"So our key theme for the new character creator is that the player was to feel that he personally, single-handedly, through his decisions and skill created a hyper-realistic human representation of his character in-game," Torfi Frans Ólafsson, creative director of EVE Online, explained to Gamasutra in a developer diary describing the intent of the new character creator in the Incursion expansion. EVE Online is breaking new ground by giving players the ability to create "hyper-realistic and yet slightly exaggerated and cinematic" characters, as Art Director Ásgeir Jon Ásgeirsson says.
As fans of the industry, we are excited by the insight into what exactly goes on behind the scenes of our favorite games. This developer diary gave the artists of CCP a chance to let us know what they thought of the process and the outcome of the latest innovation to EVE. Art Manager Benjamin Bohn says they were looking for an "all-or-nothing quality level" and, it "was obvious that this was going to involve sweat and blood." However, the end results would leave both the players and CCP employees in awe.
To get more insight into the vision and actual work involved in rebuilding the character creation system from the ground up, be sure to catch the whole developer diary. And for those already playing, the next part of Incursion hits December 14th!

Yeah its an awesome character creator, but nothing they come up with now will make us forgive them for how long we had to wait for incarna...
unless a certain amount of latex is involved...we'll see...

I've played EVE off and on for years. Whether or not I'm actively playing, CCP is the only developer out there that I consistently support by investing in their product. Where other developers are content to simply re-face their games or add new content based on the old mechanics, CCP genuinely pushes the boundaries of the genre in various ways. They pioneered offline progression in the form of skills training, they demonstrate their respect for the thoughts of their players through the CSM, they consistently change their mechanics when it's called for, they release free expansions every six months... they've done more than that.
This character creator is just another example of how CCP is different than any other developer in that it demonstrates CCP are willing to take the time and risk the expense (and perhaps the impatience of some of their players) to release the best character creator they can. I, for one, believe that CCP could not have created and released this creator at any other time. The technology to support it just wasn't where it needed to be.
Call be an EVE fanboy.

Can't wait for them to release this.
I'm an on and off EVE player and roleplayer. What I've missed is a representation of me that's more than just a (not very impressive) head in a box.
When this is released, it's one step closer to CCP's goal of making the best space game ever. Incarna will be another big leap.
Now if they only could make space combat fun...

@zgomot Settings your distance and circleing your NPC enemies while firing away until they die, atleast to me has never been fun.
I hope CCP will make reality of their (old?) dream to make space flight and combat more twitchy and less clicky. Then EVE would really be the best space game ever.

Never, I hope.
EVE is a perfect tactical simulator right now - making the combat twitchier would be disaster - just imagine how controlling a fleet of barrel rolling iditos would be? Even with the rather simplified command scheme *someone* always manages to bump the damn titan!
