Saying "The EVE community doesn't like [X]" is like saying, "I woke up at some point before I wrote this note."

I would say the tornado is definitely one of the best designs in the contest. It has enough similarities with the EVE universe and the minmatar race to fit in perfectly. It is like a mini Naglfar. People can cry all they like about it being an inverted myrmidon(vertical wing design), but by that logic many ships in the game should be scrapped because they all resemble the cigar shape. People also seem to like the look of myrmidon and naglfar, so why exactly would adding more vertical designs be a bad idea.

The tornado is also one of the few ships I'm really pumped up to get my hands on. There were few other good ones that got in, but most of the semifinalists on the other hand are generic spaceships, bad copies of existing ships, don't fit the design of existing races at all or are useless in their intended function. I could see them being added to other franchises or anime, but not EVE.

These designs were picked by deviant arts people, people who most likely have never played EVE online.

People who chose them purely on aesthetics.

So funny how all this little contest proves is how bad of an idea it is to involve your entire playerbase in the design process.

Incredible.

That isn't at all what this proves. What it does prove is that a game company shouldn't rely on a 3rd-party with no game knowledge judging results.

I think we can all agree, at least those of us that have played EVE, that there's such a thing as looking "EVE-ish." So, while there's lots of interesting designs on there, many of them had very little relevance to EVE. I think they should've just shoved all the designs to the EVE art dept. and let them decide, because the few that deviantART chose aren't particularly EVE-y.

Interesting that almost all the designs are pretty symmetrical, whereas the beauty of EVE is that many ship designs are not symmetrical. I looked at some of those pictures and thought "If you just cut off that wing, but left the other one, I'd say that was pretty EVE-ish." A few other things:

1) Of the designs that were themed after one of the races of EVE, many of them were Minmatar. Can't really blame them, as Minmatar are probably the most visual interesting of the races. I play Amar, though. :)

2) Everyone wants a battleship. Made me sad that there were very few frigate designs. Is that what the contest asked for?

It's already been decided, the tornado is going to win by a long shot. IF you hop on over to the eve-o forums there are several petitions to the ccp staff to adopt several of the designs, not just one. Trying to sort through the mess, that is rage and hate, the favorites are those who designed battleships that fit in with the current design of ships. Incidently there is not going to be a shortage of minmatar ships anytime soon.
