Always remember that to be a hero you must be an orphan. No true heroes have stable families. To be a hero, you must have lost your family in some horrific event.

It also helps if you have been terribly wronged in some manner in the past, have serious episodes of angst and broody depression in the present, and are seeking revenge/justice/vengeance in the future.

Or just use a random page in TVtropes for ideas.

I loved writing bios in both CoH and CO.

Writing a bio was such a great way to define a character and allowed me, the player, to understand what motivated them. I often thought a really good bio should be peppered with lots of RP jumping off points, for both you and other players to mine.

I also struggled with the word count. Its hard not to get carried away and start writing a novel. Probably a good thing there was a limit in both games.

Here's a question: I noticed you had suggested that you keep to your in-game abilities when expressing your character's strengths/weaknesses in a roleplaying scenario. How would you go about avoiding the "godmodding" chant if your character is indeed more than a little extraordinary mechanically?

I mean...I have a build that puts the vast majority of others to shame.

And obviously oodles of humility, too!

nice article.

I get a lot of compliments on my bios in CoH and CO. Sometimes I have stories written and rewritten many times that deserve praise, other times I have really ridiculous stuff like...
I have a character that shoots metal spikes from her body. I wonder how hard it would be to date if you had that power...so I wrote her dating ad inlcuding a lot of references to places she likes to hang out in Paragon City.
I have a character named after a city in CoX, lacking any creative inspiration I wrote that she got the name because the press reported that she had "Welcome to Croatoa" tattooed above her private. That was based on a very bad first date. And no...i didn't.
