World of Warcraft's third major expansion, Cataclysm, is set to launch in just two weeks. Like previous expansions, Cataclysm will be adding a few extra levels to the cap and a series of pieces of new endgame dungeons and raids for players to explore. Unlike previous expansions, however, Cataclysm contains a revamp of the entire old game world. Blizzard's design standards have changed drastically since WoW was first launched back in 2004, and Cataclysm represents an opportunity to bring all the game's original content up to those new design standards. This monumental revamp of the low-level game experience is sure to bring many players back who have gotten bored of the early levels. In lore terms, the world is about to be rended apart by The Shattering, releasing the ancient and deadly Warcraft dragon Deathwing.
Our friends over at World of Warcraft Insider have been looking forward to the shattering patch. With only two weeks to go until Cataclysm's launch, they suspect that the world will be forever changed during tomorrow's extended server downtime. Important changes that will be going live when the shattering occurs include a reduction in the experience requirements from level 71 to 80 and the removal of the entire Zul'Gurub zone. The anticipated new race and class combinations will also be going into effect, but players will have to wait for the official Cataclysm launch to try out the new Goblin and Worgen races. Skip over to WoW Insider for the full story and more Cataclysm launch coverage.

Just a quick question, does Cataclysm include any lvl 61-80 content ?

Blizzard said Northrend leveling would require 20% less XP than it currently does. I guess that sort of counts?
There was talk during Blizzcon about updating Outland and Northrend to reflect what is happening to the world in Cataclysm, but that's a ways off.

It's a removal of Zul'Gurub in the sense that it's no longer a raid zone. The area still exists, but it's been changed to be part of questing of the Stranglethorn area I believe. A lot of people are scrambling to run it one last time to get a chance at the mount or any other loot.

Raised "design standards"
Nice flattery for dumbing down and simplifing content into a onedimensional treadmill of rewards and simpleminded task, shallow enough for the masses to enjoy.

And there I was thinking we'd manage to have a nice friendly discussion without the trouble causing trolls stepping in. Ah well...

@(Unverified) I'll probably get. Level to 85, play a bit then quit like I did the last two xpacs. lol
I mean with LotRo free to play, it seems harder and harder to justify paying 15 a month for game that's always been about gear and doing a handful of dungeons over and over and over.
Now if only WAR would go F2P so I could get my PvP fix for free.

@hami83 I'll do the same probably. At least I'll play again for 2-3 months something OK. I stopped playing WOW almost 2 years ago after 4 years of play time. The sad part is that I went through several MMO's in the last 2 years and all of them proved to be hyped unfinished products.
Probably a lot of the MMO's who had an easy time (Lotr, Aion,CoH,Warhammer etc. ) and manage to trick players with incomplete games will get heavy blows because of Cataclysm.
A lot of players like me and hami will probably dump any other MMO and retry to play WOW even if only for 2 or 3 months.

I feel ya'. However, part of me still wants to at least check it out... maybe level to 85... maybe... If I do come back, it'll be after all the initial worgs and goblins everywhere has died down and its more or less back to normal... then I may restart a toon.

Yep, I'm right there with you. I played from launch until six months before WotLK. I came back for Wrath, but I only lasted for four months or so until I got bored and quit again. And I have no interest in coming back for this expansion.
I had a good run, so I can't complain. But the things I really loved about the game don't exist anymore; it's all raiding, gear and dungeon finders. No thanks!

Well, the servers may still be down but the new Cataclysm cinematic and login screen are active. I think it's safe to say that the Shattering is indeed happening while we wait.
Most people probably don't know this but the core purpose for Cataclysm was to allow flying in Azeroth. The world was originally built as a sphere which meant that flying mounts had a bit of a problem -- if you flew parallel to the ground you would rapidly gain altitude. They built Outland and Northrend flat to fix this. So when they were brainstorming what to do with this expansion, one of the key things they wanted was to allow flying in Azeroth. That meant having to rebuild the world and so they decided that if they were going to go to that much effort anyway they might as well make it epic. Cataclysm was born.
Thus, it can truly be said that Deathwing is going to flatten Azeroth!
