Tweet It's a pretty wild day for fans of Champions Online. In a surprising move, executive producer Shannon Posniewski announced in his most recent State of the Game that Champions will be adopting a free-to-play model.
This announcement isn't the only shocker for fans of the superhero MMO. New heroes in CO will be able to choose an "Archetype," a class-like build that streamlines the character creation process and makes the elaborate power selection mechanics a little easier to use. Existing superheroes and new fully-customized Champions will require a paid subscription, but the majority of the game's content, including the costume editor, the zones and expansion packs will be completely free.
Cryptic has included a full list of all the various features that Silver (free accounts) and Gold (subscriber accounts) will be able to access. This is definitely a bold move by the game's producers, and only time will tell if it pans out for them. What can be sure is that it will get a lot of new users to take the plunge and try the game out.

Not sure what anyone is excited about, all F2P MMO's are bad.
If it were B2P then it would be worth playing.
WTF are the MMO companies thinking?

They're thinking, "Oh man, look how much more money we're making now that we've gone F2P! This is awesome!"

@Control
I think it's more along the lines of "Look how much money we're making, AND WE DON'T EVEN HAVE TO RELEASE ANY ADDITIONAL CONTENT FOR 11 MONTHS!!!"

They're limiting it about as much as CoX does by default. You're limited to an archetype, where you can select powers within it. Sound familiar? The paying players can make their characters from any of the powers available, mixing and matching at will, as long as they meet the prereqs.

Do you still have to purchase the box to start an account, or will it truly be free to play?

Just to reiterate.... THERE IS NO TRULY FREE!!! This is not a complaint, mind you, just reality.
What this means is that they will have multiple payment structures outside of a straight sub. So if you want to play truly for free, expect the equivalent of a long trial. However, if you throw some money their way into their "online store" or purchasing the box or something like that, whatever their payment model will be... then you will open up more and more of the game to you where you won't be hindered.
In LOTRO, for example, its purchasing bags from the store to open up carrying space, purchasing a skill to ride a mount so you're not walking everywhere, then purchasing quest packs of regions to progress through the game. You still buy it, but its no longer a subscription. Just a different method of payment.

And for the folks who paid for the lifetime sub?
Posted: Oct 26th 2010 4:39PM (Unverified) said
Like LOTRO, this is a choice between subscription and pay-as-you-go, and lifetime subscribers get access to all the subscription stuff forever. I haven't actually played Champions, but looking over the matrix - http://www.champions-online.com/f2p_matrix - it certainly looks like lifetimers won't ever need to pay a cent, the only purchaseables are "Premium Costume Packs" and "Special Devices" which I assume were on the cash shop even prior to this change?

I have been waiting for a great while for a F2P superhero MMO! And my prayers are now answered! Yes, Champions!
Imma spend my time playing RoM and Allods in the meantime, with LotRO downloading. :D

As usually your comments ad completely nothing here. No MMO can support it's self without money. I'm just glad the paying players of CO aren't getting hosed by an too generous free model.
