Not quite sure how this will work as far as latency etc but if they have the technology to make it smooth globally then it should be great (albeit congested, maybe) and really contribute to immersion!

Guess that's good news for those of us in NA who are looking forward to Earthrise. And while I like the idea of a single game world, I'd be worried about lag and what it means for combat...

Guess we'll see!

that sounds good!
Now, give us an OB so we can burn your server,
And sadly, check if the game is playable :p
As in the latest gameplay video ... well ... the whole game looked quite horrible :/

if they do it properly like eve (and get the servers in the UK (where the eve servers are located if memory serves me right)) then it should be fine. Those who are familair with eve know how it is done and that the latency isn't a problem.

My own worries will be the guild pvp and how that will affect the game and latency and how/where to buy it.

It's been a while since a good Sandbox has come out, might this be the contestant we are waiting for?

/goes back to eve for now.

@Pilgrim
Not sure if EvE is a good example since although it is a single shard, EvE uses a very different targeting system for combat. I think Earthrise's (from what I understand) is much more sensitive so this could still be a problem.

Also that link doesn't talk about NA release still. If the Europeans get a headstart isn't that sort of important in a sandbox game?

@Mhaer There is some valid points in what you say.

Eve has a different locking system to target players (abit akin to the soft lock of ER). However in large fights and details on, you will be hard pressed to get that lock, you will see your cycle for weapons not reacting (that is one of the worst things in eve IMO). so it works different.

You are also correct about the US release (or rest of worldwide). I do feel however it will be released at the same time (just a feeling on my side).

@Pilgrim
latency is always a problem. Anyone who thinks a 250 ms ping is just as good as a 25ms ping has never had a 25ms ping before. I really wanted to get into that latest robot sand box mmorpg from europe but the 700 ping killed it. I imagine it will be the same for this game as well.

@Langx2 somehow with eve, I hardly notice it, and same goes for people from the US/EU on it. that might be because of the server setup or so, not sure.

When I play any other MMO I do notice the difference, but with eve, not really.

This seems more like a PR move to cover the fact that they do not expect a lot of players.

Hmmm I have to agree that the one global server thing sounds like it is indicative of small game population. I am still interested in this game and its potential to be fun and interesting. Heya Masthead, all I want for Christmas is a beta invite hehe...oh wait, that would be about all I GET for X-Mas this year.

@Ryukan

Ten Ton Hammer had a whole bunch of Earthrise beta keys yesterday... don't know if they're still around, but if you want one, its worth a shot...

Sounds like a bad idea to me, although I would love for more games to adopt this, I don't know if the technology...Or rather the ability to keep up and properly handle this technology is there. Kinda screams "bad idea" to me but we'll see.

This sounds like a great game, and I was not especially put of from the beta video. It looked pretty fun to me. I mean many games have flawless beta vids and the game ends up horrible.

I have a suspicion however that this game will be pretty broken at launch, and as we all know all that matters is 1st impressions as far as games go.

I am going to wait until release and see what people have to say before jumping in.

The only real concern I have is much like every one else, latency on an over seas connection from the US. Another factor would be if these game blows up and the server fills up how are they going to manage it? Because there are a lot of sandbox game lovers out there waiting for a good sandbox to play in, specially a sci-fi sandbox game. I've been following the news and updates for a while, from what I've read so for I would probably play these game so hopefully the single share server doesn't kill it.

Love when they aim for a single worldwide shard, it means they developed with a massively world in mind.

Heh, Darkfall all over again. They started with a single EU server too.

EvE proves that the one server solution is paramount to creating a game with real community, not some fake crap like the rest of the industry puts out with segregated factions, etc.

This is the best thing they could have said would happen.

The latency from Australia will mean it's impossible for me to PvP and since most of the game economy will revolve around protecting caravans of resources from other payers, I'll be royally screwed. Big shame as I was really looking forward to this game (for a long, long time).

Weird.

Anyone else getting redirected to:

http://forums.play-earthrise.com/warning.php

when you try and link to the Earthrise page from the picture link in this article? Apparently I have a virus on my "computer", but my "computer" is a Samsung Galaxy S running Android 2.1

Any ideas?

As a European playing Fallen Earth, I had no problems playing on the single American server in regards to lag. And I'd say that is probably the closest to Earthrise I can compare.

So the reverse situation should also be no problem, especially if the server is in the UK.

If it is a problem... lots of easy kills for me I guess *rubs hands together* :D
