Earthrise fans are waking up to an early Christmas present this morning in the form of a lengthy new closed beta gameplay video available on the official website. While developer Masthead Studios has provided a steady stream of screenshots (and even a few interviews) over the last several months, footage of the sandbox title in action has been extremely hard to come by.
No longer.
Thanks to the five minute clip, we now have a clearer picture of the game's UI as well as an idea of how the PvP and PvE plays out. The footage also shows off various locales around the world of Enterra including Arcology, Autonomy, the Blasted Region, the Borderland zones, and the Hatchery. "The Masthead team is thrilled to finally offer more of our fans a window into the Earthrise beta testing environment. Our developers have been working exhaustively to fine-tune all of the game's features to deliver a uniquely captivating gaming experience, and we are very anxious for all of our fans to see it," says producer Atanas Atanasov.
Check it out at the official Masthead website and let us know what you think in the comments.

Pretty scenery. The character animations look a little stiff in the melee area but..beta.
Haven't really followed this game myself so can't comment on much more than the visual aspects at the moment.

Eh, pretty disappointed.
Yes, I'm aware that it's beta. But the animation looks extremely stiff.
Hopefully they can polish this game really well.
The scenery looks pretty cool. Seen better but like I said, it's a beta. So I can't really judge.

I stand impressed. The animations leave much to be desired, but whatever, its beta.
I have to say, i especially love how the combat ui elements only show up while in combat, or when the weapon is being held. Thats always been one of my pet peeves.

I would not argue that animations look clunky or stiff. I do like the enviroments and scenery, that kind of thing is important to me and my style of gameplay, more an explorer then a combat fan. I would like to think getting the game mechanics and systems in place is more important for launch, animations can be upgraded later I would think... kind of how Fallen Earth handled their graphic upgrades and such.

Yeah, the animations are pretty crap, and the world looks unpopulated. Although, what worries me the most, is I've been signed up for a beta for almost 2 years now, and this is the most they have shown.

.. also... it looks like it's a targeting system, not an aiming system like I've been lead to believe for those 2 years now.

I was wondering about the targeting system as well. It doesn't look like its locked because when he's up close the target goes away when he's not facing the enemy, but when he's ranged it doesn't look like he's aiming??

I hope the "animations are crap but it's beta" crowd realizes that the number of times stuff like animations was fixed between beta and release in MMOs is pretty close to 0....

Was expecting better visuals given the amazing screenshots they've been putting out for the last couple of years.

Ostiak, or Atanas Atanasov, commented on the aiming reticle and targeting when I asked him directly about it (because it looked like tab targeting to me too).
Here's what he had to say:
"There is manual aiming, the cursor is not captured by the video software."
Also, another community member asked whether or not used a freelook type targeting reticle of there was a reticle locked to a camera like in traditional shooters. Atanasov:
"Players can choose between free aim mode and lock mode like most fps's with one key klick."

Well I'm impressed.
I'm still stoking on the fact that its going to be predominantly a player based economy. I can't wait to play off both sides of the coin; raiding cargo shipments along trade routes with one character + guild and offering protection for the same caravans with another character + guild :-)

Okay so we can conclude: Graphics and animations are subpar, the world look blander than expected, the editing is poor of the video and generally there is nothing in the video that is ground-breaking or new, in fact it looks like a dated game.
Let's hope the sandbox elements can make up for its many lackings...

@Unverfied B - Agreed. However, if you look at this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F185pPMRk20&feature=player_embedded#! is look like some changes have already been made.
I can appreciate the fact they are not over-hyping it with sensationalized video footage. MO promo video anyone? Hopefully that was more of a "this is what we have so far" instead of a "we're almost done" kinda thing. But seeing how they have already made changes to the GUI, we will just have to wait and see.
I really like the idea of this game but this leaves me uninspired.

Haven't been following this one, but I'm with everyone who says the animations don't look very good. I do like some of the scenery, the big spiky mushroom tower thing, a nice waterfall, pretty green cliffs...Combat looks boring too, a lot of just standing in one place.

Sorry but I am really unimpressed with this. I have been following Earthrise for quite a while now & after this video my interest level went from about 9/10 to around 4/10. I will reserve final judgment for when they actually get to an open beta stage but I will tell you how I feel based on the video released:
The animations are very poor, there is something extremely linear about the movements. Everything about the animations seemed very unfinished. I just don't see why they would release this video. I think they should have stuck to some of the nice screenshots that were being released 'til these animations were improved.
The worlds were very uninspiring. Nothing original and a lot of nothingness.
The UI is quite ugly and looks very simple.
The combat is possibly the worst thing in the video. The melee character looks like his elbows are pinned to his sides and that he has barely any movement. Everything about it seemed very boring and one-dimensional. Once again, I think this should have been worked on much more before releasing this video.
Also, what is with the fully armored enemy that is all of a sudden completely naked once killed? Then it just leaves a tidy box of loot? Seems very lazy.
I realize this is beta but I have watched many games in the last few years go from beta to launch and honestly not THAT much changes. However, for this game to be successful A LOT is going to have to be polished.
To be honest this video looks like a few people just happy that they were able to make 3D models move around in a world that they created. Yes, that is great and all but to compete in the gaming industry these days you are going to have to bring something to the table & as far as I can tell from this video Earthrise is far from inspiring or innovative. Even graphically it looks outdated. I really wasn't intrigued by anything shown in this video.
This looks like a poor attempt at cloning Tabula Rasa which as we all know is a game that didn't even survive and TR looked 1000x better than Earthrise does in it's current state.
I am hoping the best for this game, I really am. Like I said above I will reserve final judgment for when they get further in development but at this stage I am really unimpressed.

Is it just me or does this look like an MUCH worser Tabula Rasa? I mean from what I saw fast in the video it seems really similar just.... worser in every aspect.
There might be more things to the game I've not read up anything about it and I'll probably never do after this video.
