En Masse Entertainment and Bluehole Studio have made action combat the focus of TERA's marketing campaign, and for the most part, that's all we've heard about over the past several months (well, that and how much some people are turned off by bikini armor).
At long last, a bit of information about TERA's crafting and gathering mechanics (yes it has them!) has surfaced. The news takes the form of a player-written guide over at TERAfans, and it features a run-down on resources, professions, and raw materials. As it turns out, players can opt to pursue alchemy, armor and weaponsmithing, carpentry, or tailoring and leatherworking professions.
The article also features two in-game videos showing the mechanics in action. Jump the cut for some footage of a player gathering ore and crystal as well as the crafting of a low-level staff. Keep in mind that this info hails from the Korean beta client and so is subject to change.

Wow...is that Tera or Aion? Either way...it looks boring and not westernized at all. I'm talking about the atmosphere not the crafting. The sound effects alone make it too "eastern".

@Braiks
Umm...what? I wasn't talking about the language on screen. ROFL. I was talking about how this game is being touted as being "westernized" for the audience of the west and based on the game graphics and sound and atmosphere, as well as the mechanics, I seriously question their definition of "westernized".

@(Unverified) Westernization meaning changing things that are fundamentally gamebreaking for the western audiences. This mostly meaning grind, rng, lack of PvE endgame, and story. Not visuals. Although honestly, there are a lot of western influences in the human and amani race character/city design and architecture.
Also, what Braiks meant was that this is the korean client without any westernization (like was mentioned in the article by Massively). There will be two different clients with different changes because westerners and koreans like different things in their MMOs.

@(Unverified) Here's the thing. These videos are from the Korean CBT4 and, as such, are on the Korean client. You can't complain about the game's Westernization based off the Korean client because that's not ours. There will be differences between the Korean version and the NA/EU versions on more than just the grind. En Masse stated a while ago that crafting for the Western version will be a "one-click process" instead of the way it is right now in the Korean version. Except the two clients to be fairly different from one another.
If you seriously have discontent with this game than either go and post constructive criticism on the official TERA forums or just don't play the game.

That's right! That's how you get the most customers, AND the biggest return on your investment!
"just don't play the game" ... It's the recipe for success!

Finally, an MMO in which male characters don't look like complete dorks when they run!

Boooooring. I'm fed up with all these loveless mmos. The gathering and crafting looks just like Ayawn's.

@Grendel Actually, gathering looks exactly like WoWs. There's no fail bar. You can fail gathering if you are too underleveled for it, but it doesnt deplete the node like in aion. You just do it over again.
There are different grades of materials like in aion, but what you get is based on your profession skill level and not the lottery.
Crafting in this video is multitiered (you need to craft lots of little parts to craft other parts to eventually craft the item) and has a chance of failure, BUT Western TERA's crafting was said to be a one step process like WoW's and they're considering a 100% success rate (but with significantly more mat requirements).
Definitely not revolutionary, but it's solid.

So, are the nodes randomly placed? Are they REALLY random, or just "one of these 5 locations in this visible area" kind of random? If they're not really random, hello bot harvesters! Glad you could make it back!
Do harvested goods sell for anything to an NPC? If so, hello bot harvesters! Glad you could make it back!
Can the harvest time be reduced from 5 seconds to less than 5 seconds, via any mechanism? Not that 5 seconds isn't fun and all, but after doing it ten THOUSAND times, I think maybe reducing that time might be a good thing.
Do you ever get more than one result from a single harvest? Do you get multiple harvests per node? Can the player increase that with specialization choices, gear, or similar?
Does the avatar really need to go through the emotional equivalent of a death in the family or winning the lottery, just for harvesting? Seems a bit over the top.
And finally, why does the camera position reset at the end of every harvest? Not a single dev or tester up to this point felt that was annoying enough to fix?

The crafting looks the same as aion, down to buying mats from a merchant and using a static crafting table. The inventory looks the same as aion's cube. The money looks EXACTLY the same as Aion's kinah. The crafting stores seem to be in a layout like in Aion's main cities.
This really is worrying me.

@Somnicide Really? BH/EM has confirmed, 100% for certain, that the western client will have different art assets, including models, icons, textures, UI elements, and sound?
I haven't seen that information in any interview, posting, or on the official site since public information has been made available...

@Somnicide Ok, so how, precisely, will it be "very different" if not one of:
models
icons
textures
UI elements
sound
You only have to pick one. Any one, or throw a different one out there, any aspect of the user interface experience that they see or hear.
You only have to commit to one. C'mon, it'll be easy.
