Its a shame that despite defining 'next-gen', Rift still doesn't fit the bill.

The rest of the list is spot-on, though!

@Lucien I agree whole-heartedly. Good game, but compared to the rest, doesn't warrant a monthly sub (in my opinion)

@Baromega Rift doesn't have a whole lot of new content/features, but the quality of it [I believe] deserves a monthly sub. The gameplay itself isn't very next gen but the server-side handling of the game seems pretty next-gen when you read some of their dev interviews.

Overall though I think rift will be more successful than the latest similar games (WAR/AoC/Aion/FFXIV). Definitely not going to get close to toppling WoW though.

[Off-topic]
The only thing that is going to kill WoW is itself unfortunately, I wish there were official Vanilla servers because the game died the moment the level cap was raised. :(

"The gameplay itself isn't very next gen but the server-side handling of the game seems pretty next-gen when you read some of their dev interviews."

I think this is what is meant by next-gen, too. You'll note they're very careful not to assert that the gameplay is what is next-gen ;).

I am in no way making excuses for Trion and was, in fact, very silent on the subject of Rift until I got into beta, but the fact that they could push these huge invasion events on 500+ people without having the server melt or having GMs run the elite mobs might just be a game-changer.

MMO players will yawn after five minutes and say "next," (already happening and it's still in beta!) but the next round of MMOs in development will be taking note.

@Baromega

Compared to the rest of what? Games you haven't seen nor played? What a marketing tool you are.

Rift is so horrible. Sad that Massively has sold out to them in such a big way.

@ManaByte You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I was expecting a cinematic trailer with RIFT and not something like a sales pitch from an infomercial

@mandarin Yeah, this list is more of a "what we're excited about that has a trailer" then a list based on the quality of the trailers themselves.

@Averice

What MMOG trailer would you replace the Rift one with? Its slim pickings once you get past the other 4 on the list.

I wasn't a fan of Incursion at all. I loved the trailer before that one, for the Terra whatever it was called expansion, for planets.

I also found the Rift trailer lacking. Even though I am enjoying the game in Beta 3, but the trailer didn't really make me go whoa!.

The rest of the list I agree with completely.

I liked the dominion trailer more than the incursion one. Anyone else feel the same way?

Even though I'm.. IN the Rift trailer itself, Trion needs a real, impressive trailer. An actual cinematic one. And the one that they have as the new game intro is totally underwhelming and cheesy.

Game is a buy from me, and at least 1-3 month sub, AND I'm quite impressed with their rift/invasion/foothold mechanic, but I eagerly await the inclusion of far more fluff/lore/customization/etc features. It's an amazing base to work off of (the 'bones' are next-gen, the 'muscles' are toned), but it needs to hook as many people as possible right out the gate (the 'skin' is beautiful, but needs a more immersive experience).

It'll likely be a 7/10 at least for me on launch (6/10 currently, but beta is impressing more and more). It can grow to a 8/10 if the dev team takes feedback seriously and acts on it as quickly/best as possible. It can be a 9/10 not at launch, but over time, hopefully.

Bring on Rift! :)

I'm in the Rift beta, so far it's pretty polished as for as a standard MMO goes. I like the fact that you can select your own skill tree combos to maximize your own play style. There are a lot of interesting trees to choose from with each class but nothing we haven't seen before tho. Graphically the game looks good, there is a lot of fps slow down when you have a lot of players in one area but that happens in most MMO's. Too me there isn't enough voice over work to put it over that edge of immersion like some games coming out soon, not that most titles can compete with SW:TOR and GW2 on that front but I have to admit I haven't played very far into the game yet so if there is more VO speak up. The invasion events are pretty cool, there was one I was in when the rifts were opening all over the place and you couldn't go any where without having to fight elite mobs, didn't matter if you tried to sneak by or not they would catch you lol. Over all it has every thing a fantasy game needs to be good, the problem is it's another fantasy game. I'm looking forward to playing SW:TOR, waiting patiently I might add.

@SwobyJ, I think you hit the nail on the head. It does have some very good bones to the game, and I personally think it will be alot better if we had a chance to get to the max level, but it is pretty strong right now. No, it will never beat WoW based on the simple fact that it has an enourmous player base and is, whether you like it or not, a very solid game and polished extremely well. Rift does come very close, and I do believe that it has the potential to at least take my subscription from WoW. It seems to take the best aspects from different MMOs, such as WAR and some of WoW's stuff, which is a good start IMO.

O, I also have been playing the DC Universe Beta, you can call me sir crash a lot lol. They have been doing a lot of improvements in the last 2 weeks but I really can't see it being a long term MMO. The game play is fun, it has that just right VO work to make you feel like your in the DC universe with the communications with your mentors and your Oracle or mmmm, can't remember the criminal version but it's nice to hear the mission updates as you go though the story events. The power sets are kinda a disappointment, the character customization isn't all that great, not as good as COH or Champions, and having PS3 player and PC player on the same server is going to put PS3 players at an disadvantage to the PC user. I haven't tried a controller but I can't see it being better that a keyboard and mouse. Again I would rather wait for TOR or GW2 to come out and save me the money.

As much as I love several of those on this list, I wonder where you would have placed the WoW: Cataclysm trailer.

rift officially lost me at:

"the next level."

really. if advertisers keep using bad catch-phrases like that to sell their product - and not let the game either speak for itself, or use better english, then i'm simply going to refuse to part with my money.
