As we approach the end of 2010 (yes, already), we look back at not only an interesting year for MMOs, but also an amazing decade for such a young genre. We've had our highs and lows since last year's awards, including the now-hilarious choice of APB as Most Anticipated for 2010 by the Massively staff.
This year we have a new survey format, new categories and new nominees. We also have a new title, changing it from Reader's Choice to Player's Choice, to reflect the fact that you don't necessarily need to be a Massively reader to vote. This is our biggest award poll yet, so we want to make it count. If you want to see your favorite game win, shout it from the mountain tops -- or just post a link in your favorite game's forums.
Read on for more details on the surveys and links to the surveys themselves.
In addition to a normal end-of-the-year poll, we also have one for the end of the decade. In this case, we're defining the decade as the time period between January 2001 and December 2010.
The nominees for each category were chosen based on votes by the Massively staff, so you may not see every possibility listed. We also decided to cap them off at 10, otherwise some categories would have hundreds of nominees. For example, in the Best Expansion of the Decade category, you will not see every single expansion released in the last 10 years. Please keep this in mind before asking in the comments why your favorite game isn't listed.
You'll notice we listened to your feedback on last year's awards and implemented a few new features, including a new voting platform and a "None of the Above" option. Also, the answers in each category are randomized, to prevent voters simply going down the line and voting for the first option listed in each one.
Both surveys will close at 12:00 a.m. EST on January 1st, 2011 and all results will be posted during the first week of January, 2011. We'll also have our own Massively Staff Choice Awards soon after, where we'll give you our own opinions on what we felt was the best and worst of 2010. Good luck to all nominees!

Pretty lame of you not to include FFXI under any of the best of decade categories (which it would win community hands down, regardless of how you feel about the game) considering its held more subscribers the past 10 years than anything else on the list except for WoW.
I'd suggest it being an oversight.. except you for some reason included Square in the studio polls.

@Celeras. I was thinking the same exact thing.
I'm not sure how they could have forgotten Final Fantasy XI, It's been one of the big MMO's for a long time.
-
Not sure why they would add anything from Guild Wars 1 to the list since Guild Wars 1 is not even an MMO.

Reading the survey makes me sad at how... well... sad 2010 was for the MMO genre.

I clicked "None of the above" for well over half of them. =\ It was a pretty poor year for jut about every MMO except for WoW and a few betas that won't even be included in the poll.

Me too. I thought it was just me being jaded.
I don't feel any particular dislike towards any of the entries (save APB, which was a crushing disappointment). Some of this year's releases I enjoy enough to maintain a subscription to.
I don't think any of them were great, though. I vote for "greats" not "goods."

Maybe I'm approaching my gaming all wrong, but how can anyone possibly experience all of these MMOs enough to accurately compare them against one another?

I found filling out the 2010 survey to be rather tough; absolutely no new release grabbed my fancy this year, the bigger launches were dire disappointments, and the smaller ones were crummy/of no interest.

I wish the decade poll was more elaborate, how often do you get to conduct those? Don't answer that, don't crush my dreams...
Anyway, 2010 was not nearly as bad as 2009, and next year is going to be even better. Although im often disappointed by choices other people make, i cant wait to see the results. At least for the biggest disappointment poll. :)

it's gonna be interesting to see if cata will be voted the best expansion...considering that it hasn't been released yet.

Well i would consider "The Shattering" as part of the expansion , or at least an "content update" to be considered "expansion worthy" . I'm sure most WoW players have experienced this by now.
Hell the Shattering probably more content changes than most paid expansions in other MMOs....

Why did you have to remind me about The Secret World?
Now I'm once again acutely aware of the fact that it's not out yet.

FFXI needs representation in the best of the decade. It's terrible that only SE is listed, and only for the worst company. Way to play off everyone rage hating on FFXIV. FFXI's community is by far one of the best and FFXI is still a solid game even after 8 years!

I definitely hope this isn't going to turn out like last year... That was kind of ridiculous.

"Beyond 2012" there are games like Black Prophecy and some others didn't expect them to be in that category, I must be behind the news :(
