After a much needed push-back from the original launch date of November 2nd, Sony Online Entertainment has set a new launch date for DC Universe Online. We announced a rumored launch-date move yesterday. And today, SOE has confirmed that its new action-MMO will launch on January 11th, 2011. Game Director Chris Cao sent along this statement: "Creating DC Universe Online has been a massive undertaking, and we're excited to be that much closer to launch. We're grateful to our beta players for providing us invaluable feedback in these final stages that has enabled us to put the finishing touches on a fun and exciting experience when the game launches in January."
The superhero game will launch simultaneously on the PC and Sony PlayStation 3 with the MSRP of US$49.99 and US$59.99 respectively. Purchase of the game grants one month free, after which a subscription costs US$14.99 monthly. PC customers will be able to take advantage of a US$29.99 StationAccess subscription which allows access to all current SOE games.
Don't miss our launch-announcement interview with the DCUO creators coming soon!

Needs more attention on the PS3, IMO. Although there was a patch yesterday or the day prior, which hopefully addresses some issues there. It's fun game, but moreso on the console then it would be on the PC, I think, seeing as how action-oriented it is.

I wonder what SOE considered as a issue by releasing in end of February.
People claim its bugged still. And SOE is identified as the company that releases prematurely.
I admit - I pre-ordered and didn't get a beta invite. But I can wait for Jan 11th. The only thing is that if the game is not polished SEO is NOT getting a 2nd chance - and I will move along to the next thing. Most will do the same.
Can they afford it? ... especially when most also consider their content ATM to be lacking (e.g. power set variety).

While fairly polished in some areas, graphics are pretty and it has never crashed for me (PC), in others the game is simply god aweful in its current state. UI is the worse I've ever touched, voice acting is very incomplete with missing or annoying looped files, content is extremely limited with endgame a hit or miss matter with players and PVP is just a mess at the momment.
I seriously have to wonder if they can fix all the major issues in such a limited ammount of time, let alone the stylistic or quality of play issues that people have touched upon. Good luck SOE, you'll need it.

Having dealt with SOE on a professional level in the past, I have to say that based on my experience, with less than a month to launch they will not be able to get those things fixed. It will be a buggy launch with dozens of patches for both PC and PS3 version over the first two months of the game.
I am in the PS3 beta right now and I have to say that the game play feels like Champions Online (I use a 360 controller to play CO) with a worse control scheme. The only thing that DCUO has over CO for me is open world PvP.

So it's business as usual for SOE then? Very polished on the technical/back-end side of things, but a neglected chaotic mess that will need tons of patching and probably some complete code rewrites on the gameplay side of things.
I really wish SOE would play to their strengths and focus on publishing and providing technical assistance to independent teams (like they do for Pirates of the Burning Sea) - because I'm tired of their in-house teams pushing out MMOs with broken and poorly thought out gameplay.
I guess I'll give DCUO a wide berth for a few years until SOE have redesigned the combat system a few times, worked through their usual gameplay glitches and added more content. Hope DCUO lasts that long - might be fun by then.

@Utakata Yes, I was referring to the announced premature launch date. I was hoping they would wait till the end of March. The game has a fairly decent bare bones foundation now, but it honestly needs another good 6 months AT LEAST in my opinion. It just doesn't have enough content or fluff at this point.

Can you tell us the costs for countries other than the US?

@Screwie
unlikely anyone could confirm that yet. The actual game will be affected by the distributors/retailers all wanting their cut in the different countries, for example when STO came out in Australia, it worked out a lot cheaper (taking into account exchange rates, was about 60% cheaper) to buy the box in the USA and have it shipped over through something like Amazon than to pop down the store and buy it.

I have been having a great time Beta testing this game. I would have to say I'm pretty impressed, this to me is the best SOE game I've played since EQ.
It plays well for an Action MMO on the PS3, I think the lack of memory is the biggest hit for the console version of this game, but does quite well for it's limitations.
This game owns in the Superhero MMO genre.
With more and more ppl playing the Beta, hopefully more positive feedback can help the developers polish and tweak the game more. I would if I was the Pub/Developer would push this game back even more to early Spring 2011.
I have a feeling that more ppl will purchase the console version over the PC version, but if they ever get a hold of the PC version and give it a play, I"m pretty sure there's going to be a lot of unhappy players, because the quality/performance is on a whole other level.
I'm lucky enough to be playing both PC and PS3 versions of the game, so of course, I know what version I'm picking. It's still great to see PS3 getting some MMO action.

I always find that promo funny, has the three hero mentors but only two of the villains and catwoman, granted she is more recognised than Circe...just always comes off as funny to me.

If it was free, I woulda messed with it. Based on the beta there's no way it's worth 15 bucks a month.

Still needs a lot more work IMO. A lot of power sets are missing and not likely to be added till well after launch; things like an Electricity set, Light manipulation and so forth. Many of the existing powers don't seem to fit well either; the logic behind giving a fire-melee focused character ranged fireball attacks is a bit odd of course. A lot of the powers are like that though, they give a flavor to your base attacks and then everyone gets the exact same power progression, with certain mandatory steps.
Creating a character themed after an iconic DC hero or villain can be quite hard thus. Want to make a Flash-based Speedster? Hope you like throwing fireballs as your enemies!
The movement modes themselves are great, as is the base gameplay mechanics. Not fond of the combo system much, but really unhappy with how the power system ended up getting implemented. Not very fun.
If you have doubts about DCUO, wait till a friend tries it or there is a demo or something before you buy.

SoE had said months ago, several times in fact, that the Electric & Light Manipulation (Green Lantern) powersets would be implemented at a later time.
I honestly don't see the issue with a "Fireball given to a Melee-Fire based Character" argument. I have'nt played, but watched and read (VERY extensively) and am pretty sure you can only have a certain number of attacks on your Hotbar(s) (Similar to Guild Wars), Im sure at some point you can remove or just not use said move / ability until a wanted replacement is aquired. I mean, again, from THAT logic, its not that big of a deal, you, having played, probably have more notorious examples, but that single one is'nt really major. At all.
Again, in EVERY new MMO, there will be minor issues overlooked, we all know this, especially being members to a website dedicated to the genre. Missed missions, NPCs that don't work / interact correctly, UI issues, etc.
Im sure there'll be a few in DCUO, but I HIGHLY doubt were talking FFXIV levels of fail here.

That's one thing should be pointed out...is that I think the game is designed to be expanded on power sets, character creation, story line, endgame content, and everything else. And hoping with a budget far better then Champions Online...we may see actaul real content done at an expedient and quality manner...
...my only concern is that will this done CoX style with mostly free Issues...or an evil micro-transaction system, which would mostly be game breaking for me.
