The fact that you ruined the visuals of your website isn't really funny. Breaking basic rules of readability and design is embarrassing. You should be ashamed.

Yeah, it is fact harder on the eyes, especially those with good visual acuity. Citing other, popular, websites that have stark white backgrounds as an example doesn't make yours any better.
Lets be like everyone else?

I don't get it. I have no problem with black text on a white background. It's how I've been reading text on the web (and office, etc.) for the past 10+ years. We have a bunch of Nancys (of the negative type) on here.

@Buzz Killington

This is serious bizness. LOL. Ever get the impression a lot of people on here probably have to use both arms to lift a gallon of milk? Easy with the nerd rage kids.

@Carefulwiththatpoptart

Eyes have nothing to do with strength, and the fact that my 24in screen is mostly white and it hurts my eyes doesn't make me a nerd at all.

no problem with black text on white background huh, yeah.... and what's wrong with black & white television sets while you're at it, right?

This web site is a drag now, put some effort into it Massively. Make this site look like somebody cares.

The new background doesn't look horrendous to me, I just liked the old color scheme better.

The websites you noted, notice how they break up the stark contrasts of white with bursts and dashes of color. Also note, their pictures are big and pleasing to the eye. A few of them have colored text that is palatable, although I would say some of them need larger fonts so we do not lose out letters in the blinding white of this new tundra.

When I was in the Arctic circle, I remember squinting vainly at an object fast approaching me, only to realize almost too late it was a Polar bear barrelling its way at me. Luckily, I was to escape unharmed, but the fact this website brings up memories of my snowblindess is an awful testament that continues to traumatize me to this very day.

I...see it yet again...the Polar Bear. My thoughts and feelings are in stark terror, as I try vainly to read what is new in SW:ToR and Hello Kitty Online, all the while seeing this charging behemoth through skinny stick lettering.

The horrors...make them go away! My eyes!!

Does this mean the trolls will stop reading Massively now that the white background is causing skin lesions? Will we get a whole new batch of trolls? Can't wait to find out!

The hell. Am I the only one that thinks the last version was an abomination and this one is much, much improved? I love the new layout.

Do you guys realize that the site is a subsection of Joystiq, which has had a similar theme for a while now. I doubt they have any real say in how the layout of theme of the site is constructed.

Probably gonna have to move to another site if this layout isn't changed. There's other MMO sites out there for sure. Even the white background isn't a big deal - its the overuse of minimalism that hurts the eyes.

Well... I just realized since you changed the site, I browse for like 5 seconds to see the titles and exit. Yeah, I must admit, All this white hurt the eyes. I'm not against change, but... When you have a big screen, too much white HURTS

Overall I think this is an improvement. I have not seen the finished product so you may be editing a few things from this point forward.

In case you are taking into consideration the feedback of your readers I would like to give my two cents:

1/ As many people have said the background is much too bright. I honestly feel my eyes starting to burn after reading articles here for the last hour. The previous colors were absolutely perfect. I think you should definitely revert back to the previous color scheme or at least make them less bright.

2/ I enjoyed how you had the "Massively Staff" listed before. I have a few writers that I really enjoy and locating them by their name was extremely easy before. I would really enjoy if you listed the names at the home page again so that I can just hit massively.com and then scan through articles by the writers that I most frequently read here. It took me quite a few clicks to locate what I was looking for when hunting for my favorite columns. However, that was just because it was my first time looking around the new site & once I located everything I admit that it wasn't that hard at all. Just saying that I enjoyed how it was before.

3/ I also think that "www.massively.com" was a great domain name & it should be reverted back to being branded as such. Having "Massively by Joystiq" as your logo is fine enough for recognition. I don't see why you have to tag on the .joystiq into the domain name? I really think that is a step backwards.

Beyond these suggestions I think that the updated look is much cleaner. The new comment & reply section is wonderful as well. I look forward to seeing how this develops & I am reserving judgment for the final product.

The force is with you Massively! Do us proud!

Like people have said before me, I have no problem with the black on white as its functional, but its just soooooo boring! I now do what a lot of other people do, skim through the headlines and move onto other more interesting sites. I realise that now Massively are more under the Joystiq umbrella and have less and less say about the look and its editorial content (goodbye independence; prepare to bend for the boss?) but it could at least try to be aesthetically different and be a bit more interesting with (wait for it) some actual colour but I guess they have been told to keep it consistent with all the Joystiq sites so they havent got a choice. Ultimately the look of the site isnt as important as the content as it is just a news site after all (it remains to be seen whether the "opinion" pieces change as a result of Joystiqs further involvement), but it is still very important for a website which people look at to actually look good.

I'm sure we will all get used to it and the protests will subside and the old site will fade into memory.

I think the reason people don't like it is that it's bright, like the sun. Something which MMO players have an aversion to.

The new color scheme has taken its toll on me. I used to visit several times a day... and now it's just once in the morning before the day gets busy.
