I think maybe it'd be more accurate to say "subtractive retcons, where you take something away can be a massive headache, but additive retcons, where you 'reveal' details simply by adding more background usually work pretty cleanly". Or something like that. Point is, it's a clearer way of distinguishing what constitutes a bad vs. an acceptable retcon than "hard" or "soft".
