It is very clear from the way this search works that SE still doesn't understand that keyboards exist for you to TYPE WITH. Why do I need to navigate through 5 menus when I can just TYPE THE NAME OF THE ITEM I WANT. I think I'll continue to wait to install this game until they figure out that PC players shouldn't be treated with gimped UIs designed for a console.

@delphinius81 you seem not aware that all caps doesn't add any kind of validity to your post. If they didn't understand that, they wouldn't have already announced that keyword search is already planned to be added to the system.

But I know, getting your facts straight is SO hard, rite? :D

@Abriael

Bleh. The caps are more for my own cathartic benefit than because I think it makes a different to SE. :) I don't actively monitor every FF14 news site for info about the game, so I'm kind of working with the information I've seen posted on Massively and in comments by people who are actually playing.

Hopefully they deliver on whatever rumor I heard about a new PC version UI.

@delphinius81
Merely typing the name of the item you want into the search is for casuals.

FFXIV is hardcore, or so I'm told.

But in all seriousness, I hope they get to work revamping this UI soon.

While this first step is really great it's not without its flaws. I was able to find the weapon I needed in record time courtesy of this new search function but it's easy to see how this will need to be tweaked.

First, the search function doesn't show the price range for the items you're searching for. Not a huge deal as this isn't intended to be an auction house.

Second, let's say you're on Marauder and you're browsing for a new weapon. The item display window that shows the weapons stats doesn't show how they compare to your current weapons stats like it does when you already have the weapon in your inventory or when you're browsing someone's retainer.

Third (The big one), Since people are only able to employ two retainers per character at this time you're forced to sell items in the wrong ward. So if you're retainer is setting up shop in the Battlecraft Ward to sell your lance but you have a piece of armor to sell also then you're unable to have people search for that armor since it's not in its proper ward.

I'm really enjoying this game and looking forward to future improvements to the system. Eliot, thanks for keeping us all up to date on all things Final Fantasy XI and XIV.

@Mevan

I couldn't agree more on point number 3.
This simply means that if I am looking for let say "maple branch" and I don't find it in the woodcrafter den, I have to search all other den as well and hope I find it there.

This retainer system is simply crap.
e.g. I have been searching for "brass plate" for a couple of days, searching many dens. only like 2 days ago I found it in the crystal den??? WTF

This new search though it is better then before it does not resolve the issue of find the wrong item in the wrong den.
an AH would resolve the issue of organizing items in the right place.

I am heavy crafter and I spend up 30-60 minutes looking for items daily, this is not practical.

And what's more if I am looking more then one item do I have to search multiple times?

I hope you will improve this retainer system and not think that you have found a solution with the search function.

SE you create a heavy duty crafting mmo but make it impossible/difficult to find items. make no sense

@fredtma for a crafter, you didn't figure the fact that brass plates may be hard to find not because of the ward system, but simply because they're not very rewarding to make both monetarily and skillup-wise. They start not to give much skillups at all at level 20, and require one ingot per plate.

This means that people will make them only when they actually need to use them, and won't normally make them just to put them for sale on their retainer.

Would have saved you a lot of trouble to just hire one of the many armorers crafting in limsa to make the plates for you.

I know, interacting with people directly in a MMORPG... what a preposterous idea :D

I'm feel for all the FF fans. But to see the ignorance of developers rewarded by sad sales and the hammering by fans....well, it just brightens my holiday season. Here is a toast to you, may your game finally become what it should........... in a year or two.(grin)

This slow, painful, crawl towards the obvious solution is kind of depressing to watch.... Give it up SE... everyone everywhere knows the exact solution to this issue, and I know you know what it is too. Get it done already.

A bandaid patch for a hemorrhaging game. Its fascinating, in a way, like watching a trainwreck in slow motion. Good stuff.

I really don't get it, SE. Do you have ears to listen, eyes to see, hands to play, brains to think? I doubt it.

All of the anticipation for this search function just to be let down... massively... I should have seen this coming seeing how terrible and late the what should have been simple "sort" option was.

I know I know... we expect to much and fixes are coming and we need to be more patient blah blah blah....

How about them U-Conn Ladies? Grats Ladies!

Gotta love all the armchair developers screaming "it's simple! Do it already!"

of course they have not the slightest idea of what's simple and what is not, but their little brain can't cope with the notion that implementing features isn't as easy as just flicking a switch on and off.

Even more obviously, most of those people never played the game, and never will, but they love to rile on it because of the usual reasons.

By the way, the item search function is already very workable. There's room for improvement, but it's fast and easy to use. Yesterday evening I had absolutely no problem finding the items I was looking for.

Truth is that FFXIV evolved surprisingly fast, in just three months since launch the game has improved tenfolds (more than any MMO out there) and is already very enjoyable. There are many people looking forward to what's to come with it.
They did more and faster than any other MMORPG developer that had a rocky start, and differently from most of them, didn't start charging the monthly right after the first month regardless of the game's condition.

But haters gonna hate.

"Truth is that FFXIV evolved surprisingly fast, in just three months since launch the game has improved tenfolds (more than any MMO out there)"

No it has not. They are just now implementing feedback that was given by players in CLOSED BETA. This is not evolution, this is the game finally getting to where it should have been at release months ago. They have added a handful of mobs and a few features. Nothing ground breaking or praise worthy. SE released a broken game and they are fixing it, but, fixing bugs is hardly a 10 fold improvement and certainly has not improved more than ANY mmo out there.

No one here is saying making these changes is easy. What we are saying is that the game is/was lacking SIMPLE functionality such as search & sort that should have been there at release.

Please do not assume that because some of us do not like the game currently that we have not played it. I have been playing since CLOSED BETA and am an owner of the CE. I am still playing the game, albeit, less frequently, but I am still playing, hoping things get better. The truth is, SE ignored most player feedback since Alpha. Some of us put a lot of time into properly submitting feed back and bug reports just to have it all ignored.

You are obviously blinded by your fanboyism.. That's fine. But don't be so ignorant to pretend that there is nothing wrong with the game and all is well... because it is not. Crapping on people who are not happy with their purchase does not put you above them. Perhaps you would have better discussion if you were not so condescending and blatantly bias.

I appreciate your love for the game, I really do. I am not a happy customer. The game is not free just because there is no sub atm. I and many others have purchased this game too and are allowed to be disappointed.

I have misplaced my rose colored glasses and grape kool aid so please forgive me.

Wow, an mmo has an ability to search for items. Stop the presses! Please, get real massively. This would be like reporting on ms word having a spell checker in 2010.
