This is making me think about giving DF another try. Played it for the 1st 3 or 4 months after release & found the clan I was part of had dissolved while I was on holiday. Sort of drifted away after that, but think I may need to give it another gander now, really loved the game.

Jef- you've made a very good argument for a game I had already easily dismissed. It sounds like you're having a lot of fun. The PvP element actually sounds as though it's helping to foster social interaction rather than hinder it. Good reading!

The community is cool, for sure. There are plenty of bad apples (while we're not sugarcoating) but what game doesn't have oddballs?

Good read! I never joined a clan in all my times in the game -- I really should. I saw the NEW people, maybe now I'll give 'em a holler.

You know, this is the first thing I've ever read about Darkfall that's made me think that, even though I probably won't LOVE it, there are some attractive aspects and I ought to give it a try.

I think when I finish up my month playing LEGO Universe (Must. Find. More. LEGO pieces), I'm going to try this one out. I'm an EVE player living in lowsec, so watching my back is nothing new. It does seem a bit annoying that there are *no* safe places, but I'll adapt.

Its weird reading the perspective of a newer player. A lot changes as you become more accustomed to the game. But i think its great you're having a good time.

DF is all about having the right perspective and attitude. A little patience and cunning and you'll be in love forever...

... or at least until you reach the high end magic grind and start to pull all your hair out with how much macro'ing u need to do. But offline skilling will fix all that...Rofl.

Having played it for quite a while, I think the article is quite on the rosy-glasses side of the street. I think I could only enjoy DFO with a large group of close friends thus limiting my interaction to the others to mere combat.

The game did evolve over time (of course, if that didn't happen, the game would sink fast after the catastrophic launch). It must be much more forgiving to the newbie, although I'm not sure this is a good thing.

When you play a game, you make (ideally) a conscious playerbase choice. DFO was right there at the bottom of the barrel when I played it. For this fact alone I am not enticed to ever resubscribe again.

The problem is not ganking, the problem is not full-loot. The problem is that, sadly, PvP games are prone to foster horrid communities (with EVE as a laudable exception, since that game's difficulty and learning curve weeds out most of the pew-pew kidz).

Don't even get me started on the "sandbox" aspect of the game...

I like this week moreso than last week Jef, very good read. This week's article is exactly the way soo many new players that I talk to see the game. The novelty and "new" feel of the game is starting to wear off and you are starting to look around at what's available to choose the type of playstyle you want to pursue. Character development is starting to become more work to achieve and split focus such as you are having right now further increases the apparent "grind".

I suggest to continue dabbling here and there, watch some PvP videos to see players who have fleshed out a certain path and see what you like. If you are a min-maxer you can find out the most effective methods to kill people and focus those(There's a few very common spells/skills used by most advanced characters). If not then you can see some of the high-end skills and abilities you can achieve and carve your own path based on what you like.

Personally I'm a diverse-type player and enjoy PvP, PvE, Crafting and socializing so I simply use whatever I want that works well for the task I am doing and is fun. This type of playstyle can be frustrating though because you must be patient as whenever I switch to try something new out it's not very strong as I probably haven't used it much and it's not very high level :).

Also talk to people on Ventrilo, talk to the councilors and ask tons and tons of questions! I was on the NEW vent last night and spent a good hour chatting with guys, answering questions about magic and skills, game mechanics, etc and was offering advice for players to help them choose which path to pursue next.

Glad your enjoying it, myself I never got to meet any of the nice people you talk about. I tried joining more than one guild and if not immediately laughed at, insulted, or killed I was usually ignored. I tried for over a month to find any reason to like that game. I guess my main problem was I started too long after release and before any "new recruit" pushes so the noobie areas I was in were mainly populated by griefers and their "decoys". A decoy is a low level alt that groups with you then leads you somewhere you can be more easily ganked. I have played allot of pvp games, this is the first one where more than one person went through so much effort to gank one low level with pretty much nothing to his name.

So counter to your experience, mine was like being a raiders fan in the cowboys locker room. Some of the lowest forms of life I have ever experienced in a game, and ive played WoW!

Although I like the danger of Open PvP worlds, I really dislike that developers continue to avoid building tools to create a sense of emulated law and morality.

In "real life" if your gang jumps a single person and kills them, you have to worry about a lot of problems. Random acts of immoral violence and a**hole behavior don't cut it outside the game world. Eventually you end up in prison or even executed.

Yet in games, there isn't really any justice system. Darkfall creates a world of "Lord of the Flies". I'd like to see a sandbox world where jerk players question themselves before killing some random player. Is the risk worth it? If they act, the law might come down on them. Perhaps it is... but it should be a weighty decision, not something you default to. As it stands, the default is kill everyone you run across.

That's not an MMO I want to play. I am interested in communities and the potential of MMOs. Now I love moral-less PVP, I just get my fix in games like Call of Duty - were things are a bit more balanced.

Someday maybe a developer will actually want to create an open world with danger and the tools to create and enforce moral laws (and ones that let the players decide on what they think is moral or not).

@Anatidae

That may be a little difficult to accomplish, since the sandbox/open-pvp player does not want game systems to dictate how they can behave. I know I don't, and I'm one of them.

The theory is "the community will police itself" and I've seen that work. It happened in AC Darktide and in Shadowbane both. Of course, it only *really* works when people are guilded. Before ganking you suddenly have to think "do I and my guild want to deal with the repercussions of this?"

There's more "ifs" and "then" to it, but I'm not going to bore everybody. =)
I think that aspect of community is the closest you're going to see to what you're asking for, and while I respect your opinion, I hope you don't get it. Guild contention creates drama, and in a PvP game drama = content.

@Anatidae there is justice though if you make justice (which you cannot do as much in other games if someone does you wrong like ninja loot). Everyone has only one character per account and the game is meant to be played long-term so you cannot just go around killing everyone without people remembering this. When I became a PK and started killing everyone, people stopped buying things from me in trade chat (even though I have never scammed anyone!!).

Nice read. As for your grinding I'd stick with melee but I'd try to use that rend in between melee chops. It'll go a long way. Don't forget to pick up witchcraft and work rend and needles in there. That also means while you're jumping around the city you can just debuff afks and level your witchcraft that way. I've gotten my alt to 40 greater magic and started the grind a week ago.

You are going to get kicked out of NEW though. They limit you to 30 days, so, the game will change by then. Maybe you should start looking for a regular guild and document your experiences then.

The parts about the community is something that I really miss from the early days of EQ. That part was very interesting. But the whole griefing and losing everything bit kills it for me right there. I am no longer a youngster with hours and hours to devote to each game I play. I have a few precious hours every week and I want to have FUN (notice the GAME part). Last think I want to do is spend my few hours having to deal with crap like this. Yeah I can log off or play an alt, etc.... BUT I don't have time to play alts and if the game forces me to have to make those choices then my choice is to play somewhere else.

Great write up!
I have had far more positive experiences with other players in this game than negative.
I only wish I had more time to play. Even though I can't log in that much these days and I don't have time to commit to a clan, I still have fun exploring, gathering resources while I do other work at my desk.
With an hour or two to play every other day or so, I hunt mobs with the occasional pvp thrown in there to spice things up a bit.
Playing solo is fun, but as I remember from my experience in NEW, playing in a clan adds a lot more to the game.
