same "Click this tiny dot quickly to stop others from joining your battle" system that Dofus still uses I am going to pass.

Love the show Wakfu. Simply outstanding.

Really looking forward to Season 2 this year.

The game doesn't interest me all that much though.

For some reason I always thought Dofus was a French MMO. From a French developer I mean, not in French. Ankama doesn't sound like a French name, though.

I have it on my desktop from when I took a lot at it a couple of years ago but I've never really played it. I do remember that it looked great and the detail in the world was fascinatng. Maybe I'll get back to it some day. So many games, so little time.

(I am still playing Crowns of Power on and off, though, Beau, which I came to from one of your early R&S columns, possibly the first one. Always fascinated to see what gem you'll dig up next).

I don't know where the name comes from but they're indeed a french developer.
They're established near my hometown in the north of France.

While dofus may look simple its one of the most hardcore games I've played. It can take a year to get from level 199 - 200 alone.

Dofus goes to level 200 and most players multi-client 3,4,5,6+ p2p accounts, so its a mmo at almost feels like an rts at times.

I've been a huge fan since 2005

I should add I have accounts for wow, eve, warhammer and many other mmos so trust me when I say this game looks simple but is pretty epic.

If something is behind a building or tree, there is "transparency mode" it's in the options under features, or you can just right-click the screen and turn it on, and some other usefull stuff too. I think most higher level players always play with transparency on. Also when you go in a building, it's not "instanced" it's live and anyone else can walk in there, for examples someone could have come in to help you make potions in the 1st building, and in the 2nd one when you left someone had dropped a free cat pet on the ground by the door, you could have picked it up and got a free cat. Another tip, some spells are area of effect, like when you were fighting the 4 flowers and 3 of them were lined up by the rock, you could have damaged all 3 and pushed them all back 1 spce with your "burning arrow" spell. I started with the same class as you, the archer class, and I've been playing over 5 years. Dofus is a great game.

Also, the problem some of you are having with other pople getting in your fights: If you are in a group with at least 1 other person, there is an auto-lock to keep non group members out of your fights. This can be turned on or off. If you are not in a group, you have to click the lock button, and if someone jumped in your fight before you locked it, you can click on that person and select "Kick" and they will be gone.

And right now they're celebrating Christmas and New Years, there is a whole island called Kwismas Island, it closes in a week or 2, and some of those monsters have invaded Astrub, right where you made your video. You get presents when you kill them!

Playing Dofus for a year now, I would like to add several things.

Firstly, the bot problem seems to depend very much on the server you play on. Since I am german, I play on the german server Nehra, there are some bots but their numbers are low compared to other servers and not an issue.

Then, its a subscription-based game. You can play for free and walk around freely in the world, but without sub you can only interact with NPC's, mobs and items in the srtarter zone and a small area around Astrub, the largest city. Which means, if you subscribe, you will be able to move to areas where there are even less bots, since the bot operators need to pay to get to that area.

Subscriptions howver on the other hand are quite low. If you pay for a year in advance, it will only cost 48€ (I'm not sure about the $ prices), which makes it 4€ a month - I don't even start thinking about that.

Lastly, the game gains strategic depth the more you advance. There's quite a number of dungeons with tricky end-bosses and beating them can be fun and rewarding, as the turn-based fight system is something you rarely see in other games.

I surely do enjoy my time in the game. It's a small download and definitely worth a try.

I keep thinking about downloading this but never get around to it. Judging from the pics, it looks like Final Fantasy Tactics or something along those lines?

@SocksForYou I haven't played FF Tactics but I believe that both these games are turn based combat, with a short amount of time to use your movement and attack. I assume in FFT that you would be moving more than 1 fighter. Many new Dofus players don't realize that you can EASILY play more than 1 character, just make more than 1 account (they can be free accounts) and log on them all at the same time. You can run around with several characters wherever you want (same screens or different screens) and you can join them all into the same fight (up to 8 on the same team). This adds a lot of strategy and gives you an advantage in hard fights because it's like you have a small army. Some people choose to only use 1 character, while other players creat teams of characters that can work together to help each other or to help your friends.

You can download Dofus in just a few minutes (as long as you aren't using dial-up) and try it for free. If anyone reading this decides to try it, make sure you choose RUSHU server because it's a very old, stable good server with lots of people of all levels, poor people, rich people, people with all professions so anything can be crafted that you might need (newer servers have problems not being able to get what you need) and it's the server that Beau is on, and me and several other pople that posted here.

Rushu server!!! :D
