It's been five years in the making -- not to mention 18 months of beta testing -- but on November 25th, it all comes to a head. Perpetuum Online, which has been described as "EVE Online meets mechs," finally has a launch date.
Avatar Creations' project is a persistent world at war, in which players can build, pilot and destroy robots across the landscape. According to Perpetuum's manifesto, the dev team strived to make an MMO that focuses on a social experience that utilizes crafting, economy and territory control as tools to connect large amounts of players.
The download will be free, and Avatar Creations has announced that the pricing plan will be €8.95/$9.95 depending on the region. Interested players would do well to take the company up on the offer of early access, which costs the same but gives an additional week of play (early access players can start on November 18th) and four weeks of "extra extension points."
Hit the jump to see Perpetuum's launch trailer and figure out if this is the virtual world for you!

Anyone care to share their game play experience from the beta?

I played quite a bit during closed and open beta. As others have said, it does remind you of EVE but on the ground with WASD movement. There is destructible terrain which you can waste ammo on or hide behind.
I personally find the combat slow, like EVE, maybe a little faster. If you like that you'll like this, but with a little more traditional MMO kiting.
The game was remarkably stable for a beta, even in closed beta. I really only found one bug - NPCs getting 'stuck' in hills, but I didnt see this after open beta started.
I think some themepark and solo fans will find the world a bit empty, though there are quests and tutorial type things. This game is geared more for group city building and territory control.

Well, that's an interesting potential birthday present. I'm doubtful, though. It seems to have everything I liked about EVE, but like EVE you're in a giant hunk of machinery for all meaningful interactions with the gameworld.

I played the last couple weeks of open beta with my guild and we had a good time, enough that 8-10 of us will be playing at launch.
It's very EVE-like so if you like Eve with WASD movement it might be for you. It is much more fun when in a group, if you are a lone wolf you'll have a poor experience so make sure you hook up with a good corp that you can have fun with. You can still check out open beta for another week and it's free so just check it out before you have to pay.

Are there humans involved anywhere... a portrait like EVE or something. I have a hard time relating myself to a machine.

Portrait like Eve, although I think it helps that some of the more advanced mechs are more "people like" in that they walk on two legs. Still if you want sandbox play this is one of the few MMO's on the horizon that is offering it.

I might check this out. Decent filler until some of my 2011 titles find their way into my loving arms.

Checked it out BRIEFLY during my lunch break, and it looks like they're taking several pages from EVE's book...which is not damning, BTW, as EVE's a model that has yet to be immitated. And the price can't be beat, really.

no box charge with a sub I can get into, same with box charge with no sub, it's box charge + sub that I find untolerable so maybe I will try this one out after all.

am I wrong in assuming that this game is better described as "combat droids" instead of "mechs"?
mechs tend to imply 30-40 foot tall walking battleships.
combat droids makes me thing 10-20 foot tall walking tanks.
(that picture sure dosen't look like they are a pare of 40ft-ers)

Combat droid being 10-20 feet mechs would be your personal designation, not something in general use.
The word Droid was invented by George Lucas for Starwars and is based on the word Android. Both of them have the implied meaning that it's a synthetic organism or robot, ie autonomous. So if it's piloted it can't be a Droid.
The smaller version of a Mech is a Powered armor suit. There are no clear line between the two but it's fairly obvious that these are not powered armor suits.
In game stats seems to indicate sizes between 3-10 meters (10-30 feet)

I really would like to get into this but I am not sure if it would be playable connecting from Australia. EVE is very forgiving towards people with high latency but I don't know about this one.

Alas, I recall a Massively interview about Perpetuum, and it all sounded great until my hopes were dashed by the news that there's no support for PvE carebears like me. :(

I played very early in beta so it may have changed since then but it was a lot like Eve which is great if you like that sort of thing and at the time I was looking for something meaty to get into, but has quite a steep learning curve and the release date is a little to close to other MMOs I am looking forward to and dont want to spend months getting used to the game then leave to play something else :)
