No real opinion here, but I got to thinking about the Elder Scrolls series' elves and now I want to play Morrowind again.

Curse you, Massively!

@Eamil

I dreamt about Morrowind last night. God, that game was good.

To Seyda Neen!

I enjoy Bethesda's newer games but I miss the sheer amount of background information you could get out of dialogue when the amount of dialogue wasn't limited by voice acting.

I don't like the elf stereotypes like the entire race is tree-hugging druids or magical attuned creatures, but I don't have a problem with using elven appearance traits on stuff you normally don't expect to see elf-like stuff. A good example is the Vulcan race in Star Trek: This race have several appearance traits you normally connect to elves, but you don't really expect to see elves as an alien race in a sci-fi universe.

Reading the above comments, I agree that the only elves I find acceptable are the ones in Elder Scrolls because they're more realistic. They have flaws just like everybody else...

Other than that, elves are a blight on the land. Their I'm-better-than-you-because-I'm-purple-I'm-old-I'm-hackneyed-and-I-think-I'm-better-than-you-because-I've-got-a-ponytail-and-I'm-a-pseudo-intellectual-spouting-poetry-in-coffeeshops-and-drinking-$20-lattes (that last part is how I imagine "elves" in modern day society acting) gets old REAL quick. They need to be eliminated on sight.

@Ocho I like Elder Scrolls elves for the same reason, plus the fact that they manage to avoid stereotyping elves. Morrowind has so much cultural diversity even though it's the Dark Elf homeland, and in Oblivion elves in the human territory were still pretty much just regular people with pointy ears.

Elves in MMOs don't bother me but they tend to be one-dimensional. I'm interested in seeing what GW2 does with the Sylvari, though, since they're sort of an exact opposite of stereotypical elves - the youngest race, rather than the oldest.

@Eamil I completely agree. It becomes more realistic when elves are shown to be a race that is just like everybody else, with their own vices and the only differences comes mostly cosmetic and a slight variance on personality.

And I don't think I'd mind playing Sylvari as the only similarity they'd have to elves is in looks. Otherwise, you're right, they're the newest and youngest race, and if the character in the first GW novel is any indication, they'd be more curious and naive instead of arrogant and reclusive. But then again, everything about GW2 looks good to me right now. :)

Only Tolkien elves get a free pass, because the whole made up language thing of Quenya and Sindarin is geeky professorial cool, and he was pretty much the first to link elves with the pale, fair, slender, and noble stereotype. The beauty of it is, he remembered one of the rules of narrative, ie. checks and balances, strengths and weaknesses. Uber as they are, Tolkien elves are a dying people, a dying culture, fading, never to return, and the loss of their grace to a world is part of that noble tragedy.

As for other copycats who grab the good bits and handily forget the bad bits... *sighs*

I enjoy the elves in universes that twist away from stereotype.

Dark Sun's elves are nifty - nomad rogues so far fallen from the noble tree that they would laugh at you for suggesting it, then pick your pocket and rob you blind.

I also like Warhammer 40K's eldar - far future elves which have evolved about three different cultures (enigmatic supposed "good", just plain enigmatic and nomadic primitive, completely freaky sadistic). The interesting break from stereotype is that they are in no way benevolently allied with humans, who can barely tell them apart and tend to hate them all for good measure in a charmingly xenophobic universe.

As for fantasy elves (including Warhammer Fantasy), ugh. Ugh ugh. Enough of the white-robed blond haired pointy ears already.

I worked with an elf once. He was arrogant, lazy and had an air of self entitlement about him.

Now dwarves on the other hand are a hardworking people. Not afraid to get their hands dirty and help out, even unasked. A very down to earth people.

Generally pro-elf, although the elves in LotRO are so terrifyingly androgynous and smug-looking that I can understand your aversion.
