I think that's 3,500 in the company total across all their games. Not exclusively to FW.

Either way, I'm pretty excited.

Great read Beau. Interesting approach to server events progression content without using the item/kill grind. I will be looking into this more. I am not a huge fan of the PWI games but they do have quite the following and seem to be quality enough that perhaps this or the next title will do it for me.

Beau, publisher's name is Perfect World Entertainment. The game you refer to as Perfect World is actually Perfect World International, which is the global version of the Chinese MMO Perfect World II. :) Seriously.

I just love certain small things in this game.

- For example the main town actually FEELS like town, small streets reminding me of medieval towns, living houses that dwarf you in size, town layout(very unconventional for mmo, but very realistic for real town), horses in the stables, children running around the place and so on. Its the first time in a long long time when it actually FEELS like I am in town, instead of "that place made of squares where you get stuff from NPCs")

- Love how certain features are toyed with. For example, we all know PWE games contain autowalk. Well, in this game auto-walk is but a guideline. Sometimes it will just lead you to the place, but what to do there you will need to figure by yourself. And sometimes there will be no autowalk - through the clues on the text you will need to understand on what to do, with whom to talk and so on.

- Gotta love the quest unique-ness too. While some quests require you to kill stuff, a lot of the quests are VERY atmospheric(one of the starter quests, for example, require you to do multiple steps to summon a giant hydra/dragon and then you see it slowly rise out of the water to attack you) or thrilling(one of the quests required to jump down into seemingly bottomless abyss, only to be greeted down there by teh huge dragon 50x size of me). Other quests gave me different ways to complete them and my choices would affect the server progression itself.

- And the design. For a low/mid-end game, it sure looks awesome. And its all in the details(like different blinking effects for each race, how armors do not drastically change from let's say lvl5 to lvl10, but instead still follow similar design, how npcs and monsters are animated, etc)

- Old-School raiding. Reminds me of the old times when you and you party would go to this dark dungeon to face stuff and each and every member of your party had to useful and do its job or you are screwed.

- Monster AI, has a bit to do with the whole dungeon stuff. I was surprised at first on what your average boss can do(for example certain boss likes to change target from tank and go attack the healer first and another one once taken down to 20% hp starts doing kamikaze attacks on those party members with lowest hp...oh and another one who, if you have sufficient attack power to hurt him, increases his speed, runs away from you, summons minions to attack you close-range, while he himself stays outside of your range debuffing you). Party members will actually have to do their jobs to survive dungeons and get the loot.

- Guilds guilds guilds.... from customizable guild uniforms, skills, quests to city-simulator-like guild fortress system(for those still in the dark, the examples of guild fortress customization and building can be seen there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YujRQpQc62s )...the best part? You can use that fortress to battle other guilds

Overall while FW is certainly not your "non targeting innovative new-age next gen mmorpg", it certainly takes the best things out of the genre and adds its own twist to them, while offering a lot of VERY exciting features.

Looks like Closed Beta is open for anyone who has a PWE account already, maybe also for new accounts. Here are my 2 keys for signing up for the Beta.

No, they are letting people into closed beta in phases - I specifically got a notice letting me know that I didn't get into this round (curses!).

I've played PWI before, and got out of it because of lack of content and grindy nature at several quests. I have to admit that the game hooked me and my girlfriend for several months. Had a blast, but as you got to higher level like 70, it gets really grindy.

The cash-shop items at PWI are also game-breaking. True that a lot of those items can be said as "convenience items". But it becomes game breaking when people with spending power are spending hundreds of dollars in-game to buy Oracle books and EXP stones to gain massive amount of EXP in short time, and gaining levels. I've seen people who went from 1 to 85 just by using EXP stones and Oracles (mainly).

Yet, Forsaken World seems to be quite different. I am having a burn-out from MMOs, only sparingly playing LOTRO, DDO and now waiting for Final Fantasy XIV package to arrive. I will try Forsaken World and see how it goes. I am actually excited about server progression system though.

(P.S: I got into the beta as soon as I applied. Perhaps because I've an active account at PWI for more than two years.)

Given that PWE are hyping this as "the first MMORPG built from the ground up for the Western audience," I lol'd at the fact that all the files in the help/ folder of the install are in Chinese, and so is the window title bar when the game is running.

Ground up, my ass.
