This makes me sad. FF14 looked like it had SUCH a beautiful world. It pains me to know I will *never* experience this world because of all this horrible crap I read.

Even getting xp from killing things is random? This game seems worse and worse the more I read about it.

Hence the need for a patch. Due to almost universal hatred for certain aspects of FFXIV, SE has actually decided to listen and they're actively making an effort to fix these issues. You should probably hold off further judgment until the first 2011 patch. They claim that most issues the players are having will be fixed by then. Hopefully they are right. I really want to like FFXIV.

No Experience is set i believe.

because you have 2 levels

you have a physical level dictated by your total experience gain

and then you have your current classes level, and the points for that are skill gain's which were rewarded for every action, and while they seem random there probably based on use of the attack on creature and the damage done and whatnot

Well, that's almost as bad. The random skill up crap, from weapon and magic skillups to crafting skillups were some of the worst parts about ffxi. Square needs to join us in this decade. Ffxiii was an abortion of a game and this doesn't seem much better. Meanwhile they release their good titles on handhelds and abandon their best series. If I was a shareholder, I'd be calling for blood.

EXP was never random, skill ups were. You can rank up multiple skills on one character, but you only have one physical level based on EXP. It was the exact same system as XI, except in XI each job had multiple levels and skillups were only for the weapon(the same as WoW, since youve obviously never played either FF game if you're confused by this). The system isn't foreign, and even though physical level gives all the HP/Str/Int bonuses, people care more about ranks... so theyre changing it. It's not really a big deal

What is it about this game that invites all the trolls who know nothing about it outside of reviews?

The fact this Eliot guy is still singing the praises of this game rings alarm bells, please help me call him on it. Every day a new story about how the game will get better...

What alarm bells? what are you "calling him on"? SE has been putting out these FAQ things just about every day leading up to the patch, therefore, new story everyday.

Call him on what? The fact that he's reporting on -positive- changes coming for an MMORPG...on an MMORPG news site?

"Whether or not you're satisfied with Final Fantasy XIV in its current state, both of the previews paint a brighter picture for the future."

This isn't even an opinionated stance on the upcoming patch. What exactly are you upset about?

Like it or not, there are people who play this game...and like it, or want to like it. I don't count myself among them, but that doesn't mean you can crap all over the game, its fanbase, and its reporters. Especially not when there's -good- news forthcoming.

Trying to rouse the masses against a reporter doing his job in his own column doesn't scream tact. Or increase your odds of sympathy.

The little greedy engine that is struggling; is getting around to fixing things that could have been taken care of, had done right. I don't suppose they are fixing things in preparations for their favorite platform, the console. I still won't be trusting this game (Square Enix for that matter), by the time they are finish lagging behind the old and new competition that is coming out for years to come as this game ages. Hopefully Phantasy Star Online 2 will be out for beta testing or done (properly I might add) and I will play that instead.

Actually I played ffxi for close to four years. As I said before, weapon and spell skilling were awful systems. The fact that square is maintaining those systems in Ffxiv is disturbing.

This game may bring out some trolls, but a lot of commenters are people like me who hoped that square had learned from their mistakes and were going to put out a decent game.

Your weapon determines your class, so leveling your weapon skill actually levels your class. Regular levels determine your health and stats, weapon levels determine what abilities/spells you can use for your class. Since they're changing skill point games to be less random they should work more like their intended "other kind of experience" function.

I'm not all that into FF14 myself nowadays but it kind of sounds like you're hearing terms that sound vaguely similar to terms from FF11 and assuming everything about them is identical.

The fact that they even thought the system that they have now was OK to charge money for....

Congrats on getting the game up to 2001 standards, SE. Now if we could work on getting it up to 2011 standards that would be great.

I'd just like to point out that SE has said absolutely nothing about the randomness of the skill point gains. The update notes said that skill point gains would be increased, that is all.

Almost everyone I know hates random skill point gains, and wants them changed to be reliable - but wanting something does not make it so.

It's good that they had a thorough beta to work out all the balance issues and specific mechanics that wouldn't work in production.

Oh wait, my bad, nm.

( Fundamental changes like this, occurring after launch, screams incompetence from the bottom to the top of any organization that would push such unfinished drivel out the door. )
