Now that I'm done gaping at the goliath now ruling over my living room, it's time for another edition of WRUP, which may or may not involve playing some video games on an enormous television. And speaking of things that are large enough to be used as transportation, this week's bonus question is about our favorite mounts across the various games we've all played. Click on past the break to see what the Massively crew is up to for the weekend, and leave your own weekend plans in the comments.
Beau Hindman (@Beau_Hindman): Ugh, I'm stuffed. Oh? Games! Can I answer this after I'm... zzz.
Favorite mount? I had a brown horse named Poopy in Ultima Online, and it got killed (your mount could die), and I had it forever. I literally felt sad for the little guy.
The coolest vehicle I've ever owned in EVE Online would have to be the Legion, the Amarr tech 3 Strategic Cruiser. It can be configured for a number of unique roles, and it looks absolutely incredible.
Brianna Royce (@nbrianna): Not much game time for me this weekend, but I'm shutting a few accounts down in prep for Cataclysm, yay! I'd really like to be playing Guild Wars, but I am trying to hold out until seven-hero parties are in to save myself some needless frustration.
Right when Ultima Online: The Second Age launched, a friend used a clever trick *cough* to smuggle a blue Ostard from the new lands to the old for me to ride. It's terribly primitive now, but I was hot stuff in the period after EA fixed that exploit but before EA made it possible for everyone to do. My favorite vehicle, though, is Star Wars Galaxies' XJ-2 Airspeeder. Vrooooom!
Eliot Lefebvre: There's a spectacular new patch in Final Fantasy XIV, a spectacular number of Mission Architect missions to run in City of Heroes, and as mentioned, a spectacularly large television in my living room. So I have nothing if not a surfeit of options, which means I'll probably spend the weekend reading comics.
A remarkable portion of the games I play don't have mounts in the traditional sense, but I have to give a nod to my advanced cruiser in Star Trek Online. It wasn't just a mount; it was a home.... a home bristling with precisely calibrated tetryon cannons, high-powered quantum mines, and impenetrable force fields. Also a really nice warp drive.
Greg Waller: More Warhammer Online and Fallout: New Vegas for me. The coolest mount I ever owned was my Dreadsteed back in vanilla World of Warcraft. All the work and questing I had to do to get it made it all the more special to me. I was also responsible for holding the guild's re-usable Dreadsteed components, so I spent a lot of time in Dire Maul after that.
Jef Reahard: Darkfall for me, with some Age of Conan leftovers. Coolest mount was undoubtedly SWG's YT-2400. Honorable mentions to the Jetpack and Light-Bending BARC speeder from the same title.
Jeremy Stratton (@Jeremy_Stratton): This is another busy weekend for me, so maybe only a little Runes of Magic. My new penchant for alts has me wanting to create a Druid/Mage in RoM. It seems to share common traits with Elemental Shamans in World of Warcraft, and I loved my Shaman. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
Justin Olivetti (@Sypster): With mine eyes firmly fixed on the future -- the November Update in Lord of the Rings Online and the December 3rd start of the Rift beta -- I feel like I'm dawdling in the present. That said, I have deep plans to power-level my Lore-master through the 30s and see if I can't become the supreme power in Middle-earth.
As for the coolest mount, I'd have to go with two that I had to craft: the helicopter in World of Warcraft and the cargo motorcycle in Fallen Earth. Both took a lot of time and effort to create, and both gave me immense satisfaction as I jumped in the seat, turned the ignition, and shouted "EAT MY DUST!" to no one in particular.
Karen Bryan (@JayeRnH): EverQuest II for me, as usual. I have to start making room for all the snowballs and gifts I can accumulate during Frostfell!
As for coolest mount, I'd say the camel mount from Vanguard was definitely the best. /Hugs to my guildes for saving up and buying one for me, one fine day after a crawl through Pantheon of the Ancients. That was quite a surprise!
Krystalle Voecks (@Krystalle): I'm going to be doing stuff in EVE this weekend on my two characters. I'd tell you more about what I'm doing, but you know that thing about ninjas dropping out of nearby locales and doing unpleasant things with sharp objects? Yes? That. A lot.
As for mounts, I've had a lot of great ones, but I'd have to say the one I love the most has to be the simple Minmatar Rifter. My old corp was heading into the bonus pocket in Angel Extravaganza 4, and I was tagging along in my noob frigate. Due to the relative size/speed of my ship versus the huge ships my corpmates were flying, I accidentally wound up in there first and picked up immediate aggro from the group. Rather than forcing me to warp out to break aggro, the fleet commander had me set an obnoxiously large orbit that kept me out of range since I could move much, much faster. With aggro stuck to me, and me way ahead of NPC firing range, my corpmates picked off the little ships first, then took their time tearing everything else down. My Rifter was laughingly dubbed "Milkbone" for this feat.
Patrick Mackey: I'll be honest, I have no real idea what I'm doing this weekend. Certainly there will be some turkey day/post turkey day festivities (they're starting as I write this), but after that it is a bit murky. Like Brendan, I'm going to be moving soon, so I suspect that at least some of my time this weekend will be devoted to finishing up the logistics with my new roommate. As for the coolest mount I've owned, I mostly play games with travel powers, which probably doesn't count, and my level 40 Warlock mount in WoW, way back when I played in Vanilla. Still, although my selection is pretty small, one mount does stand out from the rest. It's an absolute beast. Many people think that the other "mounts" in its tier are bad, but really, the KV is just a cut above.
Shawn Schuster (@SSchuster): This weekend I'm rediscovering Wurm Online and trying to finally finish Fable III.
As for my favorite mount, I had to think a bit on this one. I would say the one I like the most is my flying dragon mount in Free Realms. Although not very useful beyond cosmetics (thanks to an open fast-travel system), I still think Free Realms has some of the best mounts. If they ever introduce Harleys in Fallen Earth, I'll quickly change my mind.
