If there's one MMO on the horizon that has everyone excited, it's Rift. Created by Trion Worlds, Rift promises to be the next big AAA launch title and has been drawing its share of attention from players. The game's closed beta begins tomorrow, and Trion has been giving out beta keys in preparation. Some Rift fans were able to grab limited beta keys that give access to several beta events, while others were lucky enough to secure an access-all-areas VIP beta key. Here at Massively, our 500 VIP keys disappeared in record time. For those of you who missed the chance to get in on the Rift beta, you can still sign up at the Rift website for a chance to get in.
Rift is being marketed as a fully complete, next-gen MMO. But those are just marketing buzzwords, right? Guess again! In this new video (after the cut below), the Trion team has taken the bold step of defining what exactly those terms mean in a very practical context. Rift is promised to be a highly polished MMO right from launch, with none of those rough edges we've come to expect from new titles. Rather than follow the standard MMO formula wherein monsters are forever bound to respawn and walk around within a small area, Rift aims to create a truly dynamic game world.
The demonic rifts that open randomly in the world will radically alter not just the look of the land but also the gameplay of nearby areas. Leave a rift unchecked for too long and you'll soon find they've set up camp and organised an invasion of the local area. If this new video doesn't make you excited for Rift and the future potential of the MMO genre, I don't know what will.
Skip past the cut to watch the new Rift beta video in full HD.

I have a Beta Key and can't participate because my computer that is able to run the game is in the repair shop.
Damn this cruel joke played by destiny!!!! I was so eager to play this game.

Really looking forward to jumping in tomorrow to see for myself. That said, it's pretty sad that complete and polished at launch is now something extraordinary that needs to be advertised.

Good lord if they can live up to the hype....
I am really looking forward to the potential of a game that's not a themepark- that's alive and breathing. I got in the weekend BETA and am going to download it tonight for this weekend. Wish it was longer but at least I'll get a glimpse of if this is really going to be the game they've promised. If so, for me anyway... forget all the rest.

@arathil Game is still a themepark, just one with a lot more variation. I can't tell you how much more of a difference it is between this game and WoW, when in Rift, you actually WANT to protect your questhub, since the 'land control' isn't static.
I know at Level 50 I'll be still patrolling Silverwood righting wrongs, ha.

Can't wait to try this out tomorrow. This has been on my list of anticipated mmogs along with Guild Wars 2 and The Old Republic. I am really curious how exactly the whole rifts dynamics system plays out and what impact events/characters make on the world.

@misterorff At exactly that point, I made a rather excited and undignified squeal. Teleporting snipers sounds awesome :D

Well that video got me excited for Rift, unfortunately even though I got into the beta my computer can't run it (Crying). If the game can live up to the hype and what that video just presented this could be an amazing game, one that I would be willing to pay $15 a month to play. To everyone that got into the beta I hope you enjoy your time.
-Time for me to go look for a laptop.

The skill tree/soul tree system is the thing in mmos I have been searching for. Been with countless mmos and f2p mmos with skill trees and they suck.
Gonna be a fun weekend!

Well, there are many beta events, each spanning a different amount of time (for example, the first one begins tomorrow and lasts through the weekend, off the top of my head). Before the events, they send out emails to the players who have been selected to partake in the specific event, and in those emails you can find all the info you need to play. Accounts can either have no key, have a beta key, or have a VIP beta key. A beta key increases your chances to get into the beta events, while a VIP key grants you access to all events. Thing is, loads of people have beta keys, and there are quite a lot of people with VIP keys as well, so there's a good chance you won't be invited as soon as you'd like. A player with a beta key may be invited for all the events, but they may never be invited, it's all based on luck and performance during the beta I guess.

A lot of fluffy, meaningless talk that i've heard before countless times.
I've built up a pretty good resistance to MMO marketing over the years. I know how these things work.
I'll believe it when I see it.
