Since the launch of Lord of the Ring Online's F2P version, there's been an air of both optimism and uncertainty as to the game's future. How will Turbine handle updates from here on out? Will the epic storyline continue or go stagnant? And when oh when will we see giant flying eagle mounts?
While she doesn't handle the eagle mount issue, LotRO's Kate Paiz tackles many of these questions and more besides in her first producer's letter following the recent update. Paiz says that the team has shifted the way they're approaching updates: In an effort to get more frequent content to players, not every future update will contain an additional book of the epic storyline -- but the storyline will continue.
Paiz then laid out several upcoming features for the November update, including a new "Task" system for low-level players, another revision to the player vault and a fine-tuning of the Lore-master and Rune-keeper classes. Turbine will also be unlocking the two expansions (Mines of Moria and Siege of Mirkwood) for all players to travel through and experience the epic storyline, although the free-to-play crowd will still need to purchase the expansions to unlock quests and deeds in those zones.
The future is looking up for LotRO, so head on over to the official site to read the full producer's letter!

The Book-less release schedule concerns me a bit, but time will tell if they can stick to it. And why in the world do we need MORE content at low levels when you can zoom through 20+ in just a few hours? But any update news is good news.

You -can- zoom through in a few hours, but the goal is ultimately to make an impression on new players like myself, who have been playing for nearly 10 hours and are still only level 14.
Taking your time in this game appears to be key! Perhaps not so for vets who have done it before, but at least it'll be something new for your alts!

Birk is right. Especially with all the free TP to acquire, I've spent more time leveling up on one toon now than I have any other. The extra reward for doing so I find to be a great impetus to play. I have no idea what these "Tasks" are going to be, but the more content, the better. Of course, like DDO after it went F2P, there was a period where they had to ramp up the beginning levels to entice players to stay and pay for it instead of leaving, and its only been recently that they're going back to adding content for higher levels again. Hopefully LotRO doesn't fall into that same trap of newbie appeasement. But, by not having releases always be with a full book, they can focus on other improvements and focus solely on them. Then, focus on the books when they want to.
I say good for Turbine. My life has changed recently and having a subbed game just isn't a value for me with my gaming time at a premium. With LotRO F2P, and GW non-sub as well, I can game when I have the time, throw some bucks their way, and not have to worry about if I don't play in a week that I'm not getting my money's worth, and both are very high quality games. At this rate, I don't know if I'll ever go back to a sub.

Let us hope that the "more customisable purchase options" she speaks us includes a way for premium players to get permanent access to swift travel.

This isn't really a bad thing. If their update schedule has been retarded by the need to shackle it to an epic book, then separating the two isn't a terrible thing. And I think opening the world -- if not the quests -- to F2Pers is a fantastic idea. I think just SEEING Moria will encourage people to buy the expansion. The obvious concern is whether epic storylines will fall by the wayside. Fingers crossed it will stay in focus!

I sincerely doubt the Epic Story will fall by the way-side as it is one of the defining traits of the game, separating it from so many others out there. This just sounds like it gives them the flexibility to offer updates like class overhauls without having to tie them to content updates as well.
Considering that development in Lotr:O was hampered by trying to revive DDO I'm sure this is a way for them to say that they are still resource strapped and are having to prioritize updates. If F2P continues to be a revenue generator then that will likely improve with time. If not, then there's really nothing that could have saved the situation. I suspect the former rather than the latter will happen.

I doubt the Epic story will fall away.
I suspect the way the Epic story is released and continues from the player perspective will undergo significant changes.

Sounds like they noticed EQII Extended's considerably larger F2Playable world and are responding to that with the expansion unlocks. Which is good.

I'm sorry, did the world suddenly get more stupid or is it me?

It's just you.
Instead of not being able to see these areas, therefore not allowing them to do the epic quest line through them, they're letting F2Pers access these zones for the epic quests. They can't do regular quests or deeds there, but they'll be able to see them. Think of it like a demo of the zone.
So: it's you.
