Gonna take a strong company to outlast this insane glut of F2P titles.

"Aggregate portfolio online game portfolio metrics continue to disappoint and we're not confident new game releases will stabilize a decidedly negative performance trend,"
wow, thats a mouthful. in other words saying something along the lines of "The bad market trending might not help PWE level out from this loss." which is kinda easier to the eyes than that mumbo jumbo.

Now to my comment:
PWE has kinda spread itself thin recently, with BotI going Open and FI in Beta. Plus PWI is recieving a new expansion i'd say they are spending money and time on making more from less. Good luck PWE, as the forthcoming F2P games might bring something to the table (like FFXIV being reported as soon to F2P).

"like FFXIV being reported as soon to F2P"

Soon? FFXIV will not go f2p. SE developers can't even program a fully working game given the time FFXIV was in development. How do you expect them to pull of a total re-haul of the game.

I don't think SE knows anything about f2p? It would take them five years to make the switch. Even if they wanted to, time/money wise, It's not feasible at all.

Did you not see my '?' after "I don't think SE knows anything about f2p?"

Also, I could be wrong because I looked this information up on wikipedia, but didn't Fenix/Multiterm/Square develop the game but it did so poorly that Square killed it and it wasn't till Gamespot picked it up that it went f2p? So if it wasn't for Gamespot the game wouldn't of had any success and would no longer exist. I still stand by what I said.

"yeah, figured your rage for SE's failure fueled this response. please read my personal reply before going all GeekRage on my comment :D"

It's not rage... it's common sense. Too lend credence and include such a rumor in your post, is just silly :D

@Fritz

Fantasy Earth Zero was developed by SE but was a pay-to-play game. It ended up being such a total failure that they dropped it completely. Gamepot later picked the game up and retooled it into a f2p.

Cic's comment is absolutely valid. SE knows nothing about f2p gaming.

And I was lead to believe everything was fine and dandy in f2p land...

"saw its third quarter profits fall 28.8 percent to $31.9 million and also experienced a stock price dip of 16.2 percent."

Seems quite obscene. I wasn't expecting this at all, especially from PWE.

I'm no economist or business expert, but it's always seemed pretty obvious to me that PWI pumping out copy/pasted MMO after reskinned MMO is a terrible idea.

A few of their games are essentially the same thing with very slightly different target audiences. It makes no sense to put up the operation costs to offer essentially the same product.

This comes as no surprise. I mean, what did they THINK would happen? Adding more games creates more players? No, it's just spreads them out at greater cost to PWI.

MMO companies are disasters. They should hire me.

Yeah, but I didn't really think that mattered to the asian market. :/

It would matter to anyone, but there's only so much you can do when your choices are limited. F2P does very well over there for a number of reasons, but until lately the model was shorthand for fly-by-night cheapo grinders. It's only because people like microtransactions that everyone and their brother has started exploring F2P, and so actual innovation is starting to rear its head because these companies have money to throw at doing it right and want to make solid games. Thus, there are more games in the market and you're more likely to be able to choose something that really suits you instead of just Generic Fantasy Game With Gorgeous People A/B/C/D.

This is what happens when their are hundreds of F2P games and a limited amount of gamers willing to play their bad games.

One of the interesting failures of BotI was that the downloader also had a nasty little trojan on it called something like TrojanWoW. Damn thing stole my account, along with other people that played BotI. So yeah, I agree with Carson.

Are we really suppose to feel sorry for a company that has only made 31.9 million in profits? Is this a joke or is this another example of capitalism rubbing it's shit in our faces?

Hold on a second... I thought F2P couldn't fail? I thought EVERYONE said it was the herald of the glorious second age of MMO gaming?

Heeeeere's another opinion:

When 1 million people say something that's false, it's still false. Just because a million people say something, that doesn't make it true.

Example: 1 Million people say Free To Play is the herald of the glorious second age of MMO gaming. Hmmm... Nope.

Guess what billing format all other successful long term ventures use? Oh right, it's monthly subscriptions. It has worked for electricity, water, any other utility, television, high speed Internet, mobile phones, telephones, banks, real estate, and insurance. It has also worked for MMO's since 1996. 14 years of profit can't be right? How about 110 years of profit? Maybe?
