In addition to the blogging and character database functionality of the Final Fantasy XIV Lodestone site, Square-Enix has been using the player site to post a series of guides for players of all skill levels, with more advanced questions on Friday and more new-player-friendly ones on Mondays. This time around, the topic of discussion is something central to every MMO -- the question of how to get from place to place. While players do not yet have access to the more traditional series methods of transit (airships and chocobos), there are still transport methods available to players, and a lot of ground to cover at that.
The guide covers the basics of aetheryte and aetherial gates, with the former linked to the latter and allowing fast transit through a given area. It also runs players through the procedure of visiting all three capital cities -- a useful method to gain access to more levequests and a greater variety of guild benefits. Players who know their way around seamlessly might not need to know how to get to Ul'dah, but anyone new to the game can benefit from the latest dispatch. And even veteran players might be enticed by the maps of Final Fantasy XIV's less-traveled regions, like the forbidding Mor Dhona.

And here I was thinking this post was going to be about Chocobo carriages being added to the game.
Man. What's wrong with me?

WoW has had zeppelins in the game since 2004 - why can't FF14 add Chocobo-related stuff?
Color me confused.

That guide is nice, but it’s making a bad situation a little less bad, not good. Read the information.
No airships. No chocobos. A boat alone takes 10 full minutes. Anima for porting places takes a long time to regenerate.
You have to experience it to believe it, but it’s like you take out all the griffons in ‘that other game’, ALL the griffons, get rid of them. And make the boats take 10 minutes. And get rid of ALL mounts. Then give everyone mage ports, BUT there’s a cooldown type thing in that a port takes points, and those points are slow to regenerate.
Yes, I repeat, I imagine running around in that other game with no griffons, no mounts, 10 minutes ship rides, and limited teleports. Sound like you’d get sick and tired of hiking for a long time to get anywhere? Yeah, that’s how it works.

Btw, why Massively did you advertise the game using pictures of transport animals when there currently are none in the game???

Man I hope this game turns around, I loved FFXI. I even pre-ordered this one until I got high enough lvl in Beta to group. I'm a healer by trade and OMG is it a nightmare in this one. Hopefully before too long Squenix will pull their head out of the dirt. Ostrich syndrome is all I'm seeing from the Eastern Dev. at the moment. And no fast travel to boot? Ok so I had to wait until lvl 20 to ride choco's in XI, no biggie there is a foreseeable end. But none, zilch in terms of fast travel other than Aetheryte. I want whatever their smokin.

This garbage will never be as good as FFXI.
There is no way they can make to game as good as FFXI without rebuilding almost everything in FFXIV, and the only people that would play FFXIV long term are FFXI fans and they screwed them over with this game.
Also, the people that play the good MMO's like WoW would never waist their time on this game intentionally.
From what I can tell the only people that play this are people that can fool themselves into thinking this is a good game.

I also REALLY hope they turn this game around, I want to enjoy it - but I agree with Joker. I think many of the problems with FFXIV revolve specifically around the way it is designed and that these problems cannot be fixed with small patches a couple of months in. It will take a tremendous amount of (re)investment of time, resources and most importantly, a shift in mindset & design - to turn this around. I just don't believe SE has it in them sadly.
I kept thinking it would be better after beta but live release has been more of the same. A poorly disguised and strictly limit enforced grind that is triggered by big crystals at identical camps dotted across what feels like a cookie cutter landscape (don't get me wrong, the repeatable missions are very well done - for side content, NOT for the main content of the game), limited/slow story progression, poor performance, horrid lag, rubbish interface (for a PC) and a whole bunch of borked non-intuitive mechanics left me so disappointed with this game overall.
Regarding getting around in FFXIV? I really enjoying exploring in an MMO, but aside from the similar landscape for each within each area and a few beautifully surprising vistas - there's nothing remarkable about the game world that I've seen so far that makes me want to see all of it - and I've already spent considerable time exploring.
I'm quite happy to go to different cities to trade in daily leves for a better reward and I like the incentive there. What I don't enjoy is that to do that it currently costs 6 anima, a ridiculous amount of time running between cities or having to find/rely on other people to teleport you. Chocobos and Airships? They sound great - but all I've come across is only one airship platform in Limsa Lominsa and unhelpful NPC's standing next to a single Chocobo.
I unsubscribed before the (extended) trial period expired because in its current state - I refuse to pay for this game and reward SE for what I feel is a poorly designed and executed product. Invest in your game SE, listen to your customers, fix more than just the 'superficial' issues - I promise to return then.
