More or less, all Aion has going for it is the gear grind and forts. Take away the gear grind (carrot on a stick) and there's not much to play for.

There's still the carrot, it just isn't covered with rusted nails that stab your eye any time you try to get close anymore.

This is a PvP game. Am I the last person who wants to win because I'm actually better, and not because of how much time I spent grinding *NPC* mobs to make the money to buy competitive PvP gear?

Also, you could always buy the molars at the broker. The nonelite NPCs patrolling around can also drop the quest item. There wasn't ever any strict requirement to group. I've got the boots on 3 toons, and I stopped grouping at all there around #40 on the first toon.

NCSoft tries desperately to make Aion "easy", because of the massive loss of players. They had 1.2mil players in the first month in NA/EU and after 1.5 years they struggle below 100.000 players in NA/EU. Lack of content and lack of support (still no in game GMs after 1.5 years) buried this game and handing free loot will not revive it.

@(Unverified) Curious, where are you finding those stats? I'd be interested in seeing them.

@gamebynight In the NCSoft octomber financial report. They write there that they have now 2.7mil players worldwide , down from 4.5mil. In Korea and China they had a stable population of around 2.5mil players in the summer. So around 200k left for Japan, NA and EU markets.
Look also at the player count threads on AionSource and do not trust the so called Aion fanboys, just Aion CMs posting with alts. There are 2, 3 of them (CM alts) lurking on massively and aionsource.

@Georgio
Oh look Zorndorf (=Georgio) the WoW fanboy and Blizzard shareholder is spreading false information (never been stated by NC the game lost 200.000 in NA, EU, or JP just a lie made up by Zorndorf) spread between a few facts (Aion boasts with 2.7 M active subscriptions, not less than he claimed on his tons of sockpuppets and alts on every popular public forum the last months) that have no realtion to the lies he puts them in the same sentencr with to pretend he has any basis.

@gamebynight
He made them up. Just like in the last 5000 routine post spread between his alts trashtalking about Aion or NCSoft.
The only thing hes doing above making them up from nothing but shere hate on the game, is throwing them between a few other figures (that are actually true) and pretend the sources for the facts are making his lies and made up claims he just threw inbetween, true either.
Or he is refering to sources "somewhere else" and pretends they prove his point, even when they usually never do.
Sometimes he also pretends to play Aion (he never did and has barrely any clue of it) and claims he can just verify it.

Personally I'm glad they've been making it quicker and easier, because even now after these updates it is by no means quick or easy. It was flat out ridiculous at launch, and thats what chased most players away to begin with, and then it took them ages just to get 1 real update out the door so everyone else got bored. They had a very forgiving community for the first 6 months so it's not like they didn't have the time. They really should not have launched before their first big update was close to being ready to launch, and they should have listened to the beta testers who all pretty much agreed it was too grindy and there wasn't enough content to keep people interested in the long term. They made all the classic mistakes and even created a couple of their own. I was one of the players really rooting for this game, and I think they could of had something HUGE on their hands if they had gone about it the right way.

This article brings up good points, but hopefully NCSoft will find a middle point and not make this game easier than it already is.

and most people really want to go on easy street

if a million dollars landed on your feet you wont say "nah, i wont take it, ill go make my own million"

why do you think those lotteries and casinos make so much money? because most people are lazy.

i have stopped playing aion 2 months after i got my miragents and also got my boyfriend's miragent. We looked at things and all was easy or just not worth the time spent. I mean, why do the new long instances when you're not gonna break your set ? maybe some people want the full stormwing set, but for me that was not an achievement anymore. The point is, after seeing 2.1, i'm sure i'm not returning.

This game is still based on top end gear being PVP gear. That is still not easy to obtain so getting PVE gear more easy was something they had to do in order to attract people back. Aion failed with their expansion pack by not making the new gear actually worth getting over fenris/miragent. You gotta make big differences in the gear for Aion to get people to want to play. I was once decent at pvp in Aion with 40's gold gear and now with the 55 gold+ gear I am getting stomped on with quite ease. I'm all for the changes NCsoft made to their dying ship by bringing back more casual people to the game. The game just has to last long enough for Blade and Soul and/or Guild Wars 2 (they publish).

Guess that's the difference between casuals and hardcores. We play games to have fun, you play them to get a false sense of achievement, because at the end of the day, your gaming session doesn't mean squat in the real world. We are paying for entertainment, you are paying for grinds and frustration. I choose my play style not just because it fits my personality, but also because I am not a masochist.

I'm actually really upset about the recent changes

the whole reason I left LOTRO was because they made the game so easy it was absolutely ridiculous...now Aion still has many a dumbing-down patch to go before it becomes the walk-in-the-park that LOTRO is but still, it's the wrong direction

I loved the economy the past few months...when you crafted a good item, or found one in-game, you got excited because you knew it was fun time to post it on the broker, and it almost always sold, no matter what it was...now, this past weekend, just through some casual playing I got literally dozens of blue items, my broker is at 15/15 and my bags are full of stuff that I used to never even think about vendoring or dismantling...now, it's been less than a week, and items are already starting to be worth squat.

They upped the droprates WAYYYYY too high, the game's economy will likely be completely without hope within a month max

I just wish games would come out and stay true to the designs they were implemented from, and be less cash-greedy, but I realize that's never going to happen :(

"at what point does making the game a bit easier go too far?"

Is it just me, or is anyone else having a serious case of deja vu?

"While the game certainly shouldn't be a job in itself, do we really need to cater to the instant-gratification crowd by dumbing it down completely?"

You're in luck! I believe Blizzard may have the answer you're looking for.

"I firmly believe in the old adage "you appreciate what you have to work for," and I think that spoon-feeding players is a bad idea that is going to come back and nip NCsoft in the... ankle."

Sort of like it bit Blizzard with World of Warcraft somewhere to the tune of 11 million or so players. I'm suddenly envisioning the heads at NCSoft running about doing their best Bella impersonation, "Change me. Bite me. Bite me now!"

I really hate to burst your bubble on this one, but we are living in a world full of zombies. Only, unlike in the movies, they play certain MMOs and try to pass themselves off as normal functioning humans rather than eating people's brains.

I got rewarded a "Trine Cleave" by saying "Having gold drop like rain is equally game breaking as having it not drop at all" 2 months ago when the Korean drop rate test were made public.

I did not know that comment is even breaking Aion's forum rules as a player who wish to have the game lived longer at the time. Sensing they're not going to even care about what existing players want and just want to attract new subscribers till supply of those type players ran out before they shut the game down due to "unforeseeable" population drops. I have already unsubbed since then.

Harsh judgement from the usual WoW fanboy that still never has touched Aion before and doesnt even have a remote insight of Aions current population nor current ingame GM activites. Dont bother to refer to sources "somewhere else" that dont prove your point as usual or making up new falacious calculations to pretend you could prove your point.

But its sad to see NCSoft lower their standarts and fall back to such cheap sort of game design or more gamedegeneration, we have mostly been used to face from backwards massmarketing publisher like Blizzard who built their whole game on this principle as a pillar, next to (false)hype, (misleading)ads and ofcourse dumbed down content. All just to increase populations again and tap on the shallow gamer that prefer WoWs gratificationtreadmills over gameplay.
