It probably comes as no surprise that I really liked reading this article. It is great to see the arguements laid out in some more detail since there was alot SO much more going on in this case then people simply whining about losing the ability to "gank" low levels.

Also admit that I got a tiny chuckle at people calling you a fanboy, or saying this piece was PvP whining. There is no way to win, is there?

I can assure you AoC's loyal subscribers thank you for your genuine insight, Jeff. Especially from the Acolyte guild on Cimmeria.

Not only was this an unannounced patch, it was blatantly left undocumented from AoC's Patcher notes as well.

Really Jeff, your article comes accross as a whiney one, sorry fella, but thats the tone that I picked up. I don't play PvP and have allways held off on trying it due to the whole culture of ganking, so i see the change as a posative one. Though as a PvE player i would in all honesty prefer to see funcom spending time on fixing things like crafting and quest based loot drops customised for each class as opposed to spending time on PvP which I care little for, but then I am addmittably biased.

@Bezza

The funny thing is I'm not a big PvP fan either. I've called for crafting revamps, appearance slots, and PvE/fluff items more times than I care to remember over the course of this column.

PvP was really tangential to my overall point, which was the fact that developers can and do pull the rug out from under players with regularity in this genre. Whether it's due to an honest mistake as Morrison said above or some other reason, it's pretty uncalled for and should be avoided at all costs imo.

If that's whining, so be it, lol.

Oh i get your point Jef, dont get me wrong, I am all for transparancy in relation to development and updates, in my experiance though, transparancy doesn't prevent devs from doing whatever they want anyway. Take cryptic as a point for said argument. I do enjoy reading your articles and appreciate you take the time to respond to comments. But given that the change was already slated to be brought onto live servers in a few weeks anyway it just doesnt seem such a big deal to me and as i stated, i am bias.

Perhaps my somwhat apathetic attitude stems from my shellshock at the ranger nerf not so long ago. But it seems to me the devs will do what they do and we have no choice but to suck it up or go play elsewhere.

A famous man once said "Stupid is as Stupid does" or you are what you do. What are the thought processes of the devs behind this game? Are they enjoying a tax break in their country due to its failure? A shelter? Or is there some darker reason.....an owner or controlling aspect that likes puinshment, or even worse, thinks they are doing the "right thing"?

Like any game in a coma we will never know the why of whats going on unless somebody on that dev team wakes up and tells us.

Time to move on, Jef.

From AoC if you're no longer able to enjoy it, and from Massively if you're going to "stealth" your political opinions into a gaming column. They have no place there.

A very sub-standard piece.

- I agree, a distasteful blog that should not have been posted.
Antisocial behavior displayed by this blogger in article and comments show complete lack of professionalism. I don't blame him but I do hold Shawn Schuster, Editor-in-chief accountable for enabling "stealthy political opinions into this gaming column."

Personally a better us of our times is to rather just write to AOL Technology Network or AOL CEO Tim Armstrong instead.
Even clowns shouldn't get away with everything.

I don't give a rat's patootie what anyone's politics is, but writers on MMO websites need to stay the hell away from politics. Editorial or not, if it doesn't address something political to do with the gaming industry, just stay away.

Politics- especially U.S. politics these days- is as poisonous as they come and discussion of same is nothing but divisive in any forum.

So, the problem with this is that PvP OUTSIDE of Tortage sucked.

Unless you're level 80 and have top flight PvP gear you can't hang. And PvP before 80 is a joke. The developers have constantly said "We only balance PvP for level 80" which means if you're not a Ranger you're not going to enjoy the PvP ride to max.

It was only at the level 15 to 20 range that PvP was even fun. It was actually kind of balanced. 3 on 3 pickup battles around rez points were great fun. And before anyone gets pissy, no I wasn't a level 25 blue ganker. I only went to White Sands to do quests and when I was done I left unless I could get into a few scrapes. While sands PvP did have it's share of gankers but out of all the nights I played on White Sands I only had a hand full of Ass Hats to deal with. The REAL ass hattery is in Cornwalls Valley where level 80's tromp through killing the little level 30 punks.

Which brings up another point. If you want people to stop rage quitting the game how about enforcing your terms of service. It's now perfectly legal for some one to KILL you while you're talking to a quest giver. Even though you get NO indication that you're being attacked. I love how Morrison comes on here to defend this decision when they do absoloutely stupid shit like that in game.

Anyway, I could totally support this change if the 26 - 79 PvP game was half way balanced or fun. Then I wouldn't care. But, as is, this change kills the enjoyment of PvP for me.

And I'm not the only one that's unhappy. Really, Craig, you guys currently have a dead game because of your stupid decisions and this is just another one. Prove me wrong, I dare ya.

@Checksix

Agreed, Tortage PvP was the only fun PvP in the game for me. I just got a demo to 80, queued for a few minis, and was summarily annihilated. Maybe this changes after six months of PUG raids or faction gear grinding, but by that time I'll be on to another class.

The beauty of Tortage PvP was that everyone was basically equal (it takes about 5 hours, if that, to level a character from nothing to 20). If the whole of the island had been a gank fest I would've been more amenable to this change, but it was two zones, and you had to look for the PvP, at least on Cimmeria. People that are acting as though they weren't able to quest are simply not being truthful.

@Jef Reahard then ask him for level capped pvp zones. Don't need to make them in the newbie areas, just make separate ones. This way everyone wins-newbies get no ganks, and vets can do more balanced PvP.

Oh my.. are people really arguing about a remark which you can hear everyday if you ever bothering listening to anyone?

And IMHO: PvP in all lvl based games should be level locked.

I couldn't get certain quests done in White Sands because of getting ganked consistently in White Sands. I am for some kind of change, whether its level capped White Sands instances or no pvp there.

The best part of the people on the PVP servers in AOC are the griefers that absolutely pound others into the ground. Spawn campers, Rangers using tracking, level 80's killing level 25's and other doing general jackassery are the ones that QQ on the boards and here as well about "Tyranny is dead! No one is left on the PVP servers! Take the guards out of the cities!." I actively play this game on Wicanna (a PVE server) and enjoy the minigames almost daily. Come over if you want to experience a functioning server. If you want open world PVP, go to the open PVP area and grief each other to your hearts content. The PVP'ers did this to themselves by making others just utterly want to rage quit this game. On the other hand, this update was a bad move. It's an easy fix though. Just add another open type area for PVP to the lowbie zone or just roll the update completely back Craig. For every good thing that you do, it seems that there are two "huh?" things that you sneak in. Easy fixes to this game man. Easy fixes.

I left AoC a few months ago, due to the expansion made the game like a true grind-fest.

Also, i was playing in a PVE Server for a few months due to the PVP Servers were dead or guild unballanced.

Off all the time i spent in game, i can say the most fun i had in PVP was in White Sands, even after they putted guards in the beach... you could go there and relax for some minutes fighting others.

PVE'rs in those days, could just switch instance or log later, and complete all the quests then, thats what i did with all my toons and i never left a WS/tU quest undone.

So at my point of view i simply cant understand why all these PVP unfrendly updates (from Bori to now) where launched at all.
