Or just a start of beta date! I got a VIP beta key and am drolling in anticipation to be able to play this game for the first time. If it has half the polish the media are claiming it does, this will easily tide me over till GW2, and I'll probably stay a subscriber based on what I have read and understand.

I agree. This game looks awesome. I think it's *good* that it's traditional. I *like* the traditions of MMO games, so I'm happy to see them spruced up and redone. It's like great literature: people imagine that what they want is something totally new and innovative, but the best, most loved literature is literature that makes old stories new again. I'm totally okay with this game being similar to the best of its predecessors. The art looks amazing, it has a full orchestral score, it sounds like its got some fun mechanics, it has a nice set of classes, and it seems to have the backing it needs to be long-lived. Sounds like it'll be great!

I just hope it doesn't force me to PvP when I'd rather not.

I think you'll be all right there, Moth. If I understood correctly from the last GD hands-on, there will be open PvP, but only on PvP servers. Otherwise, PvP will be funneled into the instanced Warfronts. Granted, I didn't get to see anything on the Prestige Rank rewards (in fact, I'm assuming any will exist at all). But I'd be pretty darn surprised if PvP rewards were better than PvE drops. My guess'd be they'd be equal at best.

Great read Bree! I'm so sorry I forgot you in the press list! But this was very enjoyable!

Appreciate the LotRO references. Gave me a source of comparison. Looks interesting, though I still don't think I could get that heavily into a non-IP game (besides GW/2).

Why do I get the sense that we're going to have to turn off a bunch of eye candy to get this game to run smoothly? Those screenshots are incredibly detailed, I can't imagine any present computer being able to run the game with such high detail, with a lot of players/NPCs running around, without lagging like hell.

We played on medium-settings on typical (not high end) computers. It could manage higher settings with a little difficulty (especially shadow quality, which I turn off for these games anyway).

It was surprisingly smooth while still being detailed, so I imagine even a lower end computer can run at least at 'moderate' settings. It's still to be optimized even some more though. So far, so good.

So, how do you think it will perform with 40+ players on the screen at once; casting spells, etc?

Considering much of that is caused by lag, pretty well. Trion is trying a different server structure for this.

Great post and screenshots! This game looks like it's going to be a lot of fun. Like others, I am also glad they're not trying to reinvent the wheel (or WoW). Like the developers have said, it's intentional -- they want people to be able to transition over from whatever game they're playing.

This game is such a welcome relief over all of the other F2P and westernization crap going on in the MMO biz lately.

"These familiar features are exactly what MMO PvPers want to see: streamlined matches that borrow the best mechanics from World of Warcraft and Warhammer Online."

Have to STRONGLY disagree here though, sorry! I miss proper World PvP, so much. So, so much. I still hope Trion takes care of that itch...

I have been watching this game for several months, and I love what I see. I personally do not go for the PVP thing, but the lore supports it very well. The Guardians and Defiants have great reason to not trust each other, and I'm perfectly fine having a background like that for either PVP or PVE.

They even have released videos for both the Guardian and Defiant point of view. You can find them on youtube.com (Defiant) or on the riftgame.com website (Guardian).

I also have them both on my website, www.lordrcane.com and a quick writeup of the differences between their philosophies.

This game can't come soon enough... I never wanted revolutionary in my MMO, I prefer the traditional take it is giving. After all the releases since eq2/wow everyone is always trying to do something different and new ( i see the point) but the fact is I think alot of players don't really need or want "new" they just want what they have played in the past done better. Trion seems to be doing this.

Heres to the 2011 sleeper mmo!

This. THIS game is finally going to be the replacement for WOW I've been looking for the last two years. I can't tell you how many times I've unsubscribed and resubscribed to WOW, frustrated that they keep dumbing it down and fostering the most acrimonious community it's ever been my displeasure to encounter. I hope to god RIFT delivers, because I can see my next five-year MMO, if it does.
