The first of two major updates for Final Fantasy XIV in the month of December will be going live tomorrow, according to the official word from Square-Enix. That's good news for the game's players, who have been looking forward to the previewed notorious monsters ever since the first of several teasers was made public. But that's not the only thing that players can expect, with the promise of another update later in the month bringing even further improvements to the game's mechanics and the market system.
Among the more significant features that have not been previewed in detail are the addition of more guildleves and recipes for crafting, as well as another free retainer slot that will serve to boost inventory and marketing capacities significantly. The update is also scheduled to contain more UI improvements, including an increase on the maximum allowed input in the chat box (which is currently rather myopic). Further details on the second December update are promised for a later date, but this update alone should be a fine tiding for Final Fantasy XIV players the world over.

Cool. Check you out in March XIV and we'll see where we go from there.

A step in the right direction, but not enough to convince me to log in. Still though I'm impressed that they have admitted the game isn't good enough yet (their words), and that they have put sub fees on hold. I'm watching FFXIV hopefully it turns around.

I don't know why people keep saying it's "impressive" that they admitted the game sucks. It's like admitting the sky is blue.

'was' refers to 'first', so yes, it's correct.

Simply read it out aloud, go on I dare instead of defending it for the sake of defending it,
...ever since the first of several teasers was made public.

Or would you like me to explain it,? I can do so but you might as well just look it up.
While you do that can you fix the fact that I spent hard earned money on a broken game that everyone but you and Eliot and some really die hard fans seem intent on defending in the face of everyone and the the company who made the game. We could get a fund together, you could pay me to shut up and you can go have a night job in FFXIV.
I want my money back, not going to happen. I want an internet opinion site to not have a biased mouth piece. Maybe that could happen?

Yes, rah, rah, rah. Still a horrible game I am ashamed to admit I paid for on your advice.

@Lost Bookshop. That's why you need to think for yourself and look on multiple sites for information if you plan on buying a game.
Joystiq gets payed off, so why wouldn't this site be payed off too?
I did my research and knew the game was gonna suck before I bought it, but I saw an unboxing video and impulsively bought it for the awesome CE box (It now sits on my big fancy PC).
I also thought they will eventually make the game better, and still do.

I'm excited. Changes sound great, and now I'll get to sell even more fish with another hired help.

Does anyone know how many players they have at this point? I'm always curious at the numbers.

Not really. It's not your fault that the sky is blue, and neither is it a bad, shameful thing to admit.
It isn't easy for people to admit their mistakes. At least no other MMO has done it so eloquently, and with actual consequences (free playtime).
You can say the game sucks all you want, but they have done nothing but the right things for the past two months. That should count for something.

It may count for something but for most people it will not be enough. Fans of the franchise, I suspect, are the only ones easy to forgive mistakes of the past, but the simple truth is that they have known the terrible state the game was in since beta. Devs chose to ignore, let alone communicate with the betatesting community, and despite cries of desperation that the game was nowhere near polished enough for release, knowing this full well Square Enix decided to push it out of the gate 2 months before the big C to capitalize on impulse purchases from brand recognition and fans of the franchise alone.
Other MMOs may not have admitted their mistakes so openly, but lets be honest here - even at its worst state, nothing comes close to the colossal blunder that was made with FFXIV. We will see if future patches will address the issues that plague the game, but as one reviewer said, "Fun" isnt something you can just patch into a game, and that is what it is missing most at the moment.

@Betel Customer service-wise, yes they have done the right things but design-wise they've failed miserably and that is why people got laid off. No reason to sugar coat what happened.

Definitely. The only way to really make up for the failure is to fix the game and make it good. However, this will take time and while they're making progress, it will take even longer. For the time being, they can not do more than they already have. The future of the game is looking grim, but it could be a lot worse too.
It is also sad to see a single person's mistake is being reflected for the whole team. One person decided the budget, as well as the schedules. And he has resigned from his position.
One thing is for sure- mediocre is not enough. They need to impress us with something substantial, and I hope the new producer will deliver.
