WAR plain and simple, I don't know how EA Mythic keeps people playing their PVP centric game with NO and I mean NO class balancing but I guess their right when they say there's a sucker born every second.

Pffft, the game is more balanced then WoW will ever be, aside from Guild Wars I don't know many MMOs that have PvP/RvR as fun as WAR.
I wouldn't be surprised if it went F2P in some form though.

Games I'm surprised are running are the ridiculously old like Everquest I.

I agree with WAR too, not because it was a giant step backwards from DAoC, but because of how expensive it was to develop and how fast they had to merge all those servers from the mass exodus.

Any class imbalance in WAR can't hold a candle to Mythic's other MMO Dark Age of Camelot, which is still ambling along.

If anything, Mythic seemed determined to make the imbalance in Dark Age of Camelot worse. When the game was released, they had too many classes with no clear purpose. Team leads, who were supposed to represent their character class and give feedback to Mythic, were a joke. Then we have utterly broken classes like Bainshees and Warlocks. Or how the introduction of realm abilities and master abilities screwed things up so much, it became impossible to balance classes.

I believe Mythic intended to fix many of their mistakes as they made Warhammer. The role/mechanic mirror system was a way to balance the classes without the joke of trying to balance sorcerors against bards, or healers against clerics/sorcerors.

Wow, how predictable, the first comment is about WAR. I love all these whiners crying about how every MMO isn't as balanced as WoW to the point where the fun is completely taken out of it. "Everything has to be completely fair and everyone has to hold hands and skip through the rainbow". Is that how everyone wants MMOs to be? I certainly don't. I'd say if you don't like it, go play WoW but I'm sure you already do. Just because you suck and got pwned by one too many sov geared bright wizards doesn't mean the entire game should be shut down. The game has a strong following. Sure, it may not have the biggest fanbase, but they are loyal, and Mythic is about to get a big chunk of money today when 90% of WAR players buy the new packs, so that answers your question on how the game keeps afloat.

Yes, I agree, the development costs were stupid for a game like that but that doesn't mean it can't survive. Not every game needs to have the numbers WoW has to survive, and not every game has to be as perfectly balanced as WoW. In real war, not everything is balanced. You can't destroy a tank with a solitary machine gun, and if you try to, whoops you're dead and shit out of luck. But somehow THAT'S okay and fair, but a video game isn't? Who gives a shit if it's balanced or not?

The one thing I've noticed most about people who complain about WAR is that they don't know how to pick their fights. Yes, the game is unbalanced, especially 1v1, and it was always intended to be that way, they said it from the start, so why are people always so surprised they can't kill every other class 1 on 1? Or I see a level 33 marauder charge against a rr80 BW and die in 2 seconds then whine. I mean, really? You're an idiot for doing that in the first place. WAR does not reward courage, you get no hidden "bonus points" for charging into the fray when you are surely going to lose. No one will look up to you and honor your name because you suicided against someone way higher than you. You're just stupid, plain and simple, and it sounds to me like this was not an aspect of the game you came to realize, and that's YOUR fault, not the game's.

I played WAR for a while and it was a lot of fun. I played a healing ArchMage and had the most fun of any PvP I have ever experienced. In fact, I may need to re-sub after I finish my Master's coursework this fall.

The only reason I left was that I could not slog through Tier 3. I made it most of the way through, but I got very lonely. There generally were not enough people to group with and being a healer in the PvE environment was a pain. Though when a good T3 scenario would pop, it would be a blast.

I would dare say that WAR is a good game. It is not designed around a 1v1 balance as has been said. Instead it appears to be balanced around small group battles. A group of 4 Good vs. 4 Evil, if composed of a good mix of classes, can last quite a while. As an Archmage if I was healing pretty intensely and all of a sudden found myself under attack, I could nuke a low-armor DPS class down pretty hard thanks to the class mechanics. However, pit me against a tank and I would be hard-pressed to make it out alive.

The balances in WAR are different than those of other games I have found. Give it a shot and actually learn the game before knocking it.

Guild wars. That game was just boring and the pvp was like hitting each other with nerf bats. Plus it was to much like wow.

"Plus it was to much like wow."

It is? Huh?

I'm totally on board the "Guild Wars is kinda boring" train, but I don't know how you can call it similar to WoW. Not even sure the angle here... the combat is totally dissimilar, there's nowhere near the focus on gear, the setting is vastly different, etc. Honestly, off the top of my head, I'm having trouble thinking of another fantasy MMO that is less similar to WoW.

WAR is still pretty decent if you are at the base of the game
I find the fact Vanguard is still running to be absolutely shocking
The game was a horrible mess
Another one I find AMAZING that's still running is Mortal Online with all the crap that's happened and how horrible the devs are.

It's coming along quite nicely now. Apparently they've fixed the stability issues, having found the causes of it tucked away somewhere, and have been throwing in weekly updates.

I think they're concentrating more on putting in additional content, now.

To hear that Vanguard is coming along nicely is refreshing. Hopefully it's true, did they get rid of Brad Mquaid(?) man what a toolbox. I'll forever remember Mquaid because of his handling of the whole sleeper mess on Sullon Zek(?)...

I second vanguard. I have tried going back to vanguard 5 times since its launch and each time its more barren than the last even though you CONSTANTLY read that the population is going up on different MMO sites/forums.

The community likes to claim vanguard is growing but they are all in denial. That game is dying a horrible slow death. EQ has a larger population than Vanguard does and people have been calling EQ a dead game for years now...

I'm shocked that Ultima Online and EverQuest I are still going after all these years (13 and 11, respectively).

That's because both games are pure profit at this point and made their money back along time ago. As long as enough people sub where the bills and skeleton crews get paid, I don't see why they would close either.
