It's never been a better time to be a fan of the final frontier, particularly with Star Trek Online's recent Season 3 update. But if you've been biding your time on STO, just waiting for that perfect deal, today might be your lucky day.
Amazon is selling the digital download version of STO for a mere $2.50 -- and that includes a full month of gameplay. Seeing as how a month's subscription runs around $15, it's quite a steal. But we'd advise you to go for the deluxe edition of STO on Amazon instead. For $5, you not only get the game and 30 days of play, but also a classic series uniform set, the Joined Trill race and a handful of other goodies that would cost you well over $10 to buy separately on the C-Store.
Speaking of Cryptic's in-game store, the company has announced that all C-Store items (excluding the two newest additions) are 20% off from now through January 3rd, 2011. Since a wise starship captain is frugal with his ship's budget, this seems like the perfect time to snatch a few bargains without worrying about breaking the bank.
[Thanks Omali!]

This is actually a really good deal if you're at all interested in trying Star Trek Online.
Just thought I'd state the obvious before the Cryptic-Hate Brigade comes in and does their usual thang ...

@mysecretid Well despite your obvious attempt to troll people into responding negatively to your little jab, it is actually a really good deal. I pretty much despise STO for its lazy developing and making C-Store top priority over much needed content and fluff, but being able to purchase a complete MMO for only $2.50 that comes with 30 free days, that's an extremely good deal no matter how lacking a game may be.

@CCon99 Jesus, CCon99. I was trying to be funny about the level of ire Cryptic provokes. Take a breath, would you? This is something like the third time you've gotten all twitched at me in a post because I happen to like a game you don't. Whatever anger is here isn't coming from me; you're bringing it in with you.

It is a good deal. My advice though would be to buy it and not activate it until Cryptic releases the Foundry. (User generated content). I think it would be worth much, much more then.

I got two copies for my wife and I, but I am absolutely convinced that the game will be free-to-play by the time I decide to activate them.

A demo that lets you go all the way to the end without not having to spend a dime and the only caveat is that you don't get as many unneeded powers and customization as a sub?

@mysecretid LOL, I'm definitely not "twitched" at you. I just pointed out your obvious attempt to provoke that same ire here, then agreed with the rest of your post on the deal being a good deal. Why do you care if others like or not like a game or a developer? And please with the "I like a game you don't" innocent act. You're the one giving your opinion, then labeling others with differing opinions as a "hate brigade" because they don't share your opinion.
Sorry you feel I pick on you, but to be perfectly honest I don't remember ever responding to you before, that's not saying I haven't, I just don't remember ever seeing your name before (unless you changed it since the big site update).

Ok in case anyone didnt know you can use the amazon digital DL code for $2.50 get 30 days then buy the deluxe for $5 for another 30 days + 500 c-store credits and the bonus items the time stacks so you get 60 days+the deluxe bonus items & 500store credit for $7.50.And from what I gather on the sto forums you can also stack a retail versions time on that too making it a total of 90 days with whatever the retail ran you added to this-which Amazon also has the retail Collector's edition on sale for $6.99.

That's almost exactly what I did. I already had the boxed Collectors Edition ($7), non-activated. I bought the regular digital version for $2.50 & activated. Bought the digital Deluxe version for $5 & activated. Then activated my Collector's Edition. $14.50 for 90 days & 500 cryptic points, not to mention all the goodies from Digital Deluxe & the CE!
And since I already had the boxed CE, I could install from disk. But I am still waiting for my update to finish. :-(

That would still be 60 days for $7.50. That is still around a 75% savings for 2 months of time. You can essentially look at it as getting the software for free and then paying only 25% of the premium subscription price for two months of game time. that is plenty of time to figure out if the game is for you or if it is not.
I'm thinking y'all better hurry before this opportunity goes away.

I'm not overly interested in STO -- I was in the beta briefly, and wasn't a fan. But for $5? Yeah, I'd give it a whirl. Too bad it's US only.

I was in Open Beta and was one of the zillions of people who pulled the plug on the game after the free month expired.
I've kept tabs on the game, mostly here at Massively, and it's nice to see Cryptic has made some much needed improvements.
In my opinion it's still not worth the subscription fee, however. So my advice for "deep space exploration on a budget" would be to wait for this game to go F2P.

The possibility of going F2P is definitely a possibility, but since they already have plans and are working on content for "Season 5", and they only have just released Season 3, I really wouldn't hold my breath. Despite all the negativity surrounding the game, its still doing surprisingly well and the game is far from empty. (Plus, it probably doesn't cost as much to host fewer servers, so they don't need millions of people to sustain the game)
