Turbine may be the king of freemium themeparks these days, but once upon a time it actually developed sandbox MMORPGs. It did them so well, in fact, that even though once upon a time was 1999, Asheron's Call remains open for business to this day.
Not only that, but the title keeps rolling out the content updates, with the latest adding a new playable race (the Olthoi), a new magic school, a new hunting area, new quests, etc. That's a lot of new for an 11-year-old game, wouldn't you agree? Oh, and there's also the new luminance mechanic, designed for endgame folks above level 200 and meant to improve everything from critical hits to crafting.
Check out all the details at the official website, and hit up our new gallery below while you're at it.

The olthoi are a blast. They are PvP only (similar to monster play in LotRO but you can go to anywhere in the world instead of having to stay in one zone). There have been some huge player vs olthoi battles going on Darktide since the patch,
So far they've added Undead, Gearknights, Shadows and Empyreans as new playable races. Tumeroks and Lugians are coming next.
If you haven't tried AC in a while you should definetly hop back. The current team has been doing drastic improvements and additions in the game for a year straight and it is really paying off. The game is a blast to play all over again.
They also introduced a whole new school of magic called Void Magic this patch (it was shown off with a return of BZ but called Void of Bael'zharon the previous patch). It is focused more on DoT spells, debuffs and a new type of damage called nether. It is a really interesting combat skill.

First, I am surprised this game is still around; I thought it closed up shop long ago, especially when AC2 closed.
Second, there is a monthly subscription fee? I see "$9.99", but I don't see any details? Is that per month or an initial cost/investment followed by a cheaper fee? Is it cheaper if you buy more months or the same rate?
At least there is a 14 day trial...

It's been running for 11 years with a monthly fee and it's still going, don't see why they would change that now. If it works it works.
There is no initial cost. You can go straight from the trial into a monthly fee and do not need to buy the game or anything like that.
People are often surprised it is still around simple because they don't do any advertising for it (they never really did even back in its early years either). AC2 came and went and AC kept going and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
It is amazing how often someone comes back who played the game years ago and talks about how much fun they're having and that they haven't had fun like this in any other MMOs that they tried..

Oy, what a headache with the Update Vial! Four years of the same problem, and still no definitive answer.

Too bad all that depth of gameplay is hidden behind archaic controls and horrible movement options as well as all of the old school interaction with the world. If they could update those 2 things alone I would happily play this game everyone talks about. Ah well, maybe they will make an AC3?

I would come back to this game in a heartbeat if they would just update the movement controls to be more fluid and inline with today's control schemes.

You can configure the controls in game and change them to what you want them to be.
