Soooo, how does it work? You're on board the Galactica, your quest giver gives you a quest to frack character B. You then later get another quest to frack Cylon D. Then down the road, as you level, you find that even though you initially created a human character, somehow you find out you're a Cylon?

Does anyone else watch Hawaii 5-0 and think of it as a prequel to BSG?

"The game will be browser-based, created using the Unity engine."

Err...

could someone explain what this means to a non-technical person? Also if possible, could you list a few examples of 'browser based MMOs" or games that are already out so I can understand what they look/play like on Youtube?

Thank you very much techies^^

just kidding. I hope it's good.

Browsers have/are getting access to the graphics card and services like OnLive and Gaikai are streaming Assassin's Creed II to giant iPhones, so there's really no technical reason that a high quality game can't be pumped in.

Browser plugins are just apps that allow your browser to render data types other than html, so it might be helpful to think of your browser just initiating the game like the Steam client does.

WoW intro'd the TryWoW streaming client in 2008 I think - no reason at all that a high quality game can't be browser based in 2010. Unlike OnLive's streaming video setup, Battlestar Galactica Online will most likely follow the WoW model of asset download prioritization with local processing, so control lag shouldn't be as much of an issue.

A while back I heard the Syfy was working on an MMO/ TV show tie-in - not sure if this is it though. I always thought Caprica was tailor made for for MMO integration. Players would exist in V-World and New Cap City as Dead Walkers, only hearing about the real world of Caprica via live people that can log in or out.

Anyway, I love the IP so I hope they do a good job. Not crazy about the 'F2P', but how else would you charge for it? They need to overcome the stigma of the browser, so it's not like they can ask people $15/mo for it up front.

The Syfy mmo/tv thing is by Trion, the makers of the the upcoming mmo Rift: Planes of Telara. the Syfy tie-in mmo is currently un-named, being called "Syfy Action MMO" by Trion at the moment. See what there is about it here: http://www.trionworlds.com/en/games/syfy-action-mmo.php

As for a Battlestar Galactica mmo? I'm there! Definitely.

SyFy MMO/TV Show Tie-in bit the dust it was Stargate Worlds which was to be synonymous with SG:U

I have no idea what you are refering to but there is a SyFy TV show tie in to a MMO in development by Trion and it isnt SG:U :

And Bigpoints games are linked to SyFy:

Al - you're obviously right about the Trion/Sy-Fy collaboration and that's been in the works for quite some time.

What gamearon is referring to is an old, vague and non-committal statement by Stargate Worlds developers that tie-ins between the MMO and the TV series was a possibility.

But even if SGW ever launches, the Milky Way Asgard were killed off - which meant the MMO had to wind its clock back to keep them in the game - Atlantis has finished and SGU obviously doesn't lend itself well to tie-ins.

Dunno what he means about SGW being synonymous with SGU though.

There are also a few "Browser" games that just use a website to launch the game. Not sure how this one will be.

I've played around with Unity3d and you can see for yourself at unity3d.com. It's a real game engine, it does allow you to play in a browser window but the graphics and gameplay are just what you expect from a full screen game.

I do believe cartoon networks mmo is built with unity although I think they made their own networking/streaming ? http://blogs.unity3d.com/2009/01/16/fusionfall-goes-live/

Anyway, don't worry that it will suck just because it uses Unity3d, it still might suck because they failed at making a good game.. it just won't be because they used unity

I can't say I'm not excited for this; I've never seen BS:G, but a browser-based game sounds pretty cool for this genre. I haven't played a browser game since...oh...jeez...Runescape!

BSG Can't possibly succeed, it would need a whopping 12 subscriptions for a year to re-coup its astonishing development cost.

Will the MMO subject us to the same thinly disguised religious dogma that was so distasteful in the television series?
