It's the end of the month, and if you're following Age of Conan, you know it's time for the traditional letter from the game director. Funcom's Craig "Silirrion" Morrison obliges us with a lengthy look back at 2010's AoC milestones as well as a glimpse of what's coming in 2011.
In addition to continual content rollouts and tweaks of the current 2.1 build (which is set to include two new Pai-Kang 6-man instances, new tier four Jade Citadel raids, a solo daily instance, and two new auto content generation dungeons), Morrison hints at a possible tie-in with the forthcoming Conan motion picture. "Some of the things [on tap for 2011] might just relate to the return of the great barbarian to the silver screen later this year in the form of the new Conan movie. That is something we are very excited about, and means there is great potential over the coming year, with a lot of renewed interest in everything Hyborian," he writes.

This is good news, but it's hard to get too excited about it when a character in AoC is, to put it in your words from your "fear of FFA PvP" article, "less of an individual and more of a pre-scripted bot that can only go certain places, wearing certain things, at certain times." A movie might rekindle some small interest in the MMO for a bit, but the base design isn't likely to change and interest will wane again pretty quickly. I think many would-be players already understand this and I don't think it's wise for Funcom to get their hopes up too high. There will also be a number of other newer MMOs released by then with the beginnings of dynamism and they will have garnered our attention.

That line wasn't exclusive to AoC though, that's my opinion on basically every themepark game from Aion to WoW. I enjoy AoC for what it is (a quest grinder with very high production values). Not many games do that particular niche better, imo.
If I had my way though, it'd be a sandbox.

I hope the Conan movie will be a nice boost for AoC, but I agree that Funcom shouldn't count on it to gather and keep a ton of new players. The only thing able to do that is the content of the game itself.
I also agree with Jef in that AoC is great at what it does. As a Online PVE Conan RPG, I had a blast with it. The game's production values; the art, motion quality, music and more, are all top tier. If you are a fan of Howard's stories, Conan art, or Conan in general, AoC is very satisfying.
