Why do I see this asked under every Champions Online post? No. It isn't free to play, and I doubt it will be any time soon.

I like to see the neutering of their cash shop personally. So going away from a F2P model altogether is highly encouraged at this point. And like making it Allods would improve CO at this point. /sigh

"Any game that charges a monthly fee in addition to a cash shop can blow me. one or the other, not both, not ever."

So, I suppose you don't play any pay-to-play MMOGs then, since... you know... they all have cash shops now.

You want to bet on that?

Gladly. The game is miles better than it was at launch, and continues to progress. As you can see, they just today released their latest big update which includes a new instance (that players anywhere from level 11-40 can run), costume pieces, power changes, and even more.

I'm willing to bet that you don't actually play, right? Because really, even if you played before and quit, if you aren't playing currently then I don't see why I should believe what you, a person who doesn't play, is correct.

If I'm wrong and you do play, I'd love to hop online and chat with you about this even further! =)

I would also like to take that bet. There are many reasons why this isn't going to happen, 1 of them being the low amount of money required to maintain the game, as intended when the game was being built. Being sharded servers they can instantly turn on and off servers due to demand, so they will never need to maintain servers that don't have a high population (this is done in other games with server merges, which is costly for a company which CO will avoid.) Another is that they keep pumping out free action packs every two months... that doesn't sound like a company who is losing money, otherwise they would be charging for these. You will see them charging for these adventure packs before they go to the free to play model (especially since cryptic has a history of doing so with CoX and is known for double dipping). The last reason is more of a personal opinion, but frankly CO would not survive on a F2P model, mostly because they can't take away any part of the character creator or powers as thats the main draw of the game, and to only allow you to play up to X level and pay for more would only get people to create the many of thousands of alts that you can create in the game. You will see a lot of signs for this game going F2P long before they changed their game plan.

If anything these action packs coming out so frequently are proof that the game is doing better now then it was before Vibora Bay came out.

Is the threat in this game still ridiculously broken so that teamplay is just a zerg-fest of wipes?

Since you've already commented about this on a completely other post, and gotten a response, I'll just quote that response.

"So you want to play World of Warcraft, got it.

Seriously, if you're going to complain about the mechanics that make a game interesting and unique go play something else. This game is for people who want the exact opposite of what you want. Deal with it."

I know Nerd-Raging might be a part of having the name "Supernerd" but seriously I don't want a wow-clone, I do however enjoy teamplay as it's one of the advantages a MMO has over a regular RPG. Healing someone who is in the tanking build/stance and then suddenly I'm getting destroyed by the entire group he was tanking, then suddenly a group from waaaay out there aggro's for no reason, and then the pull becomes more of a "let's see if we can't zerg this down by facerolling out keyboards with whatever ability does the most damage"...all of that isn't a very fun or compelling grouping experience.

Also the whole deal with commenting "on a completely other post"...whatever that is, you didn't answer the question I asked on that "completely other post" either. I was kind'a hoping you were just a flash-in-the-pan troll that would rather rage on someone for their opinion instead of answering a question they had, so I asked here not knowing you were the resident Defender of Fail Superhero MMOs and would rush in to save the day.

Sooo Supernerd. Yeah. Doing a great job selling Champions here with your overly defensive attitude. Of course, your attitude is common among people on the forums who are still rabidly defending this slowly sinking ship, so I assume that's where you came from.

People ask if it's gone free to play because the developement is sloooooow. It seems like a game that's not expanding at a speed a pay for play game should. It still has a very linear level path and is still very, very easy. Sure, it's better than what it was at launch, but that's not difficult since the state it is in now is about where it should have been at launch. There are still broken and useless powers that should have been fixed already, crafting is still a wreck with no fix in sight and most of what's coming in the future is in the form of items on a wishlist that may or may not every come since the game is operating on a low budget with a skeleton crew. The content they seem to be intent on adding, Adventure Packs like Demonflame, are very short and not really worth resubbing for if you've already played through the (still) meager content.

Maybe if the Adventure Packs were coming out at the every other month rate that was promised by Cryptic when they were first announced, it would be worth subbing to on a month by month basis, but as it stands... they are coming out about every 5-6 months (Serpent Lantern came out in June and the next one, Multifarian Resistance, is slated for April of next year... maybe) with little work done in between. Power passes, while they've shown great promise with the updates done so far to Supernatural and Might, are also coming out at a snails pace when they are needed now.

And Jay: Yeah, the threat mechanics are still messed up. They should be fixed and players shouldn't have to "Deal with it." That's stupid. That's a stupid thing to say. It doesn't make it interesting or unique for a simple mechanic like threat to be completely broken, just annoying and frustrating. No one wants Champions to be WoW (well, some people might), but it makes sense that people want the game to work right.

You (Supernerd) are going to accuse me of being a troll or doomsayer or blah blah blah and I doubt it will change your mind, but I'll go ahead and say this anyway: I do like the game. It's very fun and the level of control you have over your advancement and character is incredible. It has very fast, enjoyable combat and looks great. The Champions setting is a great setting and it's fun seeing enemies and groups from the books. This is a game that deserves better treatment than what it's currently getting. With better funding and a bigger team, it could easily be the awesome game it deserves to be, not the lackluster shiney it is now. But it's not and it likely never will be.

Need to clear something up. Multifarian Resistance, the next adventure pack, is definitely NOT slated for an April 2011 release. That's just the annoying doomcrying of some of the more ridiculous forum members, so don't put any stock into it.

Demonflame came out late because it was delayed for quality purposes. Having played through it, and tested the Pet Pass, both delays were well worth it. I highly recommend people spend the $15 to sub for a month to give CO one more go before writing it off. It's really a much better game now than it ever was, and future updates should be able to stick closer to the initially promised "every-other-month" schedule now that Cryptic knows what makes an Adventure Pack fun.

Soo if someone like the game then that means they are a fanboy or getting payed by the company? So this is generation me or I should say give me? ignorance is contagious but anyway why to people make comments to a game they dont even like or play? I guess it feels so good to troll or bash something.

I'd like to believe that Multifarian Resistance is going to come out December or so, but I don't think that's going to happen. Not with something that's on the same level as Demonflame, anyway. It might not come out in April, but I don't think it will come out anytime soon. I would say charitably that it will probably be out in February. If they are able to prove me wrong, good for them. I just don't think they can do it.

If they can make it back to the every other month schedule, with solid QoL updates in between I will be VERY happy and more than willing to re sub. Anything could happen, I suppose.

What happened was this:

Cryptic made Serpent Lantern, which was pretty repetitive, but still alright. Demonflame seems to have been initially designed to follow the same pattern of 3 similar missions followed by one final boss fight area. When Cryptic received our feedback that Serpent Lantern was too repetitive, they basically had to rebuild Demonflame from scratch, which is why it was delayed so long. Now that Cryptic has made Demonflame, which is getting rave reviews from the community, I'm confident that they'll be able to repeat that success with a shorter turnaround time from now on.

Maybe I'm just optimistic, but I still recommend everyone give Champs another shot.

About your whole Generation Me thing there: It's not about being self-centered, it's just common sense. This is a saturated market. Why play a game that has broken mechanics, weak content and slow development when a competitor has more to offer?

As to your comment on why people complain about games they don't play... not sure what you're talking about. If that was directed at me, then I guess I should point out I've played Champions since closed beta and only recently quit because I felt it was a waste of my sub fee. If it was directed at the other guys here... you don't know if they play it/have played it or not. Unless you're psychic I guess.
