The starship Enterprise has appeared in a number of iterations in both real life and through Star Trek's series and films. Next month, Cryptic is excited to launch the newest edition of the Federation's flagship, which will be designed by... you! Or someone else who plays Star Trek Online. Either way.
The design contest will kick off on December 9th, on which date Cryptic will make design tools available to the public. The winner will get the immense satisfaction of seeing his Enterprise model warp into STO and will also receive an Alienware laptop, a lifetime subscription to the game, the Collector's Edition of STO, and a 3-D model of their creation for keeps. There will also be a number of other prizes for runners-up, including lifetime subs, another laptop, and posters.
We're looking forward to seeing what the Star Trek Online community can whip up, and if the first place design really is deserving of the Enterprise namesake! Check out the contest page for more details.

seems like a cool promo, but i think the failure lies in the timing. This should not have competed with wow's cat, but should have come a month later when those ppl are wondering should i resub....BAM hit them with a cool promo then, now it will just sputter (imo) :)

I'm surprised that are are 25 prize slots.
Must resist urge to start drawing orthographic projections immediately.

Well you have to think to submit you have to basically sign a release for them to use your work with the only compensation being the prize. So they are getting a lot of work for potential new ships done for practically nothing.
And if obsessive communities have taught me anything, its that they have no qualms about doing extremely detailed work for the sake of doing it.

Yea, I'm going to go ahead and say it. You would think that a company that wants to go head-to-head with CCP in the space-based MMO scene, endeavoring to offer a different and alternative experience for those who like sci-fi, should probably try a little harder not to blatantly rip off the other companies marketing schemes, guys.

Why design just another item for the cash shop?

@thain What a horribly cynical attitude that precludes anyone from doing anything artistic and fun in a game they enjoy.
Anyway, if Suricata doesn't win this outright, I'll eat my hat.

But he does bring up a good point. One of STO's complaints at launch was that the Cryptic designed ships (not the existing ships from lore) were pretty horrible designs and many felt they really didn't fit Star Trek. Now this contest is going to have dozens of submissions of ship designs made from other artists. Now I have no problem with this at all, it's a contest, it's all in fun.
BUT...if the remaining few players start wanting those runner up models in the game available to them, then Cryptic goes and starts selling these same ships on their bottom feeding C-Store, then those artists should definitely get a piece of any sales made off their artistic work.
I don't really think this would be an issue this time, because commercial artistic/creative laws pretty much cover these things. But given Cryptic's reputation and recent history, I wouldn't blame someone for being a bit worried or skeptical that they might try to make money off someone's non-commercial submitted creation if they could get away with it.

Well I certainly can't disagree that the ship designs were horrible! But, I think it's important that we don't lose sight of the fact that however bad Cryptic might be in the eyes of the public, this idea of monetising other peoples' work is criminal, and that's something they would never do.
As thain also said, there would have to be small print that gave CBS/Cryptic the right to do what they want with the winning designs, so really this is a non-issue in the first place, that stems from everyone's desire to add $ into every equation going.
In fact, when viewed like that, it's the players/commentators here who are guilty of doing what they're accusing Cryptic of maybe wanting to do - monetising something designed for fun and pride.
(Whatever happened to pride anyway? Why does everything have to have $$$ attached to it? If I won a contest like this I'd be thrilled to have thousands of people flying around in my ship!).

"We need a new ship to sell to our precious customers and make more money. How about a new Enterprise? The Sovereign-class is kinda old."
"Yeah... but we lack the design talent needed to do all the work. Michael Okuda won't talk to us anymore."
"Got an idea. Let's create a contest and let the players design this new ship!"
"Brilliant! Not only our costumers will do all the design work but if it fail... we can blame it on them!"
